The concept for the room size was to put together an epic-sounding, small-format solution with minimal equipment that you can fit into a spare bedroom or smaller media room.
This isn’t just a demo room – it’s an acoustic showcase that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in a residential cinema environment. Our purpose-built cinema room was crafted to deliver an emotionally captivating experience that rivals some of the best commercial cinemas in the world.
Designing a cinematic experience of this calibre in a domestic-sized room presented a number of challenges. With limited space, careful acoustic treatment and speaker positioning were critical to achieving a wide and balanced soundstage. Left untreated, room nodes could have compromised bass response and created an inconsistent experience across the seating area.
To enhance the experience, we also needed a seamless control solution that would allow visitors to easily manage lighting, audio and video at the touch of a button – creating a truly immersive experience.
To bring our vision to life, we integrated a full JBL Synthesis system, designed specifically for the room’s dimensions and acoustic profile. The ability to recess all the speakers was a major advantage, helping us maximise floor space without compromising performance.
We engaged with THX Advanced Integrator Andy Jurgens of Beyond Audio NZ, who was instrumental in shaping the project. Using detailed room measurements, he developed an Integrated Acoustic Treatment (IAT) strategy to manage reflections, dampen external noise and create a sense of being in a larger space.
After implementing the acoustic solution, we fine-tuned the system using Dirac Live and Smaart measurement tools, resulting in precise time alignment and frequency response calibration that deliver a cinematic experience that is both sonically accurate and emotionally immersive.

Since opening the doors, feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Visitors frequently comment on the realism of the experience, describing the system’s bass response as “felt as much as heard,” with some mistaking the power for physical seat shakers.
“We’ve had clients sit through a demo and look under their chairs, convinced there were tactile transducers installed,” said Mark Homan, JPRO’s Technical Sales Manager. “That’s the level of realism we’ve achieved.”
The system is seamlessly controlled using the AMX Muse automation control platform, paired with a Varia touch panel, providing effortless management of the cinema’s systems and allowing users to control the entire experience with ease.

Harman Luxury Audio Group has announced that its new JBL DA Series distribution amplifiers are now available in New Zealand.
Designed to pair seamlessly with any JBL architectural loudspeaker or other residential loudspeakers, the DA850 (8-channel) and DA1650 (16-channel) deliver four and eight zones of audio respectively, in a compact 1U chassis. Both models offer bridgeable outputs to handle high-power demands.
Each channel of the DA850 and DA1650 delivers 50W into 8ohm loads and 110W into 4ohm loads. When bridged, the output increases to 185W into 8ohm loads.
The amplifiers also offer flexible audio routing: each zone can have its own independent audio source, or a single source can be shared across all zones via the global audio input. Zones sharing a common source can be expanded across multiple amplifiers using the global audio output.
The DA amplifiers come with three power mode control options – 12V trigger, audio-sensing inputs, and always on – and feature protection against overcurrent and thermal issues to prevent potential speaker damage. Additional features include local and bus inputs, as well as channel output level controls.

These programs, JBL Synthesis Certified System and Certified Elite System, certify a wide range of systems based on five JBL Synthesis system templates – ranging from small-scale, intimate rooms to large-scale, high-channel-count immersive cinemas. The programs certify that specific calibration services and processes are followed, in addition to acoustically proven tuning methods that ensure optimal in-room performance.

The JBL Synthesis Certified System program is tailored for simpler, less complex cinema setups, while JBL Synthesis Certified Elite is intended for more intricate systems, designed to accommodate challenging room acoustics and larger, more advanced configurations.
The program offers five certified JBL Synthesis system templates, ranging from a 5.1.2-channel system for small- to medium-sized media rooms to an expansive 11.4.10-channel system for large home theatres. Each template features specialised JBL Synthesis loudspeakers and electronics, as well as expert support in system design, layout and calibration.
Harman Luxury Audio has revealed that the Adeo Group in Lavis, Italy, was the first showroom to achieve the qualification standard and received certification as a JBL Synthesis Elite System. Their immersive cinema is used for prospective client demonstrations and dealer training events.
In the APAC region, Thanh Tung Audio in Hanoi successfully fulfilled the qualification requirements in 2022 and officially became the first theatre in the region to obtain certification as a JBL Synthesis Elite System.
In 2023, the first home theatre to meet the qualification criteria in New Zealand – and the entire Australasia region – earned recognition as a JBL Synthesis Certified System. This unique setup seamlessly transitions from a 7.2.2 home cinema to a 2.1 stereo monitoring system for use with a baby grand piano.
During 2024, JBL Synthesis distributor JPRO received recognition for its showroom, becoming the third cinema in the APAC region to fulfil the requirements, earning JBL Synthesis Certified System status.
