What is speech intelligibility and why is it important?
A public address system should clearly communicate messages—just as an email missing half its words would be unacceptable, a poor PA system should be too. An unintelligible system fails its purpose.
If you can’t understand it, why not just turn the volume up?
Imagine if someone ran up to you in the street and shouted information to your face! Shouting doesn’t make speech clearer; it just makes it louder and uncomfortable. A well-designed PA system should deliver clarity at moderate volume.
A loud system isn’t always intelligible and an intelligible system isn’t always loud.
With digital audio, people expect high-quality sound everywhere. However, achieving this in large spaces is challenging due to complex acoustics (sound reflections). The bigger the space, the harder it is to maintain clarity.
