JBL Recently launched the PRX ONE Column Array and the EON ONE MK2 Battery Powered Column Array. So what are the main differences? Jason Allen from CX Magazine reviews the two powerhouse “Stick PAs”

I find myself increasingly in front of stick PAs, as more and more manufacturers get into the territory. I also ran the stick PA demo sessions at ENTECH three years running and have personally put almost all of the models in this roundup through their paces. What I have been surprised by is the history of the humble stick, its origins in a concept championed in the 1970s, and its relationship to modern immersive audio PAs.

The Long Strange Trip

The stick PA we know today had its genesis in the USA when engineer, inventor, and musician Cliff Henricksen. Cliff and another engineer called Ken Jacob started to work on the first stick PA in 1995, which would be commercially released in 2003 as the L1.

Cliff and Ken were trying to solve what they referred to as the ‘triple amplification’ problem in amplified live music performance; instruments have amps on stage, performers have foldback, and then there’s the FOH PA.

They found it all created a flat, uncontrollable mess with no spatialisation that wasn’t ideal for the musicians. They adopted an idea from The Grateful Dead’s ‘Wall of Sound’ experiment in the 70s; dedicated line arrays behind each performer, shooting over their heads, with a separate line array for each performer. No more guitar amps blaring into the first few rows, nor foldback making a sonic mess, and no FOH PA that the musos can’t hear trying to drown all of that out.

The L1 concept was tested exhaustively with musicians and sound engineers, with direct A/B comparisons run between traditional FOH PAs, switching over to four or five L1s set up behind the band. Apparently, the results were fantastic. But as is the case with many radical inventions, the public embraced the product, but not the manner in which it was intended to be used. No matter; the L1 and all of its descendants went on to become huge sellers powering solo and duo musical acts, corporate speakers, buskers, and wedding celebrants.

Which leads us to two of JBL’s newest entrants into the world of “Stick PA’s” the JBL PRX ONE and EON ONE MK2.

JBL PRX ONE

Powerful Portable PA System PRX ONE
Wall mount or Truss bracket for PRX ONE
JBL PRX ONE powered column array for install or portable uses

The JBL PRX ONE is a high-quality powered column PA. The design boffins at JBL have taken what they typically don’t like about stick PAs and addressed those issues one-by-one. Firstly, it looks professional and expensive; perfect for corporate. Secondly, the mixer and DSP are extensive and powerful. Thirdly, it’s spec’d well; capable of 130dB powered by a 2000W amp, dispersion is an extra-wide 130 x 40 degrees. The JBL Pro Connect universal app offers control over every function of up to ten systems.

The PRX ONE succeeds where many previous stick PAs fail. Having passed my test tracks with flying colours, I went to the mic test. When running speech through a humble SM58, any PA’s flaws are obvious. The PRX ONE is strong, flat, and honest.

The mid-high array sports 12 2.5-inch drivers. Meanwhile, in the sub, there’s a 12” woofer extending down to 35Hz. It’s tight, musical, and completely free of the kind of ‘one note’ resonances you can find in this part of the market.

One of the most intriguing things about the PRX ONE is the optional install bracket and adaptor. Unlike other column PAs, this means you can position the mid-high array away from the sub enclosure/mixer/amp that feeds it. Specifically, you can wall mount them with a multi-angle bracket, hide the sub out of the way, and connect the mid-high via a speakCON terminated cable. Considering that the whole package includes inputs, processing, app control, subs, and mid- highs, this puts the PRX ONE in contention for installation in everything from small entertainment venues to large meeting rooms and every application in between.

JBL PRX ONE All-In-One portable column PA

EON ONE MK2

EONONE-MK2 powerful digital mixer
EON ONE MK2 portable battery powered column array massive attack

The EON ONE MK2 is a stick PA that runs on a rechargeable battery that is ingeniously built into the speaker column, offering a six-hour run time. Highly portable at just 19kg for the whole package, the battery operation alone offers huge advantages to anyone running anything outdoors including buskers and wedding celebrants. Not having to find power will also aid every kind of corporate AV application when getting in and out fast is a must.

Operating the mixer via the onboard controls is easy and intuitive. I like the inclusion of dedicated EQ controls, which you don’t often find on this kind of unit. You get three levels of access to the DSP, including beginner, intermediate or advanced, which means the MK2 can safely go out with just about anyone in dry hire, or be tweaked and tuned by pros as necessary. The JBL Pro Connect universal app offers control over every function of up to ten systems.

In the listening test, utilising both test tracks and an SM58, the EON ONE MK2 is a solid performer. I had just tested the more expensive JBL PRX ONE, but the price difference did not equate to an equivalent reduction in quality.

The battery that runs the system is a very clever piece of engineering. I would swear, being an avid cyclist, that JBL have sourced it from an electric bike manufacturer; it’s almost identical to units I’ve seen whizz by me on the bike paths. When you’re running on mains power, you get a 4dB boost, kicking you up to 123dB peak SPL. We were listening on mains, and the power was more than adequate for most small gigs.

Horizontal dispersion is slightly wider than most, at 140 degrees. The column array is running eight 2” tweeters, while the bottom is handled by a 10” woofer that runs down 37Hz. Amp power is rated at 1500W peak.

JPRO is excited to announce the launch of the JBL EON ONE MK2 battery-powered column PA. This all-in-one sound system packs a class-leading acoustic package, 5-channel digital Soundcraft mixer with LED display, dbx DriveRack and Lexicon DSP, Bluetooth functions and universal Pro Connect App control into a lightweight, portable sound system that can be carried in one hand.

The EON ONE MK2 portable sound system is ideal for a range of users, from buskers and singer/songwriters seeking pro-grade sound without AC power, to educators, school hui’s and hospitality providers who prioritise fast setup and ease of use; to houses of worship, celebrants and rental companies who require portable solutions for indoor and outdoor applications. In short: It’s your go-to anytime, anywhere system.

This powerful, versatile system leverages JBL EON-family acoustic innovations to deliver higher output, greater clarity and deeper coverage than any PA in its class. Its geometrically-optimized, C-shaped array of eight 2-inch tweeters works in combination with a 10-inch woofer to deliver smooth, even response down to 37 Hz. This C-shaped array provides wide horizontal dispersion and deep vertical throw that ensure loud, clear sound anywhere in the room.

Driving EON ONE MK2’s innovative acoustics is a robust 1,500-watt (peak) amplifier that ensures clean, distortion-free sound at any volume level. Variable Power Performance technology automatically optimizes performance for either AC or battery power, providing 4 dB of extra headroom when connected to AC power. The EON ONE MK2 is engineered for versatility and ease of use, offering pro-grade processing with an innovative triple-tier interface, packed inside of a full-color LCD display that lets users choose beginner, intermediate or advanced control. The system features Lexicon effects like reverb, chorus and delay, in addition to a full suite of dbx DriveRack technology, including AFS (Automatic Feedback Suppression), parametric EQs, limiters, delays and SubSynth. User-configurable presets and onboard hardware EQ with three fixed knobs make it easy to dial in great sound fast.

“We designed the EON ONE MK2 to meet the needs of a huge range of users,” says Brandon Knudsen, Loudspeaker Product Manager, HARMAN Professional Solutions. “It’s ideal for anyone from buskers seeking pro-grade sound without AC power, to educators and hospitality providers who want fast setup and ease of use, to houses of worship and rental companies who need portable solutions for indoor and outdoor applications. You get all of this fidelity and functionality in a system that won’t break the bank—or your back.”

Presenters, fitness instructors and emcees will appreciate the Soundcraft Easy Ducking feature, which lowers background music volume when speech is detected. Performers can play extended sets, thanks to an easily swappable six-hour battery in the column.

The 5-channel digital mixer is packed with inputs and outputs that include three Neutrik XLR combo jacks, one Hi-Z input and a ¼-inch balanced passthrough with independent volume control and speaker delay. Two channels of true 48V phantom power are also included for support of condenser microphones.

The system can be controlled by the new JBL Pro Connect app, which provides remote access via Bluetooth 5.0 to every function and preset from a phone or tablet for up to 10 units.

The EON ONE MK2 is designed to be carried with one hand, with an ergonomic handle that’s engineered for maximum comfort. The system is encased in a durable polypropylene shell that’s rugged enough to handle even the toughest gigs. Like every JBL speaker, the EON ONE MK2 undergoes 100 hours of stress testing to ensure that it’ll perform flawlessly in real-world conditions.

JBL EONONE-MK2 Product Walk Through

JBL EONONE-MK2 Product Overview

JPRO is pleased to announce the launch of the metric version of the JBL Professional Control Contractor Lay-In Ceiling Tile Speaker – now available in NZ sizing. A retrofit safety tether for JBL Control 10, 20 and 40 Series ceiling speakers with press-in grilles was also revealed at the launch.

The LCT 81C/TM delivers high output and exceptional intelligibility for classrooms, offices, paging systems, airports, retail stores and any place where speech and music clarity are critical. This discreet, low-profile speaker features a highly efficient 200 mm (8-inch) dual-cone driver with 1-inch voice coil and high-performance transformer. Its wide 100-degree conical dispersion pattern translates to broader coverage with fewer speakers, and its high 96 dB sensitivity means loud and clear sound even at low tap settings.

Installation is quick and easy: Simply remove a standard 600mm x 600mm ceiling tile and lay the speaker in its place. With a shallow depth of just 103 mm (4.1 inches), the JBL-LCT 81C/TM can be installed where deeper loudspeakers can’t fit—even in ceiling spaces with HVAC ducts, plumbing and other obstructions. Because the speaker looks like a ceiling vent, it’s ideal for venues where the architect or visual designer doesn’t want the appearance of a ceiling speaker. Use the JBL-LCT 81C/TM on either a 70V or 100V distributed speaker line or at low impedance, for maximum versatility.

“Most in-ceiling speakers require a highly skilled installer to measure and cut precise speaker holes into ceiling tiles, which is a messy, expensive, time-consuming process,” said Rick Kamlet, HARMAN/JBL Senior Manager, Installed Loudspeakers. “The JBL-LCT 81C/TM drops right into standard metric ceiling grids, for fast, neat installation that doesn’t require cuts or modifications to the ceiling and doesn’t contaminate the client’s space. “These speakers really check all the boxes: They’re efficient and affordable, sound great, and can be installed in minutes. And now, with a metric version, anyone in the world can take advantage of their clarity and versatility.”

When it comes to installs, safety comes first. The JBL-LCT 81C/TM is UL1480 and UL2043 certified, allowing use in ceiling plenum spaces where certifications are required. Two safety seismic attachment tabs are provided for securing to a ceiling deck.

JBL Professional also introduced the JBL MTC-CSTeth1 retrofit safety tether for JBL Control 10, 20 and 40 Series ceiling speakers with press-in grilles. This durable, reliable safety tether is constructed from strong, highly flame-resistant aramid fiber cord and is virtually invisible and acoustically transparent.
The JBL-MTC-CSTeth1 is sold in packs of ten and supports JBL Control 10 Series, Control 20 Series and Control 40 Series speaker lines.

HARMAN PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS KEY TO FLEXIBLE AND RELIABLE JBL PERFORMANCE AUDIO SYSTEM

Massey University’s heritage listed Sir Geoffrey Peren Building, recently underwent a massive renovation which has brought back to life many of the building’s original features and provided seismic strengthening. The NZ Institute of Architects Heritage Award winning multipurpose venue features the Central Auditorium, a key space which has been restored to its original elegant form and now a grand function room filled with natural light and is an ideal space for events.

The University specified an audio system that would predominantly be used for speech, with occasional musical performance. The system not only had to be versatile but easy to use, meet the aesthetic requirements in keeping with the elegant building status and of come within budget.

ML Consultants were appointed to supply and install a world class sound system and worked with JPRO’s audio team to design a system that would cover all of the customer requirements.

A Soundweb BSS BLU-100 audio processor with BSS Contrio Ethernet EC-8BV wall controller was installed to control the conference events, with the wall controller also controlling the functioning of the projector. The system processor was programmed and commissioned by ProVision Technologies.

Callum from Provision says, “The BSS Soundweb range of processors offer great value for money, and high reliability. When I install BSS Audio in a venue I know it will give many years of trouble free service. This is backed up by the great service of the team at JPRO.”

AKG WMS470 cost-effective handheld and presenter diversity wireless microphone systems were supplied. The WMS470 systems provide excellent value and professional reliability, with the ability to group operating frequencies and minimise external interference. The Presenter systems come complete with a headset and lapel microphone allowing the customer an option to choose their preferred microphone type.

“The BSS Soundweb range of processors offer great value for money, and high reliability. When I install a Soundweb in a venue I know it will give many years of trouble free service.”

Two JBL CBT-70J column array speakers and CBT70-JE extension speakers were installed for FOH with JBL Control25AV speakers installed for delays and balcony speakers. As JBL CBT column arrays are designed to perform without additional audio signal processing, Crown XTi series amplifiers power the loudspeakers.

JPRO’s audio designer comments “The ease model showed less than 3dB variation of volume throughout the venue for speech. This model was backed up once installed as the sound throughout the venue is extremely consistent at every listening position. It is what I like to call a good day at the office!”

For musical performances, two JBL PRX715XLF powered subwoofers were installed for when extra Low Frequencies are required.

“The Soundcraft digital consoles are the easiest to use digital consoles on the market; this is perfect for a venue where the console could be used by multiple users with varying levels of ability”

A Soundcraft Si Impact digital mixing console was selected for its simplicity. The Si Impact offers the unique FaderGlow system for an easy-to-follow workflow. “The Soundcraft digital consoles are the easiest to use digital consoles on the market,” says JPRO. “This is perfect for a venue where the console could be used by multiple users with varying levels of ability”.

To make set up easy for the venue technician a BSSBLU-SI card was installed into the console. This provides flexibility for when a production is performed in the venue and the Si-Impact is in use, the system can be switched over to the local inputs at the console. Further expandability is achieved with a Madi Controlled MSB-16 Channel Digital Stagebox, mounted in the Auditorium next to the stage area and run via CAT5.

“We are incredibly pleased with the audio system that has been expertly installed in the Sir Geoffrey Peren Building,” says a spokesperson for Massey University. “The audio fidelity is quite impressive – we are able to hear all around the room and balcony without the sound being too loud.”

JPRO is excited to announce the release of the JBL PRX ONE All-In-One Powered Column Array PA System and Pro Connect Control App.

“Whether you’re a singer/songwriter, DJ, corporate presenter or educator, sounding great is critical,” says Brandon Knudsen, JBL Product Manager, Loudspeaker Professional Solutions. “So, when we set out to design a new compact column PA, acoustic performance was top of our list. But at the same time, we know that every scenario is unique.”

“We’ve outfitted the PRX ONE with an incredibly versatile feature set that we believe will appeal to a broad range of users and performers: Easily portable with punch and throw for Rental companies with the ability of permanent installation thanks to the wall-mount brackets.”

As the 93rd annual Academy Awards ceremony brought together the biggest names in the movie industry to recognise the most outstanding cinematic achievements of the past year, one star was certain to shine. JBL Professional loudspeakers were used to provide sound reinforcement for the ceremony’s thousands of guests and nominees at the art deco Union Station in downtown Los Angeles, on April 25, 2021.

Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Oscars® are not only one of the world’s most respected entertainment awards ceremonies, but also the oldest, having begun in 1929. This year was not JBL’s first Oscars® appearance; JBL has long been a key part of the star-studded ceremony, having supplied VerTec line arrays and a multitude of other components for the event’s massive sound system for more than 15 years, including the 85th and 88th editions, as well as at the annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Party in 2017.

JBL is among the most trusted names in cinematic sound, providing generations of movie-going audiences with a jaw-dropping cinema experience.

JBL Cinema Array Worldwide Leaders in Cinema Audio and in NZ
Technology and JBL’s Sonic Cinematic Legacy

With JBL celebrating its 75th birthday this year, the brand’s legacy of cinematic audio excellence is nearly as old as the Academy Awards themselves. In fact, JBL’s role in cinema stretches back to the brand’s very origins—and even earlier still, when “talkies” were taking the movie industry by storm. JBL’s founder James B. Lansing played an instrumental role in developing the Shearer Horn system, a resounding success that was recognized with a Scientific Technical Award from the Motion Picture Academy in 1936.

In the early 1940’s, James Lansing created the “Voice of the Theater” cinema speakers, which set a new standard for the motion picture industry. Lansing continued to develop cinema speakers after founding JBL in 1946.

In the early 1980’s, JBL engineers developed a system concept that was new to cinema: the JBL Bi-Radial® constant-directivity horn technology, which grew to become the JBL 4675 system and set a whole new industry standard. The system was installed in the industry’s reference theater—the Motion Picture Academy’s Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills—which would also go on to be selected as the first THX® Approved speaker system.

And innovation didn’t stop there. During the next decade, JBL introduced the first modern 3-way screen channel system, the JBL 5674, which was installed during renovations of the Goldwyn Theater in 1996 along with custom JBL surrounds and subwoofers, delivering incredible impact, detail and clarity to every seat in the house.

“JBL even won its own Oscar in 2002 for technical achievements in loudspeaker technology.”

JBL even won its own Oscar®! In 2002, three JBL engineers were presented with two of the most prestigious honours that the Motion Picture Academy can give for technical achievements in loudspeaker technology – a Scientific and Engineering Award “for the concept, design and engineering of the modern constant-directivity, direct radiator style motion picture loudspeaker systems,” and a Technical Achievement Award “for the engineering and design of filtered line arrays and screen spreading compensation as applied to motion picture loudspeaker systems.”

Technology and Innovation Propel JBL’s Sonic Cinematic Future

Engineered to invoke emotion and meet the demands of the moment, whether they’re reproducing a quiet, intimate scene or an aggressively loud action sequence, JBL’s cinema sound excellence continues unabated to this day, with JBL products found in 40% of movie theatres around the world, including the majority of Dolby® equipped theaters. JBL speakers also appear in Warner Brothers, Technicolor and Dolby® screening rooms, as well as The Directors Guild of America and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

JBL is always thinking about the future of how audiences will experience Oscar®-nominated films. Engineers at JBL recently worked on developing a custom Sculpted Sound solution for Samsung’s groundbreaking new Cinema LED technology called “Onyx” that are being installed in theatres around the world.

“Today, JBL is among the most trusted names in cinema sound, as our role in the 93rd Academy Awards demonstrates,” said Dave Rogers, President of the Lifestyle Division. “After decades of collaboration with the movie industry, JBL’s expertise has grown and evolved alongside the silver screen, ensuring that generations of movie-going audiences around the world continue to experience jaw-dropping cinema sound.”

First UK installation of JBL’s new compact 8″ VTX A8 line array in council-owned venue, supplied and installed by SSE Audio Group.

Islington’s Grade II-listed Assembly Hall has committed to an investment in its technical infrastructure, including the first UK installation of JBL’s new VTX A8 line array system at front of house.

Motivated by the experienced management team of Lucinda Brown and Technical Manager, Tom Watt, the Council-owned building, part of Islington Town Hall complex, can now build on a reputation that has seen Ed Sheeran, Rag’n’Bone Man and Snow Patrol play there in the past.

Future-proofing the installation will bring further stability to a venue which first opened back in 1929 before closing in the mid-1980s.After laying dormant for around 30 years Islington Council funded its refurbishment, and in 2010 it appeared back on the touring map.

Following a competitive tender, the Islington Assembly Hall team chose JBL’s new flagship VTX A-Series, specifically A8 and B18 elements.

The installation was undertaken by SSE Audio Group, who were also responsible for the new JBL VTX A12 installation (with VTX A8 acting as delays and front-fills) at London’s Troxy—coincidentally another Grade II-listed art deco building like the Assembly Hall. Able to use the existing infrastructure, and taking advantage of the advanced JBL rigging, they were able to hoist and align the system expediently, much to the delight of the venue.

“SSE worked hard to get the system in quickly working around events, and expedited the delivery seamlessly in the time allotted.” says Tom Watt.

They have flown L/R hangs of six VTX A8 elements per side, adding a further two as lip fills on the stage. Low frequency extension is provided by six B18 single 18” subs, with the entire system powered by four Crown I-Tech 4x3500HD four-channel amplifiers.

After hearing Troxy’s JBL system Tom Watt observed, “I knew the A8 was a 3-way system and it seemed to cover the midrange better, but the HF detail is also incredible. With this PA you notice reflections far less and it worked straight out of the box, with flat EQ. With the 110° degree dispersion, we were able to dispense with the old centre cluster we had before, as the Left / Right stereo imaging is amazing.”

Ed Jackson, Harman Pro Tour Sound Application Engineer, ensured the system was optimised, carrying out EASE room predictions and using Harman’s proprietary Line Array Calculator (LAC)—lowering the PA to hit both the narrow balcony and the back of the room.

“Ed’s design was excellent,” praises Watt. “I wasn’t certain six boxes would be enough to hit the back of the room but it is all the weight-loading would withstand. It was a huge relief to find that it was sufficient.”

The subsonic sound is critical since the venue is situated in the densely populated Upper Street and sound has to be contained to avoid noise pollution. “There is huge headroom in both the subs and the amplifiers,” notes Watt.

The venue also added a Soundcraft Vi3000 which Watt describes as “extremely fast … everything is where you want it on the surface; there are plenty of faders and it sounds amazing, with warmth and precision.”

Ed Jackson is satisfied that the A8 concept has been proven. “My prime concerns were that we had coverage to the back of the room, which was noticeably lacking in the old PA, and achieve uniform balcony coverage. If it hadn’t worked with the shorter array we would probably have walked away.

“In terms of sound quality from the transducers this series has got the physical parts of the cabinets right to the point where we are not so reliant on DSP. The system sounds good as soon as you turn it on.”

Lucinda Brown is likewise impressed, both with the new system and the marketability it will give the venue. “We want to be the best and we can only offer that with high quality. Already people are appreciating the difference this system makes.” In addition to visiting sound engineers, this includes the venue’s own tech team, who are unanimous in their praise.

The momentum hasn’t stopped there, for Islington Assembly Hall have also just added six Martin MAC Quantum Wash lighting fixtures.

However, for now it’s all about the sound, and the last word on that goes to Tom Watt. “We now have a PA of which this fabulous building is worthy,” he declares with a smile.

The hybrid working environment is here to stay and the future of work will centre on how people connect remotely. We have been compelled to consider all work from home technologies for remote working, teaching and learning essentials. Part of a ‘new normal’ is working from home, conducting remote meetings via web conferencing, distance learning and professional consultations through video.

HARMAN PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS KEY TO NEW ZEALAND’S MODERN FLEXIBLE LEARNING SPACES.

Situated in the picturesque New Zealand town of Queenstown and near to its famous outdoor sporting and tourist locations, the newly built Wakatipu High School has breathtaking views of the Remarkables mountain range and Southern Alps.

Wakatipu High is one of several Kiwi schools that are embracing OECD Innovative Learning Environment principles, with flexible learning spaces and open plan learning environments, all of which encourage collaborative educational methods. The way teachers and learners engage with each other has changed significantly, which has led to changes in the way schools are designed. As a result, many new school building projects are designed with this method in mind, while older schools are being renovated to accomplish the same philosophy.

Built in a public-private partnership, the relocated state-of-the-art school was built to designing quality learning spaces (DQLS) guidelines, ensuring good lighting, acoustics and ventilation, and to meet a high standard of technology. Wakatipu has a strong focus on arts, indoor and outdoor sports and boasts facilities like a performing arts theatre, gymnasium, a café, aerobics room, dance and music recording studio.

The high technology requirement meant partnering with experts in audio and visual system integration. Leading AV integration company Strawberry Sound provided a HARMAN Professional school integration solution. JPRO NZ, one of New Zealand’s foremost specialists in Sound System design and supplier of HARMAN Professional audio equipment, was called upon because of their audio and product knowledge base, extensive support and ability to provide a unique approach to AV solutions.
The school’s intercom paging system and the sound systems for the gymnasium and auditorium run over fibre ties with Dante distribution between zones, providing a Layer 3 backbone. Audio processing is done with the open architecture platform BSS Soundweb Audio Architect. This design element creates a completely customisable platform for the end-client with an audio and paging system tailored specifically for their needs.

“Due to the open architecture platform, we can add customised panel settings via iPad for the paging system if required”

Future proofing was taken into consideration with the paging and PABX system that has been programmed to offer an all-page or individual-page zones. “Due to the open architecture platform, we can add customised panel settings via iPad for the paging system if required” adds Reuben Pearce of Strawberry. “The PABX has the ability to dial into the BSS BLU-103 if needed, and page school-wide through the headset.”

Audio processing and distribution is done primarily with BSS BLU-103 and BLU-100 signal processors and audio distributed throughout the school with JBL Control series and JBL CSS8006BM commercial series speakers.

“We encountered a challenge ensuring the Dante clocks synced over Layer 3,” comments JPRO NZ’s technical specialists when talking about the audio distribution via Dante. “This was ultimately achieved with the BSS BLU-DAN that adds Dante to the BSS network and has proven to be extremely solid and reliable.”

The music, dance and drama suites are purposeful, with three soundproof rooms available. A music recording studio and dance studio overlook the impressive cultural and performing arts auditorium that features a solid sound reinforcement system with JBL SRX812P powered 12” loudspeakers flown in a left-centre-right configuration. JBL SRX818SP subwoofers are flown using a customised rigging frame and take care of the lower bass frequencies.

“We are extremely satisfied with the way the SRX series is able to handle varying content, providing consistent and even distribution in the room,” adds Ryan Dougherty from Strawberry Sound. Audio is kept within the digital domain with a Soundcraft Si Impact Digital Mixer at FOH, MSB-16i Digital Stage Box with time-alignment and processing via BSS BLU-100.

“Good quality speakers mean better coverage at a lower volume, often with less speakers due to the efficiency of its coverage in a professional audio design. This in turn has a positive impact on teachers and pupils as they are not mentally fatigued due to poor sound and acoustics.”

With school’s embracing technology from an educational perspective, the importance of using good quality audio visual equipment and loudspeakers is critical. “Good quality speakers mean better coverage at a lower volume, often with less speakers due to the efficiency of its coverage in a professional audio design” says JPRO’s audio experts. “This in turn has a positive impact on teachers and pupils as they are not mentally fatigued due to poor sound and acoustics.”

Building project manager Blair Grier says that Wakatipu High has the best acoustic system he has installed in his 28 years in the industry.

When asked what some of his favourite features of the school were, principal Steve Hall says “The Arts Department with its new dance rehearsal rooms and a recording studio – and the Arts Theatre that can seat up to 600 people, which would be used ‘heaps’!”

JBL708P POWERED MASTER REFERENCE MONITORS PROVIDE ACCURATE DETAILED IMAGERY TO HELP INSPIRE COMPOSING OF THE 36TH AMERICA’S CUP SOUNDTRACK

From the opening note, there’s no mistaking that the 36th America’s Cup takes place in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Opportunity

NZ guitarist, composer and producer Arli Liberman was given the honour to compose the opening music titles of this prestigious event.

The soundtrack combines futuristic elements, NZ culture and Kiwi flavour together to create an inspiring anthem that establishes the event firmly in New Zealand.

“This experience has been the complete opposite of anything that I have produced thus far,” says Arli. “It is indeed an honour to be involved with this unbelievable sport, combining technology with nature.”

The Solution

Arli relies on the accuracy of JBL708P Powered Master Reference Monitors and AKG Studio Headphones for his film scoring and composing projects.

“This project needed true versatility with the sonic palate that was required. When I decided to take the sound of the boat and use it as my focal point, it was essential that my production speakers have the most accurate, fast response to create the effects and imagery needed. The JBL 708P definitely meets this criteria.”

“We had multiple venues that demanded a specific combination of audio systems, so we used an assortment of JBL VTX loudspeakers. We also had tight SPL restrictions in most venues, whilst keeping the system sounding energetic and full, which we managed to deliver perfectly,” said Juan Soothill of NZ Sound Reinforcement. “We also had very tight load-in times, but with the easy and quick rigging of JBL’s VTX A-Series, we managed to get each system up and running extremely fast.”

“We required a high-fidelity audio solution for the festival, as we were looking to enhance the festival’s sound and provide an immersive atmosphere,” said one of the event’s organisers. “We needed a partner to set up a unique networked audio system with exceptional sound to support some of the world’s biggest artists performing at the festival, and NZ Sound Reinforcement delivered exceptional service.”

New Zealand’s most awarded individual artist Bic Runga recently celebrated the 20th Anniversary of her debut album with a New Zealand tour.

Regarded as one of the most iconic albums in New Zealand history, Drive was released in August 1997. It achieved platinum status seven times and won the New Zealand Music Award for Album of the Year in 1998.

Audiences were treated to a special full band performance of the entire album along with carefully chosen hits and select gems from her numerous multi-platinum releases, with accompaniment by special guests.

The Auckland leg of the anniversary tour was held at The Civic Performance Art Theatre to a sold-out audience. Guests were in for an unforgettable experience from talented artists and state-of-the-art production equipment.

The main sound system supplied especially for the event was JBL Professional’s newest line array series – the VTX A12. Designed from the ground up, JBL VTX A12 is a dual 12″ three-way line array element that has been purpose built for mid-to-large size touring applications and high-end fixed installations – which was perfectly suited for The Civic.

“When we were given the opportunity to mix with the VTX A12, it was a no-brainer really,” says leading sound engineer Kevin Bennett, who mixed FOH for the show. “I have never received as many compliments from an audience as I did after this performance. Sonically the A12 is exceptionally smooth – on and off axis. Very little tweaking was necessary to get the system to work at its optimum in the venue.”

It is seldom that an artist comments on the sound quality of a show, yet Bic was gracious enough to offer a spontaneous remark.

“The audience response to this show was not something I was expecting,” comments Bic Runga. “I do think a combination of Kevin Bennett’s experienced mixing and the PA he got to use gave the show an extra clarity and presence that translated to a special experience for the listener. Most of our feedback after the show was not just about the music, but about the sound quality – it seemed to move them.”

Four VTX A12 loudspeakers per side were ground-stacked to cover the floor area, while six VTX A12’s were flown to cover the balcony. 2x JBL VTX G28 subwoofers per side were used for the bottom end.

JBL have completely redesigned the rigging system for the A12 which has made a notable difference when setting up the system.

“The system is amazingly quick to install,” says Kevin Bennett. “When I entered the venue to set up the console, the rigging was almost complete and the PA ready to sound check before I was!”

“Most of our feedback after the show was not just about the music, but about the sound quality – it seemed to move them.”

Kevin mixed the show using Soundcraft’s smaller format Vi2000 digital console – which was just the right size for the band accompanying Bic Runga.

“I have a soft spot for the BSS DPR901ii Dynamic EQ,” quips Bennett. “I am familiar with the earlier generation Vi consoles and the straightforward, analogue-like design that allows for instant responses makes mixing a pleasure, as does the exceptional audio quality and road-proven reliability. Vi2000 is now my go-to console for smaller gigs.”

JBL’s flagship VTX-M professional stage monitors with their excellent sound quality ensured low but clear stage volume so that the musicians never missed a beat.

“We are immensely proud that we were able provide high-quality sound equipment for an icon such as Bic Runga in a venue like The Civic” concludes Tim Robertson, Tour Sound manager for JBL Professional distributor JPRO. “There has been fantastic interest with the VTX A12 locally and our aim is to have it added to more technical riders in the New Zealand market.”

HARMAN PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS KEY TO NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT TECHNICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

The Opportunity

The Christchurch Justice and Emergency Services Precinct was the first major government building to be built in Christchurch after a series of devastating earthquakes destroyed the city centre in 2011.

Completed in late 2017, the Precinct was purpose-built with an emphasis on collaboration, bringing together all regional justice and emergency services. The precinct is home to the Ministry of Justice, New Zealand Police, Department of Corrections, St John Ambulance, Fire and Emergency, Civil Defence and Emergency Management services. The Justice Building houses 19 courtrooms and associated court and legal functions.

The Solution

Due to the critical nature of the services rendered by the agencies in the Precinct, reliable specially configured loudspeakers and microphones are needed to reproduce high quality audio.

Leading audio visual systems integrator and supplier of courtroom and chamber technologies, Vega Global (formerly Kodum), were contracted to design, supply and install robust cutting edge audio and visual systems within the Justice and Emergency Services Precinct.

“It was essential the audio visual systems would work within the complex IT infrastructure of the Justice and Emergency Services Precinct. They are excellent.”

System Features
  • JBL Professional Control Contractor series ceiling and wall mounted loudspeakers achieve balanced sound quality and broad, consistent coverage throughout the indoor sections.
  • Control 47LP low-profile ceiling speakers are utilised in the areas with limited above-ceiling clearance with JBL’s Radiation Boundary Integrator providing very consistent coverage throughout the listening area.
  • Control 47HC loudspeakers with a well-defined narrow coverage pattern provide improved sound quality and intelligibility in reverberant and high ceiling spaces.
  • A range of AKG gooseneck and boundary microphones are deployed in the 19 courtrooms providing exceptional sound reproduction through the sound reinforcement and audio visual recording systems.
  • Across the Precinct, BSS Soundweb audio processors form an integral part of the audio management and audio distribution.
The Impact

“During the design and construction phase it was essential the audio visual systems would work within the complex IT infrastructure of the Justice and Emergency Services Precinct,” says James Thompson, Civil Defence New Zealand. “The systems are excellent. Kodum were key partners in establishing our audio visual needs and have walked with us every step of the way. Post commissioning they have been readily available to help with fine tuning the system.”

The interior design and architecture features are inspired by music and sound, while the state-of-the-art technical infrastructure was conceptualised by the MediaWorks NZ technical team.

“We searched world-wide for the best-integrated technologies and have really transcended the limits on what is a once-in-a-lifetime project that we are all so very proud of.”

The Solution

“The technology that underpins the content delivery from Hargreaves St represents a significant upgrade in capability and is one of the world’s largest deployments of audio-over-IP,” says MediaWorks chairman Jack Matthews.

The studio suites have been optimised to allow for future video recording and live televised broadcasting. Radio Stations such as More FM require various satellite uplinks and local breakouts that simultaneously run a combination of localised and networked programming for different geographical areas.

A world class facility of this nature required affordable world-leading studio monitors for accurate audio in any production space and studio.

A combination of JBL Professional 3 Series 305PMKII 5” and 308PMKII 8” powered reference monitors were selected, depending on the layout of the studio. The JBL 3 series delivers an impressive dynamic range for a variety of music genres between the nine radio stations. The patented Image Control Waveguide provides a wide sweet spot with precise detail and imaging, allowing for tight segues and compelling audio imaging.
