The University of Auckland has opened its new 26,000-square-metre state-of-the-art home for sport, recreation and student life – the Hiwa Recreation Centre. Located in the heart of the student precinct, it serves as both a wellness destination and a social hub for the University community.
The eight-floor centre features New Zealand’s largest gym fit-out, cardio zones, rooftop turf and running track, two sports halls, an aquatics hall, squash courts and a bouldering wall – offering something for everyone.
The original facility on Symonds Street, built in 1978 for a campus of 10,000 students, could no longer meet the needs of today’s 46,000 students and 5,000 staff. It had reached capacity and was limiting opportunities for recreation and wellbeing.

Following extensive consultation, the new Recreation Centre was designed to enrich campus life and foster lifelong wellbeing. Research shows that students who used the facility weekly achieved significantly better grades. With green rooftops for recreation and reflection, spaces that connect users to nature and one another and roof turf with sweeping views of Auckland and the harbour, the centre stands as a vibrant central hub for student life.
Hiwa’s scale and unique design meant that an audio system was needed that could deliver not only high-quality sound, but also flexibility and ease of use. AV integrator Connect NZ was selected for the audiovisual contract and worked in close partnership with the University of Auckland’s AV design team to deliver a seamless integrated solution.
JBL Professional loudspeakers were selected for their exceptional sound performance, long-term durability and versatility across diverse spaces. Systems were supplied and supported by JPRO, JBL’s New Zealand distributor, who worked with the project team to ensure the right solutions were delivered for each application. Engineered to withstand heat, humidity and outdoor exposure, JBL’s weather-resistant loudspeakers deliver clear, consistent audio throughout, from indoor fitness studios to rooftop training zones, enhancing every moment within the space.
“We’ve tried various brands over the years but always come back to JBL. Their loudspeakers are reliable and purpose-built, and the support we receive from distributor JPRO makes a project of this scale far simpler.”

A diverse mix of speakers were installed to meet the acoustic and environmental demands of each space, while maintaining consistent, high-quality audio across the entire facility. JBL AC28-95 loudspeakers and ASB6118 subwoofers feature prominently in high-energy zones such as the Group Fitness, Dance and Bike Studios, delivering detailed high-output sound with added low-end support. The compact form factor of the AC28-95s suits flexible and visually sensitive spaces, while the powerful ASB6118 subs enhance impact for music-led workouts. In Sports Halls 1 and 2 CBT 70J column arrays and AC28-95 loudspeakers respectively provide wide, even coverage for large, dynamic environments.
Weather-resistant solutions were key for challenging areas such as the Aquatic Hall, Rooftop and Outdoor Turf. JBL AWC82 all-weather loudspeakers and CBT 1000 column arrays with CBT 1000E low frequency extenders were deployed for their durability and consistent performance in high-humidity and open-air settings. CBT 70Js on the rooftop and around the running track ensure wide, controlled coverage, while Control 25-1 and SLP14-T on-wall speakers cater to more intimate zones like entrances and quiet areas. Pendant models such as the Control 65PT and 67PT blend seamlessly into the open ceilings of the weights rooms, offering impactful sound for every workout.
The entire audio system throughout the Recreation Centre is distributed via Dante and powered by Crown DCi DriveCore installation amplifiers. Designed for demanding, mission-critical environments, the DCi Series delivers clean sound and rock-solid reliability. To streamline installation, reduce cable runs and simplify ongoing system management, multiple equipment racks were installed across each level of the building.

“Every part of the building, from the rooftop turf to the sports halls, has clear reliable sound that really lifts the experience.”
The Impact
Throughout all applications, JBL Professional’s loudspeaker solutions help elevate the energy, clarity and versatility of the new facility.
“It’s exciting to see a project of this scale come to life and we’re really pleased with the overall outcome,” says Paul Edlin, Audio Designer and Sales Director at JPRO. “All the loudspeakers have performed as per the design modelling. All in all, this is a great upgrade for the Rec Centre.”
The University AV Design Team agrees: “We’ve tried various brands over the years but always come back to JBL. Their loudspeakers are reliable and purpose-built, and the support we receive from distributor JPRO makes a project of this scale far simpler. From system design and specification to final commissioning, Paul Edlin and his team are world-class.”
Keith Block, General Manager of Connect NZ, adds: “It’s been fantastic working with JPRO to deliver the audio system for Hiwa. Rolling out a solution for a facility of this size and complexity, easily one of the biggest gym fit-outs in the Southern Hemisphere, was a real challenge but also a great opportunity. Together we made sure every part of the building, from the rooftop turf to the sports halls, has clear reliable sound that really lifts the experience. It’s awesome to see how Hiwa is already making a difference on campus and in the wider community. We’re proud to have played a part in bringing this world-class facility to life.”
Aquatic Hall
High humidity and corrosive conditions made JBL’s AWC82 all-weather loudspeakers the ideal choice for the Aquatic Hall, delivering clear, consistent audio for music and announcements across the stainless steel pool, spa, sauna and dive well. CBT 1000 line array column speakers with CBT 1000E extenders are discreetly installed on either side of the large video wall, JBL’s Constant Beamwidth Technology providing even, powerful coverage from the pool to the Spectator Mezzanine and Pool Lounge, despite acoustically challenging environments.
Group Fitness, Body and Dance Studios
JBL’s compact AC28-95 loudspeakers, supported by ASB6118 subwoofers, deliver high-output, detailed audio for music-driven classes. Their unobtrusive design suits the flexible studio spaces, used for group sessions and individual workouts.
Sports Halls
Home to the Southern Hemisphere’s first full glass LED sports floor, Sports Hall 1 supports a range of activities on a single dynamic surface. JBL CBT 70J column loudspeakers are positioned for even coverage, reducing overall volume while delivering clear audio throughout the space.
In Sports Hall 2, JBL AC28-95 loudspeakers positioned in the ceiling plenum deliver high-output, clear audio across the timber-floored court. With pre-marked lines for basketball, volleyball, netball, futsal and badminton, the space is ready for a wide range of indoor sports.
Rooftop
JBL CBT 70J column loudspeakers, weather-rated for outdoor use, provide consistent coverage across the rooftop pitch that is used for football, hockey, tennis and more. Four speakers are mounted on each side, with additional CBT 70Js along the running track and Control 25-1 on-wall speakers at the entrance. The rooftop also includes seating and open space for study, relaxation and fitness.
Cardio Room
JBL Control 16CT ceiling loudspeakers deliver clear, high-quality audio throughout the cardio rooms, supporting a wide range of medium to high-intensity workouts.
Weights Room
JBL Control65PT and 67PT pendant loudspeakers provide clear, detailed audio throughout the expansive weights area. Blending seamlessly into the open ceiling, they deliver consistent coverage across zones for resistance training, dumbbell work and powerlifting.

Why choose JBL Professional speakers over consumer speakers for schools, churches and wedding or sports venues?
When a school, church or venue is investing in sound, it’s tempting to compare professional speakers with what looks similar in a retail store. They may look alike, but they are designed for very different jobs.
Here’s why JBL Professional speakers are the best choice for education and performance spaces.
Built to last – and backed to do so
JBL Professional speakers are designed for daily use in real venues — assemblies, performances, sports events and presentations. They are built with stronger components, better heat management and robust cabinets that can handle years of use.
Just as importantly, JBL Professional systems come with a professional 7 year manufacturer warranty, designed for commercial and educational environments. Consumer speakers are typically warrantied for home use only, which can leave schools exposed if something fails.
Sound that reaches the back of the room
One of the biggest differences is throw distance — how far the sound travels clearly.
Consumer speakers are designed for living rooms. They sound fine up close, but quickly lose clarity as distance increases. JBL Professional speakers are engineered to project sound evenly across large spaces, so students at the back of the hall hear the same clear speech as those in the front.
This means:
- Clearer assemblies/meetings/ceremonies
- Better speech intelligibility
- More consistent sound across the room
No need to turn the system up uncomfortably loud just to reach the back row.
Fit for Purpose
The design philosophy is very different.
Consumer speakers are made for short listening distances and casual use. JBL Professional systems are designed for rooms full of people, where clear speech, audio coverage of the whole area and reliability matter more than flashy features.
Professional systems focus on:
- Clear voice reproduction for announcements and teaching
- Even coverage so everyone hears the same message
- Reliable operation for staff who just need it to work
A smarter long-term investment
While consumer speakers can appear cheaper upfront, they are rarely designed to meet the demands of a school or venue. Professional systems last longer, perform better in larger spaces, and are supported properly if something goes wrong.
At JPRO, we help schools choose systems that are fit for purpose — not over-engineered, not underpowered, just right for the space and the people using it.

BEHIND THE ROUND DOORS: HOW INVISIBLE LIGHTING AND AV DESIGN BROUGHT HOBBITON’S HOBBIT HOLES TO LIFE
When visitors step from their tourist coaches onto the rolling hills of Hobbiton in Matamata, New Zealand, they enter a land that has lived in the collective imagination of millions since J.R.R. Tolkien first described The Shire.
Originally a temporary film set for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, this section of the Alexander sheep farm was rebuilt for The Hobbit trilogy before becoming a permanent tourist attraction in 2012. Thousands of visitors each day stroll along its winding paths, imagining what lies on the other side of the round doors of the 40-plus Hobbit holes tucked into the folds of the sloping landscape.
For years, there was nothing on the other side, the iconic doors mere movie-set façades. Then, in April 2023, Owner Russell Alexander, Hobbiton CEO Shayne Forrest, Project Lead Brian Massey, and Creative Director Ra Vincent set about to create two fully-habitable Hobbit holes on Bagshot Row.
Today, when visitors enter the homes, they see the same snug, earth-sheltered, natural abodes with the curving architecture, soft oil lamps, and hand-crafted furniture that Director Peter Jackson envisioned for the films. Guests wander first through bedrooms, a parlor, and a bathroom, and then continue their tour in the second half of the home, taking in a kitchen, dining room, study, and pantries stocked to reflect the trades of the two families, the Twofoots and the Proudfoots, one in wicker baskets and the other in wine and cheese.
While oil lamps flicker warmly, most of the lighting in the underground, concrete bunkers remains unobtrusive, allowing visitors to forget that they are in an attraction. It is the subtlety of the illumination and the apparent absence of light sources and technology that make the design stand out.

Into the Hobbit Hole
“Every light had to be built-in, disguised as lanterns, or made invisible,” noted Simpson. The team began by adding 24-V, 2700K COB LED light strips to a decorative rail that sat at shoulder-height, the lower lights washing downward and the uppers gently illuminating the domed roof. LED light strips were also integrated into each piece of furniture, from shelves to drawers and tables. For high shelves, recessed lights were placed at their bases, thus shining upward, while busier shelves possess luminaires at the front edge that shine both up and down. Each piece of joinery was given legs so that there would be room for under-lighting beneath tables and cabinetry.
As the project moved along, Simpson and the team worked collaboratively with the furniture and props designers, marking up all drawings and designs, indicating where lights would go and spending many hours in the various workshops resolving how the cables could be routed, exiting into the wall before connecting into the roof.
“The illuminated Hobbit holes on Bagshot Row demonstrate how design, craft and technology can converge to create immersive environments.”

This illumination created a warm and cozy aesthetic, but it didn’t provide enough light. “It was beautiful but there was no direction. It wasn’t punchy enough,” admitted Simpson. This concern tied into early discussions about creating “Instagram moments”—photo spots where groups of visitors could gather, perhaps pose at the head of a table, and quickly capture memorable images. To meet this need, Simpson introduced subtle ceiling illumination within the molded, fire-safe, plaster-like ceiling beams, hiding Lightstudio’s K1X30 periscope downlights in knots and splits within the timber. Alongside these were deeply recessed, adjustable, Bevel Flute mini 3-W downlights from LightKit. These were fitted between the beams in the crafted plaster ceilings, carefully themed and hidden so that when guests entered a room or took a photo, the light sources were never visible.
Lanterns, sconces, and chandeliers constituted an additional layer of illumination. These fixtures needed to appear like Tolkien’s oil lamps, but commercially available flame bulbs, often designed for the distant stage, were not convincing at close range. Instead, Toulouse iterated multiple prototypes, building miniature flame-effect LED screens to replace the lamps until the glow was natural to those in the immediate vicinity. The Toulouse workshop team—Nora Thunders, Matthias Goeb, Oscar Pierson, and Jed Drake-Brockman—also developed a bespoke light source by fitting more than 120 sources into the hand-built lanterns, wall sconces, and chandeliers created by the Hobbiton Art Department themed to pass as Hobbit craftwork.
The glasswork was created by a scientific glassblower who, starting with Pyrex tubing designed for lab equipment, blew, twisted, and frosted the glass to create authentic lantern shades. These were painted and aged by the art department. Meanwhile, the Toulouse team engineered custom LED flame boards by adapting and modifying designs found online. These boards play looping flame animations and, when installed back-to-back in fixtures, give the appearance of a natural flicker. Each chandelier head can play a slightly different animation, producing an effect that makes the flames look convincingly real. The LED flames provide control over brightness, color, and flicker speed, allowing, for example, a bright daytime scene to transition into a dimmed evening setting.
The immersive effect extends beyond the interior lighting. Weather-responsive window projections powered by Epson UST EB-805F ultra-short-throw projectors allow visitors to look “outside” and see the same clouds or sunshine they just experienced outdoors.

“Environmental audio is layered subtly through Crown CDI4300 amplification and JBL Control 23 speakers.”
There and Back Again
Behind the scenes, the scale of the installation was considerable, including over 750 channels of dimming across roughly 800 fixtures, most addressed individually. “Every light or every piece of furniture is a different channel, so they could all be balanced,” said Simpson. Achieving that balance resulted in long hours of fine-tuning, adjusting levels so that one light didn’t change the effect of another.
To preserve the warmth of Tolkien’s world, vaporproof jelly jars are set at 2700K for a lantern-like glow. Only the LEDs by the windows are slightly warmer, set to 3000K to avoid a “muddy” effect. Power is supplied through a backbone of Meanwell supplies and eldoLED DMX drivers (LIN180D linear drive DC 180 watts and PW50SA powerdrive), with hundreds of drivers tucked discretely onto the roof. Each is a reliable, multichannel unit designed to run flawlessly through Hobbiton’s 12-hour days, seven days a week.
At the heart of the system is a Pharos Designer control system, programmed with custom Toulouse scripts and synchronized through BrightSign media players so that light, sound, and projection work seamlessly together.
Environmental audio is layered subtly through Crown CDI4300 amplification and JBL Control 23 and Sonance speakers.
In November 2023, eight and a half months after the start of the project, the doors of the two Hobbit holes swung open to their first tourists. The illuminated Hobbit holes on Bagshot Row demonstrate how design, craft and technology can converge to create immersive environments. In these comfy, underground homes, the lighting design disappears into the narrative, guiding visitors, highlighting details, and shaping the mood, lending credence to Bilbo Baggins’ expression: “Bother burgling and everything to do with it! I wish I was at home in my nice hole by the fire, with the kettle just beginning to sing!”

AUDIO UPGRADE AT BRUCE MASON CENTRE IN AUCKLAND ENHANCES SOUND EXPERIENCE WITH JBL VTX A6 SERIES LINE ARRAYS, BSS PROCESSORS AND CROWN AMPLIFIERS
The Bruce Mason Centre, operated by Auckland Live on behalf of Tataki Auckland Unlimited, has completed a significant audio upgrade with the installation of a JBL VTX A6 line array system.
Located in Takapuna on Auckland’s North Shore, the Bruce Mason Centre is one of the region’s premier venues for the performing arts, offering a diverse range of events.
With a seating capacity of over 1,100, it features tiered seating that can be reconfigured into an open-floor space for gala dinners or cocktail receptions, hosting everything from family entertainment and dance performances to live music and comedy shows.

After 20 years of operation, the theatre’s previous system was no longer sufficient to meet the demands of the venue’s evolving event schedule, prompting the decision to upgrade. After careful evaluation, a JBL VTX A6 system was chosen for its compact yet powerful format and flexible rigging system, which simplifies speaker repositioning due to the A Series’ industry-leading design.
The two-year upgrade, delivered by JPRO in consultation with the Auckland Live technical team, included installing new Crown I-Tech 43500HD amplifiers, under balcony fills and rewiring the entire system.
“Venue Synthesis 3D software is remarkably accurate compared to real-world performance, significantly streamlining live tuning and system commissioning.”

The array design and performance predictions were carried out using JBL’s Venue Synthesis 3D Acoustic Simulation software.
“The platform enables precise angle prediction, system tuning and delay time optimisation for each loudspeaker position,” says Tim Robertson, Tour Sound Manager with JBL Professional distributor JPRO. “It is remarkably accurate compared to real-world performance, significantly streamlining live tuning and system commissioning.”

“The VTX rigging system delivers the flexibility and performance the venue needs for its varied event schedule.”
The upgraded system now includes two flown arrays, each consisting of 12 x VTX A6 dual 6-inch line array elements. Using JBL’s ArrayLink mobile app which integrates seamlessly with the Venue Synthesis 3D Acoustic Simulation software, JPRO developed six system presets to streamline deployment. With the combination of ArrayLink and the VTX A Series’ quick-rigging system, the arrays can be scaled, repositioned and ready to operate in under 30 minutes, depending on event requirements.
Twelve VTX B18 arrayable 18-inch subwoofers are deployed in a cardioid configuration and can be either flown or ground stacked. For under-balcony coverage, eight JBL AC18 high-performance compact loudspeakers are discreetly positioned. The system is powered by Crown I-Tech 43500HD amplifiers, with audio management handled by BSS BLU-806 networked signal processors.
“The VTX rigging system delivers the flexibility and performance the venue needs for its varied event schedule,” said Lindsay Clements from the Bruce Mason Centre technical team. “The sound is really clean and holds up beautifully across different instruments and sources.”
JBL PROFESSIONAL SYSTEM ENHANCES GUEST EXPERIENCE AT THE SEBEL WELLINGTON LOWER HUTT
Audio Workshop recently completed the installation of a cutting-edge HARMAN Professional multizone sound system at The Sebel Wellington Lower Hutt, a premium Accor hotel located along the scenic Hutt River.
The hotel offers a sophisticated and welcoming environment for its guests, and its stylish contemporary design demands an equally high-quality sound system capable of supporting a variety of settings, from ambient background music in public spaces to vibrant soundscapes in bars, restaurants and outdoor areas. Audio Workshop was engaged to develop and implement a solution that would deliver clear, high-quality audio across multiple zones while remaining unobtrusive and maintaining a relaxed atmosphere throughout the hotel.
Led by Matt Chapman, Audio Workshop selected a range of HARMAN Professional products to ensure premium sound quality, reliability and ease of operation. The system was designed to integrate seamlessly across five floors, with each area of the hotel benefiting from tailored audio delivery to suit its individual purpose.

Flexibility and ease of use was important, allowing hotel staff to manage the audio experience in every zone. Whether adjusting volume in the restaurant, selecting a different audio source for the lobby or fine-tuning sound levels in the outdoor spaces, the system provides intuitive and convenient control across the entire property.
Inside the lobby and reception areas, JBL Control 16CT ceiling loudspeakers were deployed to deliver clean, discreet audio, allowing ambient background music to gently shape the atmosphere without visually intruding on the space. This extended all the way to the lifts, providing guests with a seamless experience from the moment they step inside the building.
Control 16CT speakers in black were installed in the hotel’s bar and restaurant areas to match the interior design, while delivering clarity and warmth, helping to establish a pleasant audio backdrop for dining and socialising.
“The HARMAN Professional solution with JBL, Crown and BSS integrates seamlessly, which is why I specify it for so many projects.”

Outdoors where the Wellington climate can be less predictable, JBL Control 25-1 loudspeakers with WeatherMax grilles were selected. Covering the terraces and valet zones, their rugged build and weather-resistant design ensure guests enjoy the same high-quality sound outdoors as they do indoors.
Apart from the lift areas, all audio zones are powered by Crown CDi amplifiers. Designed to streamline installations, the CDi range has become a favourite among integrators because of their versatility, reliability and powerful onboard digital signal processing and networking capabilities, delivering strong performance at an attractive cost.
Loudspeaker management and control is handled by a BSS BLU-100 networked signal processor, ensuring reliable distribution across all zones. Its flexible open architecture and seamless integration allow the hotel to adjust settings for each area, such as control over source selection or volume levels, enabling staff to manage the system effortlessly.

“The BSS BLU digital signal processors are particularly robust and reliable; I’ve never had an issue with them.”
To enhance usability, BSS Contrio EC-8BV Ethernet wall controllers were installed in key locations including reception and restaurant areas. These intuitive interfaces allow staff to adjust volume or switch audio sources with just a few taps, making day-to-day operation straightforward even for users with minimal technical experience.
The system went live smoothly, immediately transforming the hotel’s audio experience. Hotel management has since praised its ease of use, consistent sound quality and reliability.
Reflecting on the project, Matt Chapman explains: “The HARMAN Professional solution with JBL, Crown and BSS integrate seamlessly, which is why I specify it for so many projects. The BSS BLU digital signal processors are particularly robust and reliable; I’ve never had an issue with them. They perform exactly as they should, every time.”
IT WAS A FULL JBL PROFESSIONAL DEPLOYMENT FOR JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR AT DUNEDIN’S HISTORIC REGENT THEATRE, WHERE TAIERI MUSICAL BROUGHT THE ICONIC ROCK OPERA TO LIFE FOR NEW ZEALAND AUDIENCES.
When Taieri Musical staged Jesus Christ Superstar at Dunedin’s Regent Theatre, it wasn’t just the award-winning cast and crew who delivered a showstopper. Behind the scenes, a full JBL Professional sound system powered the rock opera with clarity, impact and energy fit for one of New Zealand’s grandest stages.
The Regent Theatre, with its ornate baroque-revival interior and 1600 seats is a landmark in its own right. But for sound engineers, its scale and architecture present a serious challenge. How do you make sure every audience member from the front row to the circle under the balcony, hears every word and every note with the same intensity?

That task fell to the team from Strawberry who supplied the sound equipment, with system engineering led by Dave Bennet. “In a theatre like the Regent the challenge is covering all the seats while staying out of the sightlines,” Bennet explains. “You can’t just hang giant speaker arrays in front of the stage and those beautiful views. Instead we used a mix of flown and ground-stacked arrays, discreet under-balcony fills and a few spot fills for the tricky areas.”
The main left and right arrays consisted of three VTX B18 subs with four VTX A8s per side, ground-stacked neatly beneath the proscenium to avoid sightline issues. Additional hangs of four VTX A8s per side covered the circle, while a centre cluster of eight Vertec VT4886s was dedicated to vocals.
Six AC25s provided under-balcony vocal coverage, suspended discreetly from the circle’s front lighting rail, while SRX712s were called in for difficult pockets of coverage and as stage foldback. Everything ran from Crown I-Tech 4×3500 amplifiers, with JBL Performance Manager providing system control and tuning.
“Sound design for a rock musical like Jesus Christ Superstar comes with many challenges and trade-offs, but the JBL range makes it elegant.”

“Right from the outset we knew we had to use a distributed system. The VTX A8’s consistent acoustic performance across its 110-degree horizontal coverage helps a lot when you’re pushed into the corners and planning the fills in advance was key,” Bennet continues. “We had four different generations of loudspeakers managed under one platform showing how handy Performance Manager is. It’s been a great tool for deployment, tuning and monitoring.”
Sound designer and mixer Tom Acklin of Crossfade shaped the production’s audio night after night, balancing the rock band with the vocals that drive the story forward. For him, the JBL rig brought both power and finesse.
“Sound design for a rock musical like Jesus Christ Superstar comes with many challenges and trade-offs, but the JBL range makes it elegant,” Acklin says. “The VTX A8 handling the band content is the heart of the system. It ticks many boxes for me as a sound designer, full-range frequency response down to 60Hz, compact size to avoid those sightline issues and a wide 110-degree dispersion that’s perfect for this venue.”

“The JBL VTX A8 is an excellent choice for a musical show that needs big energy in a compact package.”
Acklin emphasises the mix of cabinets as a strength, ensuring every seat receives the same experience. “The VT4886 centre hang carries the vocals, if you’re under the balcony the AC25s are the real star. It’s all about making sure the story reaches everyone, no matter where they’re sitting.”
For a production as bold and timeless as Jesus Christ Superstar, sound is as central to the experience as the staging or choreography. Both Bennet and Acklin agree the Regent Theatre production demonstrated how well the JBL VTX A Series adapts to challenging live theatre environments.
“The key takeaway is that the A8s are at home in this kind of deployment,” Bennet concludes. “From their wide coverage to their impressive low-end output even in small numbers, they’re an excellent choice for a musical show that needs big energy in a compact package.”

15 new models round out a complete 21-speaker lineup to bolster JBL’s Control Contractor offering, providing integrators with a full suite of ceiling speaker solutions with coverage and cost options. With a sleek new design, each model is equipped with user friendly installation features and a bezel-less magnetic grille that seamlessly blends with any environment.

HARMAN Professional Solutions has announced a major expansion to its Control Contractor loudspeaker portfolio with the launch of the JBL Professional Control 400 Standard Coverage Series and Control 400 Premium Coverage Series ceiling speakers. These additions join the previously released Control 400 Enhanced Coverage Series, completing the new-generation Control 400 Ceiling Speaker Family with a comprehensive 21-model lineup.
Designed to deliver JBL’s hallmark sound quality, reliability, and ease of installation across a range of commercial environments, the expanded Control 400 Family introduces a three-tiered approach—Standard, Enhanced, and Premium Coverage Series—giving integrators the flexibility to match coverage consistency and price point to any application.
Building on the legacy of JBL’s popular Control 10, 20, and 40 families, the Control 400 Series introduces a new standard in scalable audio solutions:
- Standard Coverage Series: Designed for budget-conscious projects without compromising on JBL’s signature audio quality. Ideal for applications requiring performance at an accessible price point.
- Enhanced Coverage Series: First introduced earlier this year, these models feature JBL’s Coplanar Radiation Boundary Integrator™ (CRBI™), which offers more even frequency response across the coverage area—bridging the gap between cost-efficiency and high performance.

“With 21 total models now available, the Control 400 Series delivers scalable, high-fidelity audio options for virtually any commercial environment,” said Steve Mathis, Senior Product Manager, Installed Audio at HARMAN Professional Solutions. “These speakers are built for sonic excellence, installer convenience, and architectural compatibility—hallmarks that have long defined JBL’s installed audio solutions.”
Installation-First Design Philosophy
True to JBL’s commitment to the installer community, the Control 400 Series is packed with practical features that streamline the install process. All models support both top and side cable entry, while captive dogear mounts ensure compatibility with a wide range of ceiling types. Most models come equipped with multi-tap transformers for 70V/100V distributed systems and low-impedance operation, maximizing deployment flexibility.
Aesthetics haven’t been overlooked either. The grilles are paintable and include safety tethers to meet both design and safety demands in professional installations.
Whether deployed in corporate offices, hospitality venues, retail environments, or educational institutions, all models in the Control 400 Family are engineered to deliver clear, consistent, and natural sound across the listening area. The Premium Coverage models, in particular, leverage RBI™ technology to maintain even tonal balance and coverage consistency, ideal for spaces where clarity and intelligibility are non-negotiable.

An 8” ceiling subwoofer is also available, wherever added low-frequency response is needed.
SUPERIOR SONIC PERFORMANCE
The Coplanar RBI™, or CRBI™ is a specifically designed waveguide for the Control 400 Series. Delivering an especially smooth sound character that remains consistent, clear and pleasant across a wide coverage area. AMX JETPACK AND JBL PROFESSIONAL PROVIDE OTAUA PRIMARY SCHOOL WITH HASSLE-FREE AV THAT JUST WORKS
Located in the scenic Waiuku countryside, Otaua Primary School is a vibrant rural institution providing a unique learning environment by integrating the natural landscape into their educational programs. The school hall plays an important role in hosting a range of activities for the school and community, from assemblies and performances to movie nights; however, its existing audio visual system had become unreliable and difficult for staff to manage.
Principal Anna Voyce recognised an opportunity to invest in a modern, seamless AV solution that would not only improve the sound and video quality but provide a professional, user-friendly experience for everyone involved.
The school contacted JPRO for advice and worked with Anna to design a system that ticked all the boxes for the teachers and importantly gave the kids that “wow” experience. JPRO then engaged the services of Dan Larsen owner of Alpha Sound to install and commission the system. With the AMX Jetpack AV switching and control kit as the core of the system, Jetpack delivered exactly what the school needed, providing simplified video transport and auto-switching between HDMI and USB-C, straightforward AV system controls and handy remote management features in a single kit that required no custom programming.

The Jetpack bundle includes a three-input wall plate transmitter installed at the technical desk in the hall, connected to the multi-function receiver tucked neatly away. The six-button keypad with volume control offered staff a simple interface to manage audio and video without needing a manual. No need to find the projector remote and figure out what input to use – the AMX Jetpack automatically does that for you.
To deliver clear and even sound throughout the hall, Dan installed JBL Control 25-1 loudspeakers along the walls. A JBL Control SB2210 subwoofer was discreetly positioned to deliver impactful bass, significantly enhancing musical performances and particularly appreciated during movie nights. Amplification is handled by Crown CDi2300 amplifiers, providing robust and reliable power with seamless integration into the PA system via built-in JBL presets.
“The AMX Jetpack gives you high-end performance without the high price, it was straightforward to install and has really made things simpler for the school.”

But perhaps the biggest win? Jetpack’s built-in scheduling capability, which automatically powers down the system when not in use – increasing the life of the projector, saving energy and sparing calls that the projector is still on during holiday periods or weekends.
“You guys make dreams come true; I no longer have anxiety about trying to get the system to work for an assembly or hitting ‘go’ on the laptop and sound system at the same time to try to get the video and audio to sync for the kid’s movie nights!” laughs Anna. “The AMX Jetpack system has simplified and enhanced our audio visual experience, it’s amazing.”
From install to operation, the project ticked every box.

But perhaps the biggest win? Jetpack’s built-in scheduling capability, which automatically powers down the system when not in use.
“The AMX Jetpack gives you high-end performance without the high price,” says Dan. “It was straightforward to install and has really made things simpler for the school. The response from everyone has been fantastic.”
The result is a future-ready hall that meets the school’s needs today and leaves room to grow tomorrow. For Otaua Primary, it’s simplified AV that just works the way it should.

PERFORMING ARTS TAKE CENTRE STAGE WITH NEW JBL SRX900 POWERED LINE ARRAY AT TAIERI COLLEGE
Taieri College’s Performing Arts Centre was due for a transformation. The existing speech reinforcement system was no longer meeting the growing demands of the space, especially as the school’s creative programmes and events expanded. From high-energy music performances to full-scale productions and community events, the venue needed a system that could keep pace.
To bridge the gap, Strawberry Sound’s hire department had been regularly supplying temporary sound systems to accommodate performances such as Rockquest, school productions and other large-scale events. While effective in the short term, this approach was time-consuming and limited the College’s ability to fully utilise their venue’s potential.
“The big focus for us is on music and drama and we needed a versatile sound system that would cope with high-performance music and bands,” says Lyndon Jones, Assistant Principal at Taieri College. “Our previous system was not capable of handling this.”

Recognising the need for a future-proof solution Taieri College once again approached Strawberry Sound, this time to design and install a permanent, high-performance audio system that could meet the needs of both school and external users. The brief was clear: the system had to deliver concert-quality sound, be flexible enough for a wide range of events and remain easy to operate for students and third-party vendors alike.
Strawberry Sound specified the JBL SRX900 Series powered line array system which would be compact, scalable and well-suited to the acoustics and structural limitations of the space.
“We selected the smaller JBL SRX906 line array element for its compact size, lightweight design, exceptional sound quality and ease of rigging,” said Dave Bennett, Senior Sound Technician Strawberry. “The precise array angle control from each cabinet allowed for a fast and accurate setup. Best of all, no major structural modifications were required—we were able to use the existing rigging points to deploy the system efficiently.”
Strawberry specified 12x SRX906LA dual 6.5-inch powered line array loudspeakers, flown six per side, along with 2x SRX918S 18-inch powered subwoofers.
“We selected the smaller JBL SRX906 line array element for its compact size, lightweight design, exceptional sound quality and ease of rigging.”

Setup, configuration and tuning were handled using JBL’s SRX900 Performance software, offering the same workflow and feature set found in Performance Manager for the company’s flagship VTX systems.
“Once the system was installed, only minimal fine-tuning was needed. The SRX906 line arrays sound excellent straight out of the box, with consistent tonal quality throughout the space,” said Dave Bennett. “The Performance software was intuitive and accurate, everything just worked as it should in a real-world environment.”
The final installation also included improvements to the lighting control and a reorganisation of AV racks for greater clarity and usability. The venue facilities fully equipped to host a wide range of performances, both for the College and venue hire.

“The SRX906 installation was straightforward and hassle-free. It’s a fantastic little product that delivers impressive performance for its size.
“The SRX906 installation was straightforward and hassle-free. It’s a fantastic little product that delivers impressive performance for its size,” Dave Bennett added. “The rigging system is awesome! Quick to deploy, with precise angle adjustments and secure locking mechanisms that make it easy to achieve optimal coverage. JBL has clearly streamlined its line array portfolio, offering a consistent and intuitive rigging experience across the range. The flexibility and ease of assembling the system made the entire process painless.”
Leadership are impressed with their robust JBL SRX900 professional-grade sound system. Taieri College’s Performing Arts Centre is now fully equipped to host a diverse range of performances, from school productions to community events.
“Now we have something that not only benefits the College but will be a great asset for Dunedin as well,” enthused Lyndon Jones. “It’s a great venue with concert-quality sound – and it’s now available for hire!”
JBL SRX900 LINE ARRAY ENHANCES WORSHIP EXPERIENCE AT NEW ZEALAND CHINESE CHRISTIAN CHURCH, PROVIDING CLEAR, CONSISTENT SOUND THROUGHOUT.
The New Zealand Chinese Christian Church (NZCCC) in Auckland recently upgraded its sound system, opting for a JBL Professional SRX900 Series, moving away from traditional point-source speakers in favour of powered line array technology for more consistent audio coverage throughout the space.
“The auditorium and AV equipment were damaged during the Auckland floods. For this upgrade, our goal was to have improved sound quality and coverage throughout the space,” said Tommy Lam, Technical Coordinator at NZCCC. “After careful consultation and research, we decided that line array technology would provide the best solution to meet our needs.”
Recognising that clear, direct sound plays a vital role in worship and community gatherings, the team carefully evaluated their options to ensure the new system would elevate the overall experience for attendees.
“We found that the JBL SRX900 provided the best performance in our setting, delivering well-balanced sound from soft speech to louder music content.” Tommy explained. “The added value and support we received from local distributor JPRO helped solidify our decision to go with JBL. Thanks to proactive and effective communication with the team, we successfully integrated the AV installation into the construction phase, which helped shorten the overall timeline.”

The Solution
The system includes 8x JBL SRX906 dual 6.5-inch powered line array elements flown full-range in a left-right configuration, ensuring even sound distribution in the auditorium. Designing the system layout in JBL’s Venue Synthesis Software and utilising the intuitive SRX900 rigging hardware allowed for a straightforward installation experience by integrators Cable and Wireless, while the built-in DSP and amplification ensured optimal performance. System control and monitoring is achieved through the JBL Performance software application.
A Soundcraft Si Impact digital mixing console provides a flexible, user-friendly solution for mixing sound in the church. With onboard signal processing, the Si Impact is capable of handling everything from the spoken word to a full band, with future-proof capabilities for expansion.
“We found that the JBL SRX900 provided the best performance in our setting, delivering well-balanced sound from soft speech to louder music content.”

For on-stage sound monitoring, JBL PRX912 powered 12″ loudspeakers deliver high-quality audio, ensuring the musicians and vocalists can hear clearly. AKG microphones are integrated into the system through a Soundcraft MSB16i Mini Stagebox, which connects to the Si Impact console via a CAT5 cable.
Video source switching to projectors is managed by an AMX PR-0404 Precis matrix switcher, with video signal transport using AMX DXLINK transmitters, ensuring smooth and reliable video delivery.

“Thanks to proactive and effective communication with the JPRO team, we successfully integrated the AV installation into the construction phase, which helped shorten the overall timeline.”
The Impact
“We’re really pleased with our new AV system – the JBL SRX900 has been a game changer for us,” said Tommy Lam. “The clarity and consistency of sound has really enhanced the overall experience for our congregation. Church members have noticed a significant improvement in the sound and visuals”

To ensure crystal-clear sound across the gym, Crown CDi4300 four-channel installation amplifiers and JBL CSA240Z and CSA2120Z commercial zone amplifiers drive impactful and consistent audio to all JBL Professional loudspeakers.

“It is a fantastic sounding system that fills our space with high quality sound, complementing our high-end fitout.”
“This project has transformed the gym into a state-of-the-art environment that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of its members,” remarks Lee Dewerson. “By prioritising excellence in every detail, Fitness Cartel Manukau now delivers an inspiring and luxurious fitness experience. We would like to thank our audio product partner JPRO for their support in bringing this vision to life.”
“The equipment has performed exactly how we envisioned it would – reliably and consistently. It is a fantastic sounding system that fills our space with high quality sound, complementing our high-end fitout,” says gym owner Leo Kane. “The bass in the system carries well and compliments the speakers perfectly. Features we really like are that the sound levels can be managed from the back end and are reset each day, a microphone system that can work throughout the gym during events and the ability for our instructors to control their music and microphones with ease.”
VIVID EVENT PRODUCTION REDEFINES EVENTS WITH JBL SRX900, DELIVERING UNMATCHED SOUND, SCALABILITY AND FLEXIBILITY FOR UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCES AT ANY VENUE.
In the fast-paced world of event management, success often hinges on the ability to adapt, evolve and invest in cutting-edge technology. For VIVID Event Production, one of Tauranga’s fastest growing events and hire companies, this philosophy has been the driving force behind their journey, particularly with their recent investment of the JBL SRX900 powered line array series.
VIVID’s story goes back to the entrepreneurial spirit of owner Jaymz MacKenzie-Hooper. At just 17, while still in school, Jaymz started selling tickets to U18 alcohol-free dance parties. What started as a passion project soon transformed into a hire and events business and Jaymz slowly started purchasing equipment to support his growing venture.
Fast-forward ten years, and VIVID is now a full-service event production company with offices in four locations, offering professional DJ services, equipment hire and comprehensive event solutions. However, the sound system inventory had become a mismatched collection of various makes and models—many of them outdated.
Recognising the limitations of their existing equipment, VIVID made a strategic decision to invest in a versatile sound system capable of supporting everything from intimate gatherings to large-scale festivals.

“We needed a solution that was scalable, durable, and easy to deploy – plus it had to deliver exceptional sound quality from a reputable brand with reliable local support,” explains Jaymz.
“We wanted one system that could handle our 100-capacity shows and have the flexibility to provide full sound reinforcement to the 2500-capacity shows we were already doing – and future proof ourselves with the support of a supplier to keep growing and add more boxes as we need them.”
The Team at VIVID selected a full complement of JBL SRX900 series loudspeakers, opting for both the SRX906 6-inch and SRX910 10-inch line array elements, combined with the SRX918 single 18-inch and SRX928 dual 18-inch subwoofers. To maximise flexibility, they added the pole mount accessories and array frames, which could be flown or ground-stacked. This setup gave VIVID the versatility they needed, allowing the systems to be used for multiple smaller gigs or combined for larger deployments.
“We needed a solution that was scalable, durable, and easy to deploy – plus it had to deliver exceptional sound quality from a reputable brand with reliable local support”

Jaymz adds, “With the pole mount adapters we have run the SRX906s on stands for events of 100 people and by simply adding SRX918 subwoofers, we have catered to 400 people in smaller live music and corporate event venues. Having the ability to then use all the systems together with the help of the JBL VENUE Synthesis 3D acoustic simulation software, JBL SRX900 has been a game changer for us.”
The decision to invest in the JBL SRX900 line array system marked a pivotal moment for VIVID – one which has seen the company grow and take on a wider range of events. From intimate gatherings to sprawling festivals, the SRX900 seamlessly adapts to a myriad of venues and event types, delivering exceptional sound quality and coverage. Whether it’s the pulsating beats of The George FM Summer Tour or the high-energy vibe of Audiology’s Sunbelievable, the SRX900 consistently exceeds expectations, leaving audiences enthralled and event organisers delighted.

The decision to invest in the JBL SRX900 line array system marked a pivotal moment for VIVID – one which has seen the company grow and take on a wider range of events.
Since upgrading to the JBL SRX900 system, VIVID has enhanced its dry hire inventory with JBL Professional products, including the EON700 Series, PRX900 Series (widely used as DJ monitors), and the versatile EON ONE MK2 battery-powered column PA.
“VIVID now only supplies 100% JBL Professional audio across our range,” says Jaymz proudly. “We would like to thank JPRO and the wider team at JBL for their help and collaboration. The support, training and dedication to the brand has helped us achieve so much more. They have been amazing,” he acknowledged.
VIVID’s journey highlights the transformative power of innovation and strategic partnerships. With their investment in the JBL SRX900 line array system, they’ve not only enhanced their own capabilities but also reinforced their dedication to creating unforgettable experiences for clients and audiences alike.

HARMAN Professional Solutions, the global leader in audio, video, control, and lighting systems, announced two flyable subwoofer additions to its JBL Professional SRX900 Series of powered loudspeaker products. Included are 15-inch and 18-inch single woofer models that can be flown and configured with existing SRX900 line arrays and rigging accessories. The new subwoofers expand family versatility and are ideal for situations where floor space may be limited.
Drawing on flagship JBL Professional technologies, both subwoofers feature dual voice coil, Differential Drive woofers to deliver better heat dissipation, lower power compression, and wider dynamic range. A large low-frequency port design improves airflow and reduces audible turbulence. A reinforced 18 mm birch plywood cabinet ensures enhanced strength and durability. Both subwoofers feature the same amplifier module as the existing SRX900 subwoofers, offering a truly plug-and-play, powerful experience.
With an integrated three-point rigging system, JBL SRX915SF and SRX918SF Flyable Subwoofers can be easily deployed in both suspended and ground-stacked configurations, offering ultimate flexibility and high-performance sound wherever you need it.
In addition, a new range of accessories is being introduced, compatible with both the existing and new SRX900 products, expanding system configuration options and transportation capabilities. Models include new vertical transport carts for stacking and transporting up to three subwoofers and matching covers. A new simplified pole mount accessory offers a more cost-effective option for pole-mounting SRX906LA products.
Alongside the new hardware offerings, a series of new firmware and software updates expand system flexibility even further. A new version of the Performance application is being released, adding support for flown subwoofer arrays, a much-requested daylight mode, and the ability to store venue files onto the devices. A new version of Venue Synthesis is also being released, adding new and exciting features to the application. Among many other improvements, the update includes support for the new SRX900 flyable subwoofers, additional signal types for SPL mapping, new drawing tools, and expanded venue import format support, to name a few.

“A few years ago, the SRX900 Series was introduced to provide JBL Professional flagship touring performance and system integration into a modular system that can be scaled according to needs and budget. We are now expanding the line with our new flyable subwoofers, additional accessories, and key firmware and software updates,” said George Georgallis, Senior Director of Product Management, Tour Sound at HARMAN Professional Solutions. “We are committed to establishing SRX900 as the leader in this category and closely monitor market feedback to ensure we provide the appropriate solutions for our customers’ needs. This new phase of SRX900 reflects that commitment.”

THE INCLUSION OF THE JBL VTX A8 SERIES ALLOWS A GREATER LEVEL OF SCALABILITY, PROVIDING HIGH PERFORMANCE SOUND FOR SMALL TO LARGE EVENTS.
Strawberry Sound has become the latest audio visual production company in a growing list of New Zealand production companies to invest in a JBL VTX A Series line array system.
The upgrade emphasises the company’s continued commitment to excellence in audio, providing the best professional audio solutions to their customers.
Strawberry Sound provide full production services to top performers and promoters in the entertainment industry and celebrate 40 years in business this year. From concerts and festivals to award shows and gala dinners, the company has built a strong reputation for delivering outstanding audio visual experiences.
A proud JBL user since day one, Strawberry Sound continue to invest in cutting-edge technology to enhance its services. The addition of the JBL VTX A8 Series brings greater scalability and high-performance sound, ensuring every event—no matter the size—sounds its best.
One of the first events for their new system was the Miharo Central Lakes Polyfest in Queenstown, where the A8’s versatility was on full display. A ground-stacked system featuring six brand-new VTX A8 mid-highs and three B18 subwoofers per side was deployed, delivering outstanding results.
General Manager Mark O’Neill emphasised the importance of this upgrade, saying, “Adding the JBL VTX A8 Series to Strawberry Sound represents a significant step forward in our capabilities as a production company. The scalability of the system gives us the scope to deliver high-quality audio for a wide range of events and venues. The system can be split into several smaller systems for intimate gatherings or combined into a bigger system for large-scale productions, all while maintaining the versatility and reliability our clients have come to expect.”

The VTX A Series is designed to meet the demands of any event, providing well-engineered rigging, exceptional sound transparency and intuitive 3D acoustic simulation software using JBL Venue Synthesis.
“One of the standout features is its excellent sound clarity. The top end is incredibly smooth, with remarkable detail, ensuring that every note, word and sound is heard exactly as intended—without the harshness that some other systems may produce. Whether it’s a live performance, corporate event or outdoor festival, we’re proud to offer our clients the very best in professional audio solutions,” Mark O’Neill added.
Soon after the addition of their new A8 system, the Strawberry Team received JBL VTX training with Tim Robertson, JPRO’s JBL accredited VTX Trainer. The system is powered by two Crown VRACK touring amplifier racks, each equipped with three of the most advanced professional touring amplifiers: the 4-channel Crown i-Tech HD 4×3500. Each amplifier channel features comprehensive OMNIDRIVE HD™ processing, including the acclaimed LevelMAX™ Limiter Suite and support for linear phase FIR filters, as utilised in the latest JBL V5 loudspeaker tunings.
Configuration and control of the entire system is managed by the latest JBL Performance Manager and Line Array Calculator software, with the Array Link mobile companion app helping technicians deploy systems on-site.

“One of the standout features is its excellent sound clarity. The top end is incredibly smooth, with remarkable detail.”
