For 80 years, JBL has helped shape the way the world experiences sound. From professional recording studios and cinemas to stadiums, festivals, living rooms and personal audio, JBL’s commitment to authentic, uncompromising performance has influenced generations of listeners, creators and performers.

80 YEARS OF AUDIO INNOVATION
Founded by visionary engineer James B. Lansing in 1946, JBL’s story is one of continuous innovation. From powering legendary cultural moments such as Woodstock to becoming a trusted name in recording studios, cinemas and live events around the globe, the brand has consistently pushed the boundaries of what’s possible with sound.
Today, JBL’s influence is everywhere. Millions of people enjoy their favourite music through JBL headphones and portable speakers, while JBL Professional continues to power cinemas, venues, studios, stadiums, museums, classrooms and entertainment destinations worldwide. From the world’s biggest stages to everyday listening, JBL remains dedicated to making great sound more accessible than ever.

A Quick History Lesson
Here’s a quick history lesson. Stick with us. This one’s worth it.
Following its founding in 1946, JBL introduced the D130, a loudspeaker driver that would become a fixture in cinemas and major concert sound systems, including the Grateful Dead’s legendary Wall of Sound. By the 1950s, the C38 Baron was bringing JBL performance into the home, helping establish a new standard for hi-fi listening.
Over the decades that followed, JBL systems powered everything from intimate music clubs to iconic events such as Woodstock, while the company’s commitment to professional audio excellence also helped bring studio-quality sound closer to listeners at home.

The Year Sound Broke Free
For many years, professional sound systems were largely reserved for major venues and large productions. That changed in 1979 with the introduction of JBL’s groundbreaking Cabaret Series, a portable professional sound system that helped redefine where great sound could go.
Its creator, engineer Mark Gander, described the concept as the democratisation of sound. The idea was simple: if someone had a voice worth hearing, they should have access to professional-quality sound, regardless of venue size or budget.
Suddenly, high-performance audio wasn’t limited to the biggest stages. It could be deployed in clubs, theatres, houses of worship, community venues and events of every scale. That philosophy continues to influence JBL innovation today.

Great Sound, Everywhere You Go
JBL remains a trusted choice for audio professionals around the world. You’ll find JBL Professional systems in world-class venues, cinemas, stadiums, museums, hospitality venues, houses of worship, classrooms and entertainment destinations of every size.
At the same time, JBL has continued to bring premium audio experiences into everyday life through headphones, Bluetooth speakers, home entertainment, gaming, automotive audio and personal listening solutions.
Because after 80 years, the mission remains remarkably similar: helping more people experience the power of great sound, wherever life takes them.

For 80 years, JBL has been powering voices.
We were there for talkies when the silver screen first found its voice.
There, as music escaped tight rooms to fill fields, streets, and cities.
Powering the loud voices that shook the world, and the quiet ones that needed hearing.
We were there when studios became canvases.
When stages became symbols.
When songs turned to memories that have lasted a lifetime.
We were there at Woodstock in ’69.
We were at Live Aid when its voice reached the world.
At Electric Lady Studios when poetry became energy.
We’ve powered iconic voices from studio sessions to stadium tours.
That turned entire towns into unforgettable venues and crowds into lifelong fans. We were there…
Helping voices travel beyond our shores.
Carrying songs born close to home into the world.
Turning local stories into something universal.
And inspiring the next generation to find their voice.
Wherever new generations found their sound.
Where technology evolved. Culture transformed.
But our belief never changed…
That sound is an open stage.
Where real voices come forward.
And the joy of self-expression takes centre stage.
