The Trilogy Tour recently selected a complete JBL VTX A Series arena sound reinforcement solution provided by Sound Image / Clair Global to power headline performances by Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull in arenas across North America.
In 2023, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull teamed up for the North American Trilogy Tour, with three distinct headline performances each evening. The 2023 leg of the tour kicked off on October 14 in D.C. and included stops in New York, Miami, Houston, Las Vegas and more and wrapped up December 16 in Vancouver.
The 2024 leg kicked off on January 30 in Fresno and included stops in Denver, Austin, Toronto, Nashville, Atlanta and more before wrapping up on March 10 in Tampa.
In order to deliver arena-ready mixes with balanced coverage, detailed clarity and maximum impact, Enrique Iglesias’s FOH mix engineer Brad Divens collaborated with Pitbull’s FOH mix engineer Will Madera and Ricky Martin’s FOH mix engineer Jorge Frontera to specify a complete JBL VTX tour sound reinforcement system.
“I was introduced to VTX on a previous tour with Brad and Enrique Iglesias, and for the last six or seven years VTX has been on our rider,” said Madera. “The first time I listened to it I fell in love with it. It translates my mix very well. I love the low end and the definition of the mids and highs. It has that pop rock sound that I like very much. It was a unanimous decision to go with JBL VTX on this tour, and it was definitely the right choice.”
“It’s right in your face but not aggressive. There’s no downside to the VTX system.”

“The coverage and impact from that system is incredible,” said Divens. “I like the punch, the clarity, I especially like the top end, it’s so smooth and airy and very present. The vocal quality is great coming out of it. Everything seems to sit right where you expect it to be. It’s right in your face but not aggressive. There’s no downside to the VTX system. It goes up quickly, it’s efficient and powerful. The system is at 100% and it can do anything. I’ve mixed on every single possible rig. JBL VTX is the rig I choose. I’d put it up against any other rig.”
Both Madera and Divens praised the quality of work by Bill Chase, the tour’s systems engineer, and expressed that they had total faith in the JBL VTX sound system’s ability to translate their mixes consistently night in night out in different arenas on tour.
“The system is at 100% and it can do anything. I’ve mixed on every single possible rig. JBL VTX is the rig I choose.”
“Bill Chase is our system tech, and he’s really good at making it sound the exact same every day in every different room, which is the hardest thing to do,” said Madera. “The JBL system performed consistently on this tour, which makes our jobs easier. It’s been one of my best experiences touring yet, no complaints whatsoever. It’s great to be able to hang out with incredible engineers like Jorgito and Brad. I look up to their mixes, they’re incredible at what they do. It was a great learning experience.”
“This crew we have is exceptional,” said Divens. “That’s really made it painless when it comes to the audio portion. To have consistency night after night from the audio department is the biggest thing I can ask for as a mixer. There’s not one night on this tour when I felt that something wasn’t right – it’s been perfect. Every arena is different, but you put 15,000 screaming fans in there, and it all comes together. The shows have been going great, and that’s partly because of what the PA delivers, and the crew that sets it up.”
System Features
The Trilogy Tour’s JBL VTX sound system features a total of 96 VTX A12 with a main hang of 20 boxes per side and side hangs of 16 boxes per side, and auxiliary hangs of 14 speakers. To deliver a strong and controlled bass presence, the team specified 42 VTX B28 subwoofers, with 24 subs flown with the main array, and 16 subs on the ground in front of the stage. The crew also included 12 VTX A8 speakers stacked on top of the ground subs to deliver front fill coverage.
“The JBL system performed consistently on this tour, which makes our jobs easier. It’s been one of my best experiences touring yet, no complaints whatsoever.”

JBL Venue Synthesis | Application Overview
JBL Intellivox loudspeakers utilise advanced beam-shaping technology to precisely direct sound where it’s needed—at the listener.
With their sleek, unobtrusive design, Intellivox speakers complement architectural aesthetics and suit acoustically sensitive spaces, making them ideal for cathedrals, historical sites, worship spaces and busy transportation hubs.
Designed for efficiency, JBL Intellivox minimises sound reflections outside the listening area, ensuring excellent speech intelligibility. It maintains consistent sound levels over long distances, delivering nearly the same SPL whether you’re nearby or 60 metres away.
The result is natural, clear, and direct sound—essential for high speech intelligibility and ensuring announcements are clearly understood.
What is speech intelligibility and why is it important?
A public address system should clearly communicate messages—just as an email missing half its words would be unacceptable, a poor PA system should be too. An unintelligible system fails its purpose.
If you can’t understand it, why not just turn the volume up?
Imagine if someone ran up to you in the street and shouted information to your face! Shouting doesn’t make speech clearer; it just makes it louder and uncomfortable. A well-designed PA system should deliver clarity at moderate volume.
A loud system isn’t always intelligible and an intelligible system isn’t always loud.
With digital audio, people expect high-quality sound everywhere. However, achieving this in large spaces is challenging due to complex acoustics (sound reflections). The bigger the space, the harder it is to maintain clarity.
The Intellivox range is the perfect solution to one of the most difficult problems facing modern sound system designers – designing an intelligible sound reinforcement/public address system for a large reverberant space.

AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT UPGRADES WITH JBL INTELLIVOX DIGITAL BEAM SHAPING COLUMN LOUDSPEAKERS
The Opportunity
Auckland International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in New Zealand—and it has become bigger with several expansion projects over the last decade including baggage claim areas, passenger lounge, international terminal departure processing zone and retail hub areas. The massive transformational project has more than doubled the size of the international zone.
Bartons Sound Systems are a preferred contractor for the installation of PA equipment and maintenance of public address systems at the Airport and have utilised JBL Professional Intellivox adjustable self-powered column speakers in many of the expansion projects. Intellivox delivers highly intelligible announcements to large passenger numbers in difficult acoustic spaces.
Bartons originally deployed JBL Intellivox DC280 columns during the first phase of the new baggage claim area upgrades, the DC280 proven to deliver excellent speech intelligibility with constant sound pressure level up to 35 metres. Subsequent newer Intellivox models such as the DSX280HD and DSX180 have been deployed in various phases of the expansion.

“Until the expansion project began, nearly all of the PA loudspeakers used at Auckland International Airport were ceiling speakers or old-style PA horns for exterior areas,” said Rob Waddell of Bartons Sound Systems. “Aside from the fact that we wanted to install something much better, the open-ceiling arrangement of the baggage area precluded the use of ceiling speakers. Further to this, installing a distributed system of conventional, cabinet-type loudspeakers and the cable to wire all of them up would not be cost effective.”
Additionally, before construction even started it was predicted, based on the architectural plans, that the space would be highly reverberant. A further complication: the degree of absorbency (alpha) of the horizontally mounted ceiling baffles that would be installed for reverberation control was unknown.
“Installing a distributed system of conventional, cabinet-type loudspeakers and the cable to wire all of them up would not be cost effective.”

Waddell realised that a beam shaping loudspeaker would provide the solution and determined the JBL Intellivox was the ideal choice for delivering intelligible sound at the volumes required to handle the ambient noise level of a baggage claim area. The loudspeakers also needed to overcome the high reverberation times created by the space’s open architecture, ceiling beams, walls and uncarpeted floors.
The JBL Intellivox digital beam steering enables its vertical dispersion to be precisely focused and shaped by controlling the relative phase and amplitude of its column of custom-designed drivers and optimising its volume, parametric EQ and delay using proprietary DSP techniques.
Waddell used EASE AURA acoustic modelling software to determine that only two JBL Intellivox DC280 loudspeakers would be needed to provide clear, intelligible coverage of the baggage claim area. The loudspeakers were installed vertically along the wall where the baggage belt is located. “Because it is only 5.3 inches wide, you really have to look hard to realise the speakers are even there,” Waddell noted.

“Management wanted the PA to deliver at least 0.6 minimum STIPA and JBL Intellivox easily achieves this.”
The loudspeakers had to deliver a STIPA (Speech Transmission Index Public Address) of at least 0.5 because the installation serves both as PA and as an EWIS Emergency Warning and Information System. “Management wanted the PA to deliver at least 0.6 minimum STIPA and JBL Intellivox easily achieves this,” Waddell pointed out. “The speaker’s ability to provide highly focused coverage, yet over a large distance, is key in achieving this level of power and intelligibility while overcoming such highly reverberant acoustics.”
Along with superior performance, JBL Intellivox beam shaping speakers have provided significant cost savings because they are self-powered, which eliminated the need for external amplifiers and reduced the amount and expense of cable and labour needed. In addition, the Intellivox built-in Ambient Noise Sensing System further reduced the need for external microphones and cabling that would otherwise be required.
The successful use of the original JBL DC280 has led Waddell to specify installing more JBL Intellivox beam-steerable array loudspeakers including DSX280HD and DSX180 for various stages of the remodelling and extension work. “On paper they’re a clever solution – but when you actually hear the speaker performing so brilliantly in this type of environment you really appreciate just how well-suited they are to this type of application.”

AUDIO WORKSHOP DELIVERS BETTER EXPERIENCES TO THE NZ EVENTS INDUSTRY WITH JBL VTX A SERIES LINE ARRAY
Wellington based Audio Workshop recently added JBL Professional’s versatile VTX A8 line array to its rapidly expanding hiring inventory for medium and large-scale events. The addition includes VTX B18 subwoofers and VTX M20 low profile monitors for stage use.
The Opportunity
Founded as an audio visual installation company in 2015 by former touring musician and sound engineer Matt Chapman, the company has since expanded into a full-service equipment supplier for the event industry, contributing to some high-profile events and installation projects throughout New Zealand.
The first real run of the new line array was a solemn occasion, yet the ideal opportunity to utilise all of Audio Workshop’s JBL VTX arsenal, from its VTX F-Series through to the newly acquired VTX A8. Shortly after Matt and the Audio Workshop Team had received their JBL VTX system training by JBL distributor JPRO, the production company was contracted to be the audio visual service provider for the Queen’s Memorial Service held in New Zealand’s capital city.
Audio Workshop was tasked to provide audio visual services in three areas – the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul located opposite Parliament for the State Memorial Service and live screenings in the Parliament Grounds with a main arena and overflow for the public.

The Solution
The State Memorial Service in the Cathedral was attended by dignitaries including Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Due to the sensitive acoustics of the historic church, Audio Workshop deployed their portable JBL CBT1000 high output line array column as main PA with JBL CBT100 line array columns as fills.
Members of the public were invited to gather in the grounds of Parliament where the new A8 system was put to the test for the first time. 6x JBL VTX A8 line array elements were flown on each side of the large screen with video and audio from the memorial service being broadcast to those in attendance. 4x JBL VTX B18 subwoofers for low frequency extension were included.
“We simply had to include the subs so that we could enjoy the pipe organ that can produce bass frequencies down to 20Hz,” quips Matt Chapman. “The detailed audio reproduction by the VTX A8 and B18 is remarkable!”
“For us it has been a natural progression to expand our inventory with a high-end tour grade line array from JBL Professional”

The Audio Workshop Team clearly appreciated the accuracy and fidelity of the JBL VTX A8 as well as the simplified patented rigging system which makes system set up and pack down quicker and easier.
The delay stack in the Parliament Gardens consisted of JBL VTX F35 loudspeakers being flown on the truss alongside the screen. The F35’s integrated mounting points allowed the system to be set up at the required angles while its high output three-way enclosure provided pristine audio coverage over the area.

“The VTX A Series really sounds amazing, providing smooth accurate sound reproduction and versatility. The set up of the gear was simple and fast thanks to the rigging system that works exceptionally well.”
The Impact
“We are very excited to expand our range of JBL VTX speakers to include the A8 line array, B18 subs and M20 monitors. For us it has been a natural progression to expand our inventory with a high-end tour grade line array from JBL Professional. The demand to provide audio for larger events necessitated this,” says Matt Chapman. “We were satisfied with the performance from the F35’s and the level of support by JBL distributors JPRO, and as we already had Crown iTech HD amplifiers and many JBL loudspeakers, it made financial sense to keep it in the family as these systems can work together.”
“The VTX A Series really sounds amazing, providing smooth accurate sound reproduction and versatility. The Queen’s Memorial service was our first time flying our expanded VTX A8 Line Array along with our other systems. The set up of all the gear was simple and fast thanks to the rigging system that works exceptionally well.”

HARMAN PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS KEY TO AMPLIFYING FAN EXPERIENCES AT UBS ARENA
The Opportunity
Opened in 2021, UBS Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in Long Island, New York. Home to the NHL’s New York Islanders, UBS Arena has a capacity of 19,000 and hosts basketball games, concerts, corporate events and professional wrestling broadcasts in addition to Islanders’ home games. To provide world-class audio experiences for fans and attendees of a wide range of events, the newly constructed facility required a state-of-the-art arena audio solution.
The Solution
Designed by consultant group Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, Inc. and installed by integrators Diversified—consists of over 950 JBL loudspeakers, including eight main bowl arrays of JBL VTX A12 speakers and S28 subwoofers, and a variety of PD Series, AWC Series, VRX Series, Series loudspeakers in balcony, concourse, back-of-house and delay positions. The entire system is powered by Crown I-Tech Series and DCi Series amplifiers, with network control and signal processing provided by BSS Soundweb London devices.
“We specified the A12s for a variety of reasons, it met a size mark, because scoreboards are getting bigger all the time. They’re getting taller and wider. We had a limited amount of space we had to fit into the rigging grid. The versatility of the JBL system met the requirements in terms of budget, SPL, performance and fitting into the grid.” Scott Bray, Consultant, Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, Inc.

In the bowl, we have our line arrays filled out with VTX Series speakers which is filling the arena with amazing sound for sporting events, pumping up the crowd, and delivering crisp and clear PA announcements.”
“One great thing about this system is its all in one family of products,” said Jones. “Everything talks to each other well and integrates well. We have all our JBL speakers powered by Crown amplifiers with signals driven by BSS products. They all work together really well—using the HARMAN Audio Architect system, we’re able to orchestrate all of that.”
“When good sound hits you it’s a physical experience,” said Jones. “The JBL system here can really drive that sound to our fans, and give them that experience. It’s not just loud. Loud can be painful and uncomfortable. This system delivers volume along with clarity. You can still hear it and understand it, and you can still feel it.”
“We specified the A12s for a variety of reasons,” said Scott Bray, Consultant, Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, Inc. “It met a size mark, because scoreboards are getting bigger all the time. They’re getting taller and wider. We had a limited amount of space we had to fit into the rigging grid. The versatility of the JBL system met the requirements in terms of budget, SPL, performance and fitting into the grid.”
“The ownership group wanted the sound quality to be as good as Madison Square Garden,” said Bray. “We went above and beyond that. The main array system is in stereo. We have eight clusters so we can do left-right configuration all the around the scoreboard. Delays are individually powered so that concert crews can come in and tie into those delays and have a completely time-aligned system all the way back to their main stage arrays.”
JBL EON ONE COMPACT PORTABLE BATTERY POWERED SOUND SYSTEM ENSURES RELIABLE BATTERY OPERATION AND EXCEPTIONAL COVERAGE OF SOUND AT OUTDOOR EVENT
The Opportunity
Aucklanders were among the first to view the vibrant astro-turf colours of the football Unity Pitch at Te Komititanga Square in the Commercial Bay precinct.
The colourful futsal-sized mobile pop-up pitch was commissioned for the Women’s World Cup. Vibrant and unique, it represents a patchwork of the tournament brand colours symbolising unity in diversity and the progressiveness of the game. The Unity Pitch will tour New Zealand and be used in all host cities for various fun activities and events building up to the World Cup shared by New Zealand and Australia.

The Solution
Specialist event agency Spur, who are experts at connecting fans to brands by bringing them closer to the sport, required a robust, dependable portable battery powered sound system that could run for at least 10 hours a day on battery power. After testing numerous systems, JBL EON ONE Compacts were chosen for their reliable battery powered operation and exceptional audio performance.
The Eon One Compact is a self-powered two-way loudspeaker with built-in digital mixer, audio processing, Bluetooth streaming and app control, capable of producing an impressive 112dB SPL. Importantly for the organisers, the EON ONE Compact includes a rechargeable, reliable battery with the ability to provide external power to a diversity wireless microphone system providing up to 12 hours of run time.
Event organisers required a robust portable battery powered sound system that could run for at least 10 hours a day on battery power.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the weather in New Zealand, the EON ONE Compacts were set up in weatherproof bags, just in case of the odd downpour.
With a full battery charge lasting throughout the days activities, the speakers were easily taken from their stands without the need of removing countless cables and recharged for the following day.

“After careful consideration, it became clear that JBL and the EON ONE Compact was the system of choice in terms of reliability, portability and feature set.”
The Impact
“We reached out to colleagues in the industry who immediately recommended the JBL EON ONE range of battery powered portable PA systems,” says event organiser Kristen Tingley. “After careful consideration, it became clear that JBL and the EON ONE Compact was the sound system of choice in terms of battery reliability, portability and feature set – not to mention that the audio quality was exceptional, easily covering the futsal pitch with clear audio.”
“We were able to link two loudspeakers together for greater audio coverage, with our AKG WMS470 wireless microphone system being powered by the battery on the EON ONE Compact via the USB charge port. The MC’s music and the audio quality helped to create an awesome atmosphere heard by all – we especially appreciated the music ducking feature that automatically lowered the music whenever the MC used the microphone. A very big thank you to the team at JPRO for training and helping to make the FIFA Unity Pitch the success that it was.”
Setting up a portable PA system can be a hassle. Finding the right cables, setting up speakers and making sure everything is working before entertaining or presenting becomes tricky. Trying to be heard above the crowd is challenging. Sound familiar?

JBL EON ONE MK2

EON ONE MK2 is the newest All-In-One Portable Battery Powered column array by JBL Professional. Launched in New Zealand in September 2021, this portable system has become a firm favourite, featuring the best of the previous EON ONE models and adding the latest in digital mixing, improved portability, longer battery power and audio processing technology. This makes EON ONE MK2 the most flexible, powerful and portable option in its class of powered column array to date.
Line Array Technology
Leveraging line-array technology developed for high-end, festival-level PA systems means the audience can hear a clear and focussed sound. Column array speakers carry sound farther and clearer than conventional point source or horn speakers, without the sound having to be too loud or annoying in the front. This makes the EON ONE MK2 a clear winner when the sound needs to be carried further.
Portable Battery Power
EON ONE MK2 is highly portable with a swappable, rechargeable battery that is cleverly built into the speaker column. Providing 6 hours of play time at full volume and weighing in at only 19kg for the complete system – its battery operation alone provides many advantages to anyone needing sound outdoors including school sports days, buskers and wedding celebrants. The convenience of not needing to find an electrical power outlet is extremely beneficial for rental companies, activations and any corporate AV application, saving heaps of time during setup and pack down.
When running on mains power, JBL engineers have cleverly configured the MK2 to provide an additional 4dB of sound power, increasing the output from 119dB to 123dB, which is more than adequate for most small gigs.

Connectivity
The onboard Soundcraft designed 5-channel digital mixer has 3 Mic/Line inputs (2 with optional 48v phantom power), Bluetooth 5.0 streaming, audio pass-through with volume control and speaker delay (for linking additional speakers). USB power for charging devices and powering wireless mic receivers. The mixing capabilities are enhanced with a full colour LCD screen for easy navigation and operation.
Operating the Soundcraft designed digital mixer via the onboard controls is easy and intuitive, with the inclusion of dedicated EQ controls, which you don’t often find on this kind of unit. There are three levels of access to the dbx DriveRack DSP, including beginner, intermediate or advanced, which means the MK2 can go out safely with just about anyone in dry hire, or be tweaked and tuned by a pro as necessary.
As with the EON ONE Compact, the MK2 digital mixer becomes even more powerful when using the JBL Pro Connect universal app that provides control over every function of up to ten systems.

REVERED CONCERT VENUE IN NASHVILLE GETS AN AUDIO REFRESH WITH JBL VTX A12 LINE ARRAY
To experience Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium is to experience a lifetime of musical legacy. It’s the birthplace of bluegrass, the home of country, the embodiment of the history and spirit of Music City.
You can practically feel the ghosts of the titans who have passed through these hallowed halls: Johnny Cash. Patsy Cline. Enrico Caruso. Theodore Roosevelt. Houdini. Elvis. Not to mention thousands of up-and-coming musicians hoping to walk in the footsteps of their heroes and claim their own place in the venue’s storied history.
Today, artists of every genre, from Taylor Swift to the Foo Fighters, are honoured to stand on the Ryman stage. A National Historic Landmark and multiple Pollstar Award winning venue as Theatre of the Year, the facility operates as both a performance venue and a living museum, holding more than 260 shows each year while hosting 1,500 visitors daily for guided tours.
“We look to create the most modern experience that we can while still holding on to the heritage that people expect,” says Sally Williams, senior VP of programming and artist relations at Ryman parent company Opry Entertainment Group. “We have to continue to add new technology. We have to continue to welcome new types of artists. We always try to make sure that what we’re doing right now will resonate in the same way in 100 years.”

The Ryman is revered as much for its acoustics as its heritage. The 2,300-seat auditorium, born as a revival hall in 1892, was designed to project the booming voices of evangelists, with curved, reflective walls and rows of century-old hardwood pews wrapping the low stage. But those same live qualities of the hall present significant challenges for amplified events, from managing stage volume to ensuring that mixes worked out in a reverberant, empty hall at soundcheck translate well to a full house. Compounding matters is a long, low under-balcony area prone to inconsistent coverage.
“Some people throw their hands up after soundcheck and say, ‘I don’t know. It’s going to be terrible,’ and they freak out,” says Grand Ole Opry audio services supervisor Mark Thomas. “They’re sitting at their consoles really carving inputs and changing the EQ. We usually tell them, ‘No, just stick with what you know works. When the room fills up with people, a lot of the energy will be tamed right away.’”
Sound reinforcement at the Ryman has been handled by JBL since 1994, with a system optimized for acoustic country, bluegrass and light theatre; that was replaced by a VerTec system in 2005. As the venue began booking more genres and louder acts, system headroom was pushed to the limit. “We couldn’t keep up with some of the louder stage volumes,” says Thomas. “We realized if we were going to keep trying to do those kinds of shows, it was time to update our system.”
After assessing system needs, the next step was defining priorities on and offstage. Ensuring a familiar artist experience was paramount: “We took it really seriously that we might be messing with that magic,’” says Thomas, who took extensive measurements to model what performers were used to hearing onstage. From the audience perspective, the goal was to provide a consistent experience in every seat, especially in under-balcony sections that suffered from limited sight lines and uneven coverage.
Then the team set about reviewing P.A. specifications from every artist who performed at the Ryman over the past five years. “Everybody has to use our P.A., so we wanted to be in 90 percent of the riders that people are asking for,” Thomas explains. “We chose the top three that people were asking for, and JBL was one of them.”
“With a lot of our acoustic problems here, it’s all about vocal clarity and trying to get speech intelligibility up as high as possible. I feel like JBL has found that smoothness in the high midrange. We were also really impressed with the subs.”

The Ryman team narrowed the field to three manufacturers, represented by three systems integrators, and invited them, along with 20 local live sound engineers, to participate in a full system shootout. “I always welcome shootouts because I think it’s so telling,” says Dan Heins, vice president of Nashville’s Clair Solutions, which facilitated the demos. “I wish it was done more often. We feel better with completely satisfied customers. You don’t want to buy a sound system of this magnitude and put it in and not be happy with it.”
“We ended up with three mono clusters hanging right off the downstage edge and the sub arrays just below,” Thomas explains. “We all walked the room and listened to all three of them over and over and over. That evening we had a bunch of members from the Opry house band come in. We got to feel it with a real band, a real drum kit and some vocalists.”
The shootout’s timing was serendipitous, as unbeknownst to the Ryman audio staff, integrators or participating engineers, JBL was getting ready to introduce the VTX A12, a compact, lightweight new double-12 loudspeaker aimed at mid- to large-scale touring applications and high-end installs.
“We got a phone call that said, ‘We have something new we want to show you. We couldn’t show you there in front of everybody else. We want to take a couple of you guys out to Northridge and show you the new product,’” says Thomas, who flew to Harman’s Los Angeles-area headquarters with Ryman production manager and audio supervisor Les Banks and Opry front-of-house engineer Kevin McGinty to audition the new JBL technology.
The audio team was won over by the A12’s clarity, cohesiveness and lack of coloration: “With a lot of our acoustic problems here, it’s all about vocal clarity and trying to get speech intelligibility up as high as possible,” says Thomas. “I feel like JBL has found that smoothness in that high midrange. We were also really impressed with the subs.”

“We greatly improved the under-balcony experience for clarity. It’s not so much volume; it’s coverage.”
In January 2018, teams from Harman, Clair and the Ryman took advantage of a rare break in the venue’s performance schedule to install the new system. “There was a lot of preparation with electricians coming in running conduit,” says Banks. “On that Sunday morning at 8 o’ clock, an army of people from the Clair Brothers install team and electricians came in. We had five days to get it going, and then we had a show; the first show was The Grand Ole Opry.”
The Ryman’s A12 system comprises the main P.A., subwoofers, new under-balcony P.A., front-fills and networked amplification. Stage stacks were replaced with hung arrays to clear sight lines and improve time alignment, while minimizing energy onstage.
“The under-balcony was the biggest challenge,” says Heins. “It’s a cavernous space, and it’s very steep. The geometry is unique, from what I can tell, only to the Ryman. It took several tries at it before we really developed the right solution.”
The new system takes the under-balcony from eight passive speakers with eight zones to eight micro-line arrays utilizing JBL VT4886s with time-aligned VT4883 subwoofers in an alternating left-right-left deployment. These zoned arrays have quadrupled the coverage energy for seamless sound in every seat.
“We greatly improved the under-balcony experience for clarity,” says Banks, who has mixed shows at the Ryman for nearly a quarter-century. “It’s not so much volume; it’s definitely coverage. You want everyone who bought a seat to have the same experience. That was the goal.”
The Ryman’s “new sound” is getting glowing reviews from artists, crews, staff and patrons, says Banks. And, he adds, audience compliments take on a special dimension in a town full of music professionals: “You’ve got producers, managers, agents—all critical listeners. You can’t fool them.”

TRANSMOTO ENDURO REVS UP THE RACING EXPERIENCE WITH JBL PROFESSIONAL RELIABLE, RECHARGEABLE BATTERY POWERED SOUND SYSTEMS
Be Productions, based in Northern Sydney, often find themselves working outdoors. They’re open-air cinema specialists, known for large scale projections, brand activations, and event management – all of which usually involve being out in the elements.
And you don’t get much more outdoorsy than doing a gig an hour north of Newcastle, near the historic town of Stroud, in a valley called Gunns Gully, where around 500 dirt bike enthusiasts have converged to ride the Transmoto Enduro.
The Transmoto Enduros are a calendar of eight- and 12-hour endurance races for amateur riders taking place on dedicated tracks in rural areas all over Australia. Pitched as events where you can ‘Race Your Mates’, competitors descend on the sites on Saturday to pitch their tents and prep before challenging each other on the Sunday. As a gig, it’s big, it’s loud, and comes with all the logistical challenges of being remote at the same time.

“We are no strangers to outdoor events like the Transmoto Enduros,” says Marc McAvoy, Director of Be Productions. “For production on these kinds of events, if a piece of gear can have a battery or run wirelessly, it’s a plus. That’s why we carry 60 different models of battery powered lights!”
With every event on the calendar a sell-out, covering the huge sites with audio for communications, announcements, and the race call is a challenge. “We have the audio coverage in the central operations hub sorted,” elaborates Marc. “That’s all run with cabled passive speakers, and the Enduros tour a small 25kVA generator to power it all. That area includes management, sponsor tents, a stage, and the finish line. The trickier issue we had was to get audio to the camping area 300 metres away, where they’ve decided they don’t want the constant hum of generators.”
“The charge on the battery was very reliable. We were running full whack and didn’t have to swap batteries until that evening.”

As part of their continuing research into a reliable battery powered sound system solution, Be Productions had their attention caught by the JBL EON ONE Compact. It’s a self-powered two-way, kicking out 112dB SPL, with onboard four channel mixer and processing, Bluetooth capability, app control, and an all-important rechargeable and hot swappable battery with up to 12 hours run time. Additionally, the Eon One Compact can be set to automatically lower background music levels during announcements.
“We thought the Enduros would be a great test of the JBL EON ONE Compact as a battery-powered audio solution,” relates Marc. “So, we bought six units and an extra six batteries so we could recharge and hot swap without interruption. We put in an FM transmitter at ops that broadcasts to the whole site, then ran a rechargeable FM radio receiver on three of the EON ONE Compacts at the campsite that charges off the EON’s USB port – a very handy capability, that. We then hardwire signal to the other EON ONE Compact in each pair using the analogue pass through.”

“For full range programme, the output is very impressive for a battery powered unit. I’m very happy with their coverage and I’d say the EON ONE Compact is the way forward for us in these applications.”
With the EON ONE Compacts rigged on site in weatherproof bags, the Enduro was up and running. “The charge on the battery was very reliable,” observes Marc. “The first day, we were running full whack and didn’t have to swap batteries until that evening. We had a tech looking at the on-board battery indicator every hour, and they were fine. The hot swapping was really the key to success for us, as we could do it quickly and easily without having to de-rig the units. In terms of sound, the speech intelligibility is very good, and they absolutely cut through. For full range programme, the output is very impressive for a battery powered unit. I’m very happy with their coverage, and I’d say the EON ONE Compact is the way forward for us in these applications.”
Weighing in at just 8kg and measuring 291 x 255 x 399 mm, the EON ONE Compact’s portability and flexibility will likely see it end up running in some unusual applications. Literally.
“I’ve just been designing and quoting for a running festival with a requirement for runners to be kitted out with a backpack and a speaker,” chuckles Marc. “The idea is that they look like the other competitors, but they’ll be blasting audio synced via phones, connected to the speakers via Bluetooth, with the JBL EON ONE Compact sitting in the backpack. We’ve pitched that to the event, and we just hope they don’t expect us audio techs to run the half marathon with them!”
UNOBTRUSIVE JBL CBT50 COLUMN SPEAKERS AND CONTROL 28-1 LOUDSPEAKERS PROVIDE HIGH SPEECH INTELLIGIBILITY AND CONSISTENT COVERAGE
Old St Paul’s is a historic Anglican church on Mulgrave Street, Wellington built between 1865 and 1866. Considered one of New Zealand’s greatest heritage places, it is no longer a parish church but a popular venue for weddings, funerals, concerts and services. The church is an example of Gothic Revival architecture and is now managed by Heritage New Zealand.
The church was closed between May 2019 and July 2020 for seismic strengthening work. Heritage New Zealand wanted to take the opportunity to revisit the in-house AV system while the strengthening work was taking place.
The AV system was old and unreliable and the loudspeakers did not provide the quality the customer required in terms of fidelity and coverage. AV integration company Audio Workshop was commissioned to provide a sound and video solution for the church. The objective was to provide a sound system that provided consistent coverage for background music and speech with high intelligibility. The video system needed to be easy to use and easy for the venue staff to set up.

An additional design challenge was to meet the historical architectural requirements of the space, working alongside the architect and within their vision. The design needed to consider where the AV equipment could be attached while also factoring in the look of the design in an historical space. While working on the design considerations, Audio Workshop ensured they were not compromising on functionality and quality while also working within the constraints of an overall architectural design.
Audio Workshop selected a BSS BLU-100 configurable networked signal processor for audio processing and control, using Audio Architect Motion Control on an iPad, fixed at the tech desk area in a Heckler wall plate. The iPad can run on a LAN connection powered via POE which keeps the iPad charged.
“Audio Workshop’s design for Old St Paul’s has resulted in a sound system that provides excellent audio coverage throughout the church with loudspeakers providing exceptional quality sound for speech.”

JBL CBT50 column speakers and Control 28-1 loudspeakers, custom-painted to blend in with the native timber interior, were selected due to their reliability and performance. The JBL CBT50s were specifically chosen for their appearance, audio properties and design, as at 500mm long and slim, they could be mounted between the timber work and not be noticeable. Due to JBL’s Constant Beamwidth Technology in the column-shaped speaker, the CBT-50s are able to provide high speech intelligibility and consistent coverage in challenging acoustic environments.
Due to its open-architecture platform, the BSS BLU-100 processor not only provided exceptional audio processing but was used to control the Kramer Matrix switcher for video.

To enhance the visitor experience at the BMW showroom in the iconic Nürburgring motorsports complex recently installed a suite of powerful HARMAN Professional audio visual solutions.
The Opportunity
BMW and HARMAN have enjoyed a close working relationship for almost 30 years. Harman Kardon speakers deliver immersive and high-fidelity audio on the road to millions of BMW sedan and SUV owners, making HARMAN’s technology as much a part of the BMW experience as the finely-tuned engines and German craftsmanship. For its 480-square meter showroom at the legendary Nürburgring Formula 1 motorsports complex, BMW wanted a versatile and easy-to-use audio-visual system with wireless control to ensure an unforgettable experience for every visitor. To meet these requirements, BMW and C-Line deployed a comprehensive selection of AMX, JBL Professional and Crown solutions.
“We wanted to deliver a perfect sound and video system, but we had to meet a really tight deadline,” said Thomas Langenegger, Project Manager, BMW M. “Complicating matters, we had to use the venue for different exhibits, each with their own audio-visual needs.”
BMW’s primary goal for the showroom’s system was to deliver audio and video content throughout the facility with ease and efficiency. AMX SVSI 2300 Series AVoIP encoders and decoders provide the needed processing power and user-friendliness, allowing staff to display signage, presentations, and race day video feeds at the touch of a button. AMX Modero touch panels allow users to control the displays on any of the nine video walls throughout the space and select live TV, Nürburgring TV or auxiliary inputs for presenters to showcase their own content. AMX Touch Panel Control apps give users the same level of control from wireless tablets and smartphones.
“Since the beginning of the project, we knew that we would install a reliable and rock-solid control system combined with SVSI networked AV from AMX,” said Christian Kraus, Account Manager, C-Line Mediensysteme. “AMX is our manufacturer of choice and we have done many successful installations over the years using their solutions.”
“We wanted to deliver a perfect sound and video system… using the venue for different exhibits, each with their own audio-visual needs.”

The Solution
To accommodate the showroom’s limited size, C-Line selected JBL AC28/26 two-way loudspeakers and ASB6115 subwoofers for wide coverage and detailed sound while taking up minimal space. Because the showroom also has the ability to be divided into three separate audio zones divided by acoustic curtains, C-Line deployed JBL AWC82 and Control 67 P/T loudspeakers to provide distinct, independent audio in each area when needed. Crown CDi 4|600 and CDi 2|300 networked amplifiers, featuring easy monitoring and extensive control options, allow staff to program and adjust extremely low-latency audio throughout the facility. Langenegger reported overwhelmingly positive responses to the showroom’s audio and video components from visitors thus far, recognizing HARMAN and C-Line for their expertise and collaboration.
“HARMAN and BMW have a long partnership because their equipment works and their products are excellent. It met, if not exceeded, our requirements.”

JBL INTELLIVOX AND CBT COLUMN ARRAY SYSTEMS ENHANCE SOUND QUALITY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND BUSINESS SCHOOL
The Opportunity
The University of Auckland Business School, one of the country’s premier institutions for business education, has upgraded its lecture halls with cutting-edge JBL Intellivox Beam Shaping Column Array loudspeakers, dramatically improving sound quality across its facilities. The Business School’s renowned lecture spaces, housed within the award-winning Sir Owen G Glenn Building, now boast superior acoustic performance, ensuring clear, intelligible audio for every student, even in the largest and most acoustically challenging rooms.
The Sir Owen G Glenn Building, the largest teaching space in New Zealand, houses several state-of-the-art lecture theatres that are known for their design-driven approach to enhancing both teaching and learning. However, despite their modern design, the space faced some acoustic challenges that hindered speech clarity, particularly in the large 500-seat lecture halls. To address these concerns, the University sought an audio solution that would enhance voice reproduction while overcoming the difficult acoustics of the venue.

The Solution
Systems integrator Provision and the University were tasked with finding a solution that would provide excellent coverage and speech intelligibility across the venue. The primary challenge was designing a system that would focus sound where it was needed, while minimising the impact of unwanted reflections from walls, ceilings, and other surfaces that could degrade audio quality.
In consultation with local distributor JPRO, it was decided that column array technology would be the ideal loudspeaker solution for the venue. The team selected JBL’s advanced Intellivox Beam Shaping Column Array loudspeakers, which feature innovative technology to direct sound precisely to the audience areas. This design minimises acoustic reflections and ensures consistent sound coverage from front to back throughout the space.
“Intellivox is not only a more effective solution but a cost-saver in the long run.”

Delivering Clarity Across Large Spaces
The JBL Intellivox-DSX280 HD loudspeakers were specified for the Business School’s largest lecture halls, which have a capacity of 500 students. Capable of providing constant sound pressure levels over distances up to 35 meters, the sleek Intellivox-DSX280 HD units deliver clear full-range audio from the front of the lecture theatre to the rear, ensuring that every student can hear the lecturer clearly.
“We needed a solution that would offer direct sound to the listeners while minimising reflections,” said Paul Edlin, Audio Designer and Sales Director at JPRO. “The Intellivox loudspeakers’ beamforming technology allowed us to focus sound precisely where it was needed. The results are excellent, particularly in terms of speech intelligibility.”
In addition to the large lecture halls, smaller theatres and the building’s foyer were equipped with JBL’s CBT 1000 series line array column speakers. The CBT (Constant Beamwidth Technology) range is known for its even coverage, delivering clear and consistent audio across a variety of room sizes and acoustic conditions.

“Once we heard the difference with the JBL column array speakers, we knew immediately that we had found the right solution.”
A Sound Revolution
While the upfront cost of the JBL Intellivox system may initially appear high, Edlin emphasised its long-term value. “When you factor in the complexity of installing multiple ceiling-mounted speakers, delay lines, DSP and additional labour costs, the Intellivox is not only a more effective solution but a cost-saver in the long run,” he explained. “It’s a time and budget saver, providing excellent coverage and intelligibility while reducing installation time and costs.”
The decision to switch to JBL’s column array technology was a game-changer for the University of Auckland Business School’s AV team. “We’ve come full circle with the loudspeaker technology used in these facilities,” said a spokesperson from the University’s AV team. “Initially, we relied on rows of ceiling-mounted speakers to handle the sound coverage for the 500 seats. However, we struggled with the acoustics of the space and it was difficult to achieve consistent clarity across the room.”
“Once we heard the difference with the JBL column array speakers, we knew immediately that we had found the right solution. The Intellivox and CBT loudspeakers were the perfect fit for our needs, and they saved us significant time and money in both installation and labour costs.”
