JBL PROFESSIONAL DELIVERS CONSISTENT, HIGH-PERFORMANCE AUDIO ACROSS EVERY SPACE AT HIWA

The University of Auckland has opened its new 26,000-square-metre state-of-the-art home for sport, recreation and student life – the Hiwa Recreation Centre. Located in the heart of the student precinct, it serves as both a wellness destination and a social hub for the University community.

The eight-floor centre features New Zealand’s largest gym fit-out, cardio zones, rooftop turf and running track, two sports halls, an aquatics hall, squash courts and a bouldering wall – offering something for everyone.

The original facility on Symonds Street, built in 1978 for a campus of 10,000 students, could no longer meet the needs of today’s 46,000 students and 5,000 staff. It had reached capacity and was limiting opportunities for recreation and wellbeing.

Following extensive consultation, the new Recreation Centre was designed to enrich campus life and foster lifelong wellbeing. Research shows that students who used the facility weekly achieved significantly better grades. With green rooftops for recreation and reflection, spaces that connect users to nature and one another and roof turf with sweeping views of Auckland and the harbour, the centre stands as a vibrant central hub for student life.

Hiwa’s scale and unique design meant that an audio system was needed that could deliver not only high-quality sound, but also flexibility and ease of use. AV integrator Connect NZ was selected for the audiovisual contract and worked in close partnership with the University of Auckland’s AV design team to deliver a seamless integrated solution.

JBL Professional loudspeakers were selected for their exceptional sound performance, long-term durability and versatility across diverse spaces. Systems were supplied and supported by JPRO, JBL’s New Zealand distributor, who worked with the project team to ensure the right solutions were delivered for each application. Engineered to withstand heat, humidity and outdoor exposure, JBL’s weather-resistant loudspeakers deliver clear, consistent audio throughout, from indoor fitness studios to rooftop training zones, enhancing every moment within the space.

“We’ve tried various brands over the years but always come back to JBL. Their loudspeakers are reliable and purpose-built, and the support we receive from distributor JPRO makes a project of this scale far simpler.”

A diverse mix of speakers were installed to meet the acoustic and environmental demands of each space, while maintaining consistent, high-quality audio across the entire facility. JBL AC28-95 loudspeakers and ASB6118 subwoofers feature prominently in high-energy zones such as the Group Fitness, Dance and Bike Studios, delivering detailed high-output sound with added low-end support. The compact form factor of the AC28-95s suits flexible and visually sensitive spaces, while the powerful ASB6118 subs enhance impact for music-led workouts. In Sports Halls 1 and 2 CBT 70J column arrays and AC28-95 loudspeakers respectively provide wide, even coverage for large, dynamic environments.

Weather-resistant solutions were key for challenging areas such as the Aquatic Hall, Rooftop and Outdoor Turf. JBL AWC82 all-weather loudspeakers and CBT 1000 column arrays with CBT 1000E low frequency extenders were deployed for their durability and consistent performance in high-humidity and open-air settings. CBT 70Js on the rooftop and around the running track ensure wide, controlled coverage, while Control 25-1 and SLP14-T on-wall speakers cater to more intimate zones like entrances and quiet areas. Pendant models such as the Control 65PT and 67PT blend seamlessly into the open ceilings of the weights rooms, offering impactful sound for every workout.

The entire audio system throughout the Recreation Centre is distributed via Dante and powered by Crown DCi DriveCore installation amplifiers. Designed for demanding, mission-critical environments, the DCi Series delivers clean sound and rock-solid reliability. To streamline installation, reduce cable runs and simplify ongoing system management, multiple equipment racks were installed across each level of the building.

“Every part of the building, from the rooftop turf to the sports halls, has clear reliable sound that really lifts the experience.”

The Impact

Throughout all applications, JBL Professional’s loudspeaker solutions help elevate the energy, clarity and versatility of the new facility.

“It’s exciting to see a project of this scale come to life and we’re really pleased with the overall outcome,” says Paul Edlin, Audio Designer and Sales Director at JPRO. “All the loudspeakers have performed as per the design modelling. All in all, this is a great upgrade for the Rec Centre.”

The University AV Design Team agrees: “We’ve tried various brands over the years but always come back to JBL. Their loudspeakers are reliable and purpose-built, and the support we receive from distributor JPRO makes a project of this scale far simpler. From system design and specification to final commissioning, Paul Edlin and his team are world-class.”

Keith Block, General Manager of Connect NZ, adds: “It’s been fantastic working with JPRO to deliver the audio system for Hiwa. Rolling out a solution for a facility of this size and complexity, easily one of the biggest gym fit-outs in the Southern Hemisphere, was a real challenge but also a great opportunity. Together we made sure every part of the building, from the rooftop turf to the sports halls, has clear reliable sound that really lifts the experience. It’s awesome to see how Hiwa is already making a difference on campus and in the wider community. We’re proud to have played a part in bringing this world-class facility to life.”

Aquatic Hall

High humidity and corrosive conditions made JBL’s AWC82 all-weather loudspeakers the ideal choice for the Aquatic Hall, delivering clear, consistent audio for music and announcements across the stainless steel pool, spa, sauna and dive well. CBT 1000 line array column speakers with CBT 1000E extenders are discreetly installed on either side of the large video wall, JBL’s Constant Beamwidth Technology providing even, powerful coverage from the pool to the Spectator Mezzanine and Pool Lounge, despite acoustically challenging environments.

Group Fitness, Body and Dance Studios

JBL’s compact AC28-95 loudspeakers, supported by ASB6118 subwoofers, deliver high-output, detailed audio for music-driven classes. Their unobtrusive design suits the flexible studio spaces, used for group sessions and individual workouts.

Sports Halls

Home to the Southern Hemisphere’s first full glass LED sports floor, Sports Hall 1 supports a range of activities on a single dynamic surface. JBL CBT 70J column loudspeakers are positioned for even coverage, reducing overall volume while delivering clear audio throughout the space.

In Sports Hall 2, JBL AC28-95 loudspeakers positioned in the ceiling plenum deliver high-output, clear audio across the timber-floored court. With pre-marked lines for basketball, volleyball, netball, futsal and badminton, the space is ready for a wide range of indoor sports.

Rooftop

JBL CBT 70J column loudspeakers, weather-rated for outdoor use, provide consistent coverage across the rooftop pitch that is used for football, hockey, tennis and more. Four speakers are mounted on each side, with additional CBT 70Js along the running track and Control 25-1 on-wall speakers at the entrance. The rooftop also includes seating and open space for study, relaxation and fitness.

Cardio Room

JBL Control 16CT ceiling loudspeakers deliver clear, high-quality audio throughout the cardio rooms, supporting a wide range of medium to high-intensity workouts.

Weights Room

JBL Control65PT and 67PT pendant loudspeakers provide clear, detailed audio throughout the expansive weights area. Blending seamlessly into the open ceiling, they deliver consistent coverage across zones for resistance training, dumbbell work and powerlifting.

Bike Studio

JBL AC28-95 loudspeakers with ASB6118 subwoofers, deliver powerful sound in an immersive set-up for a next-level cycling experience. Positioned on each side of an 8-metre curved screen with surrounds at the rear, the system enhances the energy and impact of each ride.

Quiet Zone and Chill-out Areas

JBL SLP14-T low-profile on-wall loudspeakers provide rich, detailed sound throughout the quieter spaces—ideal for relaxing, studying, or unwinding after a workout.

Outdoor Turf

Near the main entrance, CBT 1000 line array column speakers with CBT 1000E extenders are installed on either side of the large video wall, delivering impactful sound across the outdoor turf and landscaped artificial hills.

AUDIO UPGRADE AT BRUCE MASON CENTRE IN AUCKLAND ENHANCES SOUND EXPERIENCE WITH JBL VTX A6 SERIES LINE ARRAYS, BSS PROCESSORS AND CROWN AMPLIFIERS

The Bruce Mason Centre, operated by Auckland Live on behalf of Tataki Auckland Unlimited, has completed a significant audio upgrade with the installation of a JBL VTX A6 line array system.

Located in Takapuna on Auckland’s North Shore, the Bruce Mason Centre is one of the region’s premier venues for the performing arts, offering a diverse range of events.

With a seating capacity of over 1,100, it features tiered seating that can be reconfigured into an open-floor space for gala dinners or cocktail receptions, hosting everything from family entertainment and dance performances to live music and comedy shows.

Bruce Mason Theatre in Auckland New Zealand chooses JBL VTX A Series Line Array

After 20 years of operation, the theatre’s previous system was no longer sufficient to meet the demands of the venue’s evolving event schedule, prompting the decision to upgrade. After careful evaluation, a JBL VTX A6 system was chosen for its compact yet powerful format and flexible rigging system, which simplifies speaker repositioning due to the A Series’ industry-leading design.

The two-year upgrade, delivered by JPRO in consultation with the Auckland Live technical team, included installing new Crown I-Tech 43500HD amplifiers, under balcony fills and rewiring the entire system.

“Venue Synthesis 3D software is remarkably accurate compared to real-world performance, significantly streamlining live tuning and system commissioning.”

“The VTX rigging system delivers the flexibility and performance the venue needs for its varied event schedule.”

The upgraded system now includes two flown arrays, each consisting of 12 x VTX A6 dual 6-inch line array elements. Using JBL’s ArrayLink mobile app which integrates seamlessly with the Venue Synthesis 3D Acoustic Simulation software, JPRO developed six system presets to streamline deployment. With the combination of ArrayLink and the VTX A Series’ quick-rigging system, the arrays can be scaled, repositioned and ready to operate in under 30 minutes, depending on event requirements.

Twelve VTX B18 arrayable 18-inch subwoofers are deployed in a cardioid configuration and can be either flown or ground stacked. For under-balcony coverage, eight JBL AC18 high-performance compact loudspeakers are discreetly positioned. The system is powered by Crown I-Tech 43500HD amplifiers, with audio management handled by BSS BLU-806 networked signal processors.

“The VTX rigging system delivers the flexibility and performance the venue needs for its varied event schedule,” said Lindsay Clements from the Bruce Mason Centre technical team. “The sound is really clean and holds up beautifully across different instruments and sources.”

JBL PROFESSIONAL SYSTEM ENHANCES GUEST EXPERIENCE AT THE SEBEL WELLINGTON LOWER HUTT

Audio Workshop recently completed the installation of a cutting-edge HARMAN Professional multizone sound system at The Sebel Wellington Lower Hutt, a premium Accor hotel located along the scenic Hutt River.

The hotel offers a sophisticated and welcoming environment for its guests, and its stylish contemporary design demands an equally high-quality sound system capable of supporting a variety of settings, from ambient background music in public spaces to vibrant soundscapes in bars, restaurants and outdoor areas. Audio Workshop was engaged to develop and implement a solution that would deliver clear, high-quality audio across multiple zones while remaining unobtrusive and maintaining a relaxed atmosphere throughout the hotel.

Led by Matt Chapman, Audio Workshop selected a range of HARMAN Professional products to ensure premium sound quality, reliability and ease of operation. The system was designed to integrate seamlessly across five floors, with each area of the hotel benefiting from tailored audio delivery to suit its individual purpose.

Flexibility and ease of use was important, allowing hotel staff to manage the audio experience in every zone. Whether adjusting volume in the restaurant, selecting a different audio source for the lobby or fine-tuning sound levels in the outdoor spaces, the system provides intuitive and convenient control across the entire property.

Inside the lobby and reception areas, JBL Control 16CT ceiling loudspeakers were deployed to deliver clean, discreet audio, allowing ambient background music to gently shape the atmosphere without visually intruding on the space. This extended all the way to the lifts, providing guests with a seamless experience from the moment they step inside the building.

Control 16CT speakers in black were installed in the hotel’s bar and restaurant areas to match the interior design, while delivering clarity and warmth, helping to establish a pleasant audio backdrop for dining and socialising.

“The HARMAN Professional solution with JBL, Crown and BSS integrates seamlessly, which is why I specify it for so many projects.”

Outdoors where the Wellington climate can be less predictable, JBL Control 25-1 loudspeakers with WeatherMax grilles were selected. Covering the terraces and valet zones, their rugged build and weather-resistant design ensure guests enjoy the same high-quality sound outdoors as they do indoors.

Apart from the lift areas, all audio zones are powered by Crown CDi amplifiers. Designed to streamline installations, the CDi range has become a favourite among integrators because of their versatility, reliability and powerful onboard digital signal processing and networking capabilities, delivering strong performance at an attractive cost.

Loudspeaker management and control is handled by a BSS BLU-100 networked signal processor, ensuring reliable distribution across all zones. Its flexible open architecture and seamless integration allow the hotel to adjust settings for each area, such as control over source selection or volume levels, enabling staff to manage the system effortlessly.

To enhance usability, BSS Contrio EC-8BV Ethernet wall controllers were installed in key locations including reception and restaurant areas. These intuitive interfaces allow staff to adjust volume or switch audio sources with just a few taps, making day-to-day operation straightforward even for users with minimal technical experience.

The system went live smoothly, immediately transforming the hotel’s audio experience. Hotel management has since praised its ease of use, consistent sound quality and reliability.

Reflecting on the project, Matt Chapman explains: “The HARMAN Professional solution with JBL, Crown and BSS integrate seamlessly, which is why I specify it for so many projects. IT WAS A FULL JBL PROFESSIONAL DEPLOYMENT FOR JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR AT DUNEDIN’S HISTORIC REGENT THEATRE, WHERE TAIERI MUSICAL BROUGHT THE ICONIC ROCK OPERA TO LIFE FOR NEW ZEALAND AUDIENCES.

When Taieri Musical staged Jesus Christ Superstar at Dunedin’s Regent Theatre, it wasn’t just the award-winning cast and crew who delivered a showstopper. Behind the scenes, a full JBL Professional sound system powered the rock opera with clarity, impact and energy fit for one of New Zealand’s grandest stages.

The Regent Theatre, with its ornate baroque-revival interior and 1600 seats is a landmark in its own right. But for sound engineers, its scale and architecture present a serious challenge. How do you make sure every audience member from the front row to the circle under the balcony, hears every word and every note with the same intensity?

That task fell to the team from Strawberry who supplied the sound equipment, with system engineering led by Dave Bennet. “In a theatre like the Regent the challenge is covering all the seats while staying out of the sightlines,” Bennet explains. “You can’t just hang giant speaker arrays in front of the stage and those beautiful views. Instead we used a mix of flown and ground-stacked arrays, discreet under-balcony fills and a few spot fills for the tricky areas.”

The main left and right arrays consisted of three VTX B18 subs with four VTX A8s per side, ground-stacked neatly beneath the proscenium to avoid sightline issues. Additional hangs of four VTX A8s per side covered the circle, while a centre cluster of eight Vertec VT4886s was dedicated to vocals.

Six AC25s provided under-balcony vocal coverage, suspended discreetly from the circle’s front lighting rail, while SRX712s were called in for difficult pockets of coverage and as stage foldback. Everything ran from Crown I-Tech 4×3500 amplifiers, with JBL Performance Manager providing system control and tuning.

“Sound design for a rock musical like Jesus Christ Superstar comes with many challenges and trade-offs, but the JBL range makes it elegant.”

“Right from the outset we knew we had to use a distributed system. The VTX A8’s consistent acoustic performance across its 110-degree horizontal coverage helps a lot when you’re pushed into the corners and planning the fills in advance was key,” Bennet continues. “We had four different generations of loudspeakers managed under one platform showing how handy Performance Manager is. It’s been a great tool for deployment, tuning and monitoring.”

Sound designer and mixer Tom Acklin of Crossfade shaped the production’s audio night after night, balancing the rock band with the vocals that drive the story forward. For him, the JBL rig brought both power and finesse.

“Sound design for a rock musical like Jesus Christ Superstar comes with many challenges and trade-offs, but the JBL range makes it elegant,” Acklin says. “The VTX A8 handling the band content is the heart of the system. It ticks many boxes for me as a sound designer, full-range frequency response down to 60Hz, compact size to avoid those sightline issues and a wide 110-degree dispersion that’s perfect for this venue.”

“The JBL VTX A8 is an excellent choice for a musical show that needs big energy in a compact package.”

Acklin emphasises the mix of cabinets as a strength, ensuring every seat receives the same experience. “The VT4886 centre hang carries the vocals, if you’re under the balcony the AC25s are the real star. It’s all about making sure the story reaches everyone, no matter where they’re sitting.”

For a production as bold and timeless as Jesus Christ Superstar, sound is as central to the experience as the staging or choreography. Both Bennet and Acklin agree the Regent Theatre production demonstrated how well the JBL VTX A Series adapts to challenging live theatre environments.

“The key takeaway is that the A8s are at home in this kind of deployment,” Bennet concludes. “From their wide coverage to their impressive low-end output even in small numbers, they’re an excellent choice for a musical show that needs big energy in a compact package.”

AMX JETPACK AND JBL PROFESSIONAL PROVIDE OTAUA PRIMARY SCHOOL WITH HASSLE-FREE AV THAT JUST WORKS

Located in the scenic Waiuku countryside, Otaua Primary School is a vibrant rural institution providing a unique learning environment by integrating the natural landscape into their educational programs. The school hall plays an important role in hosting a range of activities for the school and community, from assemblies and performances to movie nights; however, its existing audio visual system had become unreliable and difficult for staff to manage.

Principal Anna Voyce recognised an opportunity to invest in a modern, seamless AV solution that would not only improve the sound and video quality but provide a professional, user-friendly experience for everyone involved.

The school contacted JPRO for advice and worked with Anna to design a system that ticked all the boxes for the teachers and importantly gave the kids that “wow” experience. JPRO then engaged the services of Dan Larsen owner of Alpha Sound to install and commission the system. With the AMX Jetpack AV switching and control kit as the core of the system, Jetpack delivered exactly what the school needed, providing simplified video transport and auto-switching between HDMI and USB-C, straightforward AV system controls and handy remote management features in a single kit that required no custom programming.

The Jetpack bundle includes a three-input wall plate transmitter installed at the technical desk in the hall, connected to the multi-function receiver tucked neatly away. The six-button keypad with volume control offered staff a simple interface to manage audio and video without needing a manual. No need to find the projector remote and figure out what input to use – the AMX Jetpack automatically does that for you.

To deliver clear and even sound throughout the hall, Dan installed JBL Control 25-1 loudspeakers along the walls. A JBL Control SB2210 subwoofer was discreetly positioned to deliver impactful bass, significantly enhancing musical performances and particularly appreciated during movie nights. Amplification is handled by Crown CDi2300 amplifiers, providing robust and reliable power with seamless integration into the PA system via built-in JBL presets.

“The AMX Jetpack gives you high-end performance without the high price, it was straightforward to install and has really made things simpler for the school.”

But perhaps the biggest win? Jetpack’s built-in scheduling capability, which automatically powers down the system when not in use – increasing the life of the projector, saving energy and sparing calls that the projector is still on during holiday periods or weekends.

“You guys make dreams come true; I no longer have anxiety about trying to get the system to work for an assembly or hitting ‘go’ on the laptop and sound system at the same time to try to get the video and audio to sync for the kid’s movie nights!” laughs Anna. “The AMX Jetpack system has simplified and enhanced our audio visual experience, it’s amazing.”

From install to operation, the project ticked every box.

But perhaps the biggest win? Jetpack’s built-in scheduling capability, which automatically powers down the system when not in use.

“The AMX Jetpack gives you high-end performance without the high price,” says Dan. “It was straightforward to install and has really made things simpler for the school. The response from everyone has been fantastic.”

The result is a future-ready hall that meets the school’s needs today and leaves room to grow tomorrow. For Otaua Primary, it’s simplified AV that just works the way it should.

TIMARU BASILICA UPGRADES SOUND WITH JBL CBT COLUMN ARRAYS

One of New Zealand’s most significant ecclesiastical landmarks, the Timaru Sacred Heart Basilica, has undergone a major audio upgrade, with a new JBL CBT column array sound system installed as part of a wider seismic strengthening and restoration project.

Located two hours south of Christchurch and under the Christchurch Diocese, the Timaru Basilica is a heritage Category 1 building. Designed by renowned architect Francis Petre, the structure stands as a celebrated example of Roman and Byzantine-influenced architecture, with touches of Art Nouveau design, and is considered one of South Canterbury’s most iconic historic sites.

The recent works aimed to ensure the safety and longevity of the landmark, with the sound system upgrade taking place alongside structural improvements to protect against future earthquakes.

Historically, the church’s challenging acoustics made effective sound reinforcement difficult. With its vast interior and highly reflective surfaces, previous solutions struggled to deliver intelligibility and coverage across the nave and transepts.

Local integration specialists Audio Dynamite were engaged to deliver a solution that would meet both acoustic and aesthetic requirements. Working closely with JBL distributor JPRO, the team designed a system built around JBL’s CBT (Constant Beamwidth Technology) column array loudspeakers.

“We needed a system that would deliver clarity and consistency without compromising the architectural beauty of the space,” explains Richard ‘Stix’ Howey, owner and sound engineer at Audio Dynamite Ltd. “Column arrays offered the perfect balance of performance and visual discretion.”

“We needed a system that would deliver clarity and consistency without compromising the architectural beauty of the space.”

The main reinforcement system comprises JBL CBT 1000 full-range column speakers with matching CBT 1000E bass extenders, mounted discreetly beside the Basilica’s front columns. These are supported by JBL CBT 50LA arrays used as fills to ensure seamless coverage across the listening areas while minimising energy directed at reflective surfaces.

Power and signal processing are handled by Crown CDi 41200BL and CDi 4300BL DriveCore installation amplifiers and a BSS BLU-100 networked processor.

A BSS EC-V-WHT wall controller provides local volume control, while wireless speech reinforcement is provided by AKG WMS470 systems.

JPRO provided system design assistance, working with Audio Dynamite to ensure even front-to-back coverage while avoiding excessive spill into non-audience areas—a critical factor in such a reverberant environment.

“Despite the acoustic challenges, the thoughtfully designed system delivered clear and consistent sound all the way to the standing congregation at the back.”

The upgrade was unveiled at a special Mass celebrating the completion of the restoration works, during which both the structural and audio improvements were blessed.

“I would like to thank JPRO for their invaluable assistance in designing and commissioning this system. The first Mass after the install was a full house,” says Howey.  “Despite the acoustic challenges, the thoughtfully designed system delivered clear and consistent sound all the way to the standing congregation at the back. The CBTs performed flawlessly.”

The result is a modern, reliable sound reinforcement system that respects the Basilica’s heritage status while dramatically improving the worship experience for clergy and congregation.

JBL CBT1000 LINE ARRAY COLUMN LOUDSPEAKERS PROVIDE RELIABLE, HIGH-POWERED COVERAGE FOR MULTIPURPOSE SCHOOL GYMNASIUM

Established in 1959, Onehunga High School has long been a cornerstone of its community. Nestled in Onehunga overlooking the picturesque Manukau Harbour in Auckland, the school’s deep roots are reflected in its strong sense of tradition and continuity, with many second and third-generation students passing through its halls. A legacy highlighting Onehunga High School’s commitment to providing lifelong learning opportunities for the local community.

Recognising the need to modernise its facilities to better equip students for the future, the school recently completed a major redevelopment, introducing several advanced facilities. Two new teaching blocks were built – one with a dual-basketball-court gymnasium, exercise room, locker rooms and teaching spaces, and the other dedicated to science and technology.

The school develops culture, character and interpersonal skills through encouragement, commitment, discipline and personal responsibility. This is done by actively engaging students in a diverse range of activities, including sports and performing arts. It was decided that the new gymnasium would be used as a multipurpose venue to cater for its various events and a key requirement to achieve its objectives would be a flexible, high-quality audio system that ensures clear, powerful sound and excellent coverage throughout the space.

JBL CBT1000 line array column speakers are designed to provide high performance sound in school multipurpose gymnasiums
The Solution

Trusted technology partner Connect NZ was called upon to design and install a high-definition LED wall and a high-performance audio system capable of meeting the multipurpose audio requirements for the school.

With the range of activities including sports, cultural events, music and performing arts, system designers selected JBL Professional CBT 1000 high-powered line array column loudspeakers with CBT 1000E low frequency extensions for the gymnasium.

JBL CBT 1000 is a high performance adjustable coverage line array column that is engineered to distribute more sound to the far area of a room allowing for optimal sound distribution and delivering consistent powerful audio throughout the space, ensuring even coverage from front to back.

With limited room for traditional subwoofers, system designers specified JBL CBT 1000E low-frequency extensions for their extended bass response down to 38Hz, providing enhanced sound control and increased output levels that allow the school to achieve a full, dynamic audio experience without compromising on space or performance.

The loudspeakers are powered by a Crown DriveCore CDi21200 amplifier. Designed to make installations easier, Crown CDi DriveCore amplifiers are equipped with speaker presets to fully maximise the capabilities of the CBT 1000 speakers. CDi amplifiers streamline ongoing maintenance and control with robust network management, advanced digital signal processing and a user-friendly front-panel interface with colour display. Energy efficiency is a cornerstone of the CDi range, thanks to GreenEdge Technology, which incorporates power-saving features and an auto-standby mode to reduce environmental impact and operational costs.

Because the multipurpose gymnasium would also be used for school assemblies and live music performances, reliable AKG wireless microphones were chosen along with an external RF Venue DFIN ‘diversity fin’ antenna for reliable RF reception throughout the space. The Diversity Series of antennas eliminate dropouts compared to traditional whip or paddle antennas by combining two antenna paddles into one (with two RF inputs), simplifying RF setup and reducing coax cable clutter.

“We needed a high-performance audio solution that is reliable and could cover long distances. The JPRO design along with the JBL CBT1000 line array column loudspeakers have enhanced the Onehunga High School gymnasium.”

System Features
  • CBT-1000 High Performance Adjustable Coverage Line Array Column that sends more sound toward the far area of a room to make front-to-back sound levels more consistent.
  • CBT-1000E Extension for CBT1000 provides extended bass response and pattern control and increased sound output levels for superior audio performance.
  • RF Venue Diversity Fin Distro4 Package includes Diversity Fin Antenna (DFIN) for Wireless Microphones, DISTRO4 Antenna Distribution System and relevant coaxial cables
  • AKG C555L wireless condenser headset mic
  • AKG DMS800 Dante enabled wireless microphone system
  • Bluetooth wallplate with Dante
  • Crown CDI21200 best performance-for-value amplifier with pre-loaded JBL speaker tunings to help make installations quicker and easier.

“What truly stands out is the CBT 1000’s consistent tone quality, whether at soft or loud levels and its ability to deliver clear audio in various performance settings in a large open space.”

The Impact

“We needed a high-performance audio solution that is reliable and could cover long distances. The JPRO design along with the JBL CBT1000 line array column loudspeakers have enhanced the Onehunga High School gymnasium,” says Rakesh Choudhary, Business Development Manager at Connect NZ.

“What truly stands out is the speaker’s consistent tone quality, whether at soft or loud levels and its ability to deliver clear audio in various performance settings in a large open space. Its IP55 marine-rated capabilities provide added peace of mind against humidity and dust, keeping the system reliable for all occasions. It’s been the perfect solution for the multipurpose requirements of the venue and we’re delighted with the results.”

JBL INTELLIVOX ENHANCES HERITAGE VENUE WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART AUDIO AT ST MATTHEW-IN-THE-CITY

Situated in the heart of Auckland, the historic Anglican church of St Matthew-in-the-City has recently undergone a discreet but powerful sound system upgrade, thanks to the installation of a JBL Intellivox column array system. The heritage-listed building, constructed in 1905, is renowned not only for its stunning Gothic Revival architecture but also as a sought-after venue for weddings and community gatherings.

The need for a new system was driven by the church’s evolving role as both a place of worship and a flexible event space. As such, the brief from both the caretakers and the project architects was clear: deliver outstanding voice reproduction for liturgical use, while ensuring speech clarity and coverage suitable for a broad range of public events – all without compromising the venue’s aesthetic integrity.

Integrator Alpha Sound was awarded the contract, working in close partnership with JBL distributor JPRO and Peter Reed, Senior Consultant at Salmond Reed Architects. Given the acoustic complexity of the space with its ornate architectural features and Category A Heritage Status, the team specified JBL’s Intellivox range for a solution that could deliver intelligibility and seamless coverage.

“The challenge was to ensure high speech intelligibility while respecting the visual heritage of the building,” said a JPRO spokesperson. “We modelled the space in 3D to understand the acoustic characteristics from different column loudspeakers and then determined what the STI values were.”

With the goal of achieving Speech Transmission Index (STI) values above 0.5 – and ideally closer to 0.6 – the design team focused on directing sound only where needed, minimising reflections from hard surfaces and avoiding coverage in non-audience areas. JBL Intellivox’s beam forming capabilities proved key to achieving those objectives.

“The sleek Intellivox-DSX280 HD powered column array loudspeaker, capable of providing a constant sound pressure level up to 35m, provides consistent full-range audio from the front of the nave to the rear.”

The sleek Intellivox DSX280 HD powered column array loudspeaker, capable of providing a constant sound pressure level up to 35m, provides consistent full-range audio from the front of the nave to the rear, with minimal intrusion on the church’s heritage interior. Intellivox DSX180 powered column arrays are used as fill systems in the North and South sides. With their slim profiles and custom paint finishes, the Intellivox systems blend discreetly into the surrounding stone columns.

Due to the venue’s multipurpose use, JBL PRX815XLFW 15-inch subwoofers were added to provide additional bass reinforcement for music applications. JBL CBT 50LA column arrays, powered by a Crown CDi4300 amplifier, were deployed to deliver consistent sound coverage from front to back in the mezzanine level.

An AKG CGN gooseneck microphone was selected for the lectern, while AKG C214 large-diaphragm condenser microphones were used to capture the Bell Tower and Cathedral Organ with pristine clarity. These additions have dramatically enhanced the overall worship experience for those attending services at St Matthew-in-the-City.

“The JBL Intellivox speakers blend seamlessly into our space and the audio quality is quite astounding.”

“The outcome of the loudspeaker upgrade is remarkable,” said Dmitry Rusakov, Events Manager at St Matthew-in-the-City. “They blend seamlessly into our space and the audio quality is quite astounding. It is so clear from the front of the venue to the back, without sounding echoey.”

To mark the completion of the project, staff from JPRO and Alpha Sound were invited to a special dedication ceremony hosted by the church. The event offered clergy, congregation and the wider community a chance to experience the new system firsthand and to acknowledge the technical precision and care invested in the project.

The completed installation at St Matthew-in-the-City demonstrates how the advanced loudspeaker technology in JBL Intellivox can meet the complex demands of heritage spaces. With careful system design and integration, the church has gained a high-quality audio solution that supports its dual role as a place of worship and a community venue—without compromising its architectural character.

BSS DIGITAL SIGNAL PROCESSORS AND CROWN AUDIO CDI AMPLIFIERS POWER THE ALL BLACKS EXPERIENCE TO A STATE-OF-THE-ART, IMMERSIVE, INTERACTIVE SHOWCASE

The latest jewel in the crown of Auckland’s tourism sector in the heart of the entertainment precinct, is a fully interactive, immersive experience, drawing the visitor into the world of the All Blacks.

The Opportunity

The All Blacks Experience allows visitors a unique opportunity to be immersed in the world of the All Blacks and Teams in Black and to discover more about their culture, legacy of success and connections with New Zealand.

A priority was to create a highly engaging experience for visitors. The visitor is immersed in this latest experience that steps through the process of what it takes to make, shape and be an All Black. Five interactive zones provide the opportunity for a visitor to face the full force of the haka, to prove their rugby knowledge, as well as getting hands-on in the skills area by testing their kicking, lineout and agility skills against some of the greatest All Blacks and Black Ferns – and each other.

Wellington-based company Toulouse were engaged to work alongside the project team at Workshop E to design, specify and install immersive AV, lighting and audio technology into this new experience.

Toulouse specialise in providing creative design and technical solutions for the visitor experience and arts presentation sectors. The company collaborates with key players in this space to provide some of the best experience-based storytelling, both within the country and internationally.

Crown CDi Audio Amplifiers Power the All Blacks Experience
The Solution

The end-to-end audio architecture for the All Blacks Experience is delivered on a variety of hardware – Crown CDI Drivecore installation amplifiers, AVoIP audio decoders, a mixture of PC’s and Brightsign media players for source. There are three sets of 5.1 audio spaces within the experience.

Due to the unique audio requirements of each zone, Crown CDI4300BL, CDI4600BL and CDI41200BL amplifiers were selected. Crown CDi installation amplifiers feature Crown DriveCore technology, ensuring consistent power output and a range of input options. Designed for energy efficiency, these amplifiers also provide versatile networked audio capabilities and the inclusion of a BLU link digital audio bus to facilitate high-speed, high-bandwidth integration with BSS networks.

In each zone across the experience, the multi-channel (5.1) audio is delivered via an HDMI cable from a Brightsign media player to the AVoIP audio decoder. The six discrete channels of audio are then delivered into the BSS BLU-806 digital network for distribution to each of the Crown CDI amplifier channels.

The BSS BLU806 digital signal processor made this complex system possible with its BLU link and Dante connectivity. With configurable architecture and intuitive drag-and-drop design, it features a low-latency 256-channel audio bus, combining high bandwidth and power with user-friendly design for efficient and reliable audio distribution.

All other audio is again delivered by the Brightsign media players in a mix of mono and stereo sources, outputted into the BSS BLU network. The BSS BLU network then delivers the audio to a range of spaces within the site via a series of Crown CDI BLU enabled amplifiers.

“The Crown CDI range of amplifiers offered the project the best value for the integrated audio network features and the most versatility utilising both the BSS BLU network and Dante audio together within one architecture.”

Powerful high fidelity audio with accurate audio reproduction is critical for the All Blacks experience and only achieved by Crown by Harman audio amplifiers

The key challenge was the complexity of the experience and the range of requirements – from a bone rattling haka performance to an intimate ‘locker room’ conversation. Toulouse installed 160 loudspeakers and 138 channels of audio amplification across this experience. Some amplification was located in the field, whilst other zones of the experience were rack mounted and integrated into the audio network.

Each zone within the experience had uniquely different audio and architectural requirements – to address this the amplifiers and loudspeakers were matched to the composers and designer’s wishes. Extensive testing was undertaken in the Toulouse Wellington workshop with sample source audio provided ahead of the installation in order to achieve this. Creative leads were engaged with the tweaking process to ensure the clarity and depth of the audio experience matched the vision.

Some design elements added complexity to the functionality of the audio design. The ‘Haka Room’ – where the audience are face to face with larger-than-life All Blacks projected on a four-metre-high screen performing the haka Ka Mate Ka Mate – called for a subsonic boom, amplifying and replicating the power of being in front of the All Blacks as they perform the haka on the pitch.

Loudspeakers were carefully selected and deployed to achieve this truly immersive and powerful effect. Amplification within the Haka zone is through a series of Crown CDI41200BL amplifiers delivering 1200 Watts to the centre, left, right and surround speakers, with bridged 2x 1200W to each of the subwoofer enclosures.  For the loudest portions of the soundtrack, the amplifiers are maxed out on the fronts and subs – there is considerable audio being delivered into the small space, allowing the visitor to be fully surrounded in this audio experience.

Exceptional high fidelity audio and control at the All Blacks experience achieved by Crown, JBL and BSS
Immersive sound and a premium audio experienced made possible by JBL, Crown and BSS by Harman AVC products distributed by JPRO in NZ

“The finished product creates an immersive and highly emotive soundscape, delivered with crystal clear sound and high fidelity.”

The Impact

“The Crown CDI range of amplifiers offered the project the best value for the integrated audio network features and the most versatility utilising both the BSS BLU network and Dante audio together within one architecture,” says Marc Simpson of Toulouse. “The audio power and reproduction from Crown enhanced the loudspeaker performance which were also ultimately selected with value and audio performance as key drivers.

“The networking capabilities of these products afforded the Toulouse team a high degree of flexibility and responsiveness during the installation process – creative decisions were made in-situ and Toulouse needed to match the client requirements with the technical capacity within a short time frame.”

The effectiveness of the specific product and the overall impact was noted by the client:

Phil McGowan, General Manager All Blacks Experience said: “Toulouse are a trusted critical partner for us at the All Blacks Experience and their work on the delivery of audio content within the experience has been exceptional.  The finished product creates an immersive and highly emotive soundscape, delivered with crystal clear sound and high fidelity, which allows our visitors to not only hear the amazing soundtrack, but to feel it too!”

“The mighty Ka Mate haka from the All Blacks literally shakes our visitors to the bone – this kind of sound isn’t possible without reliable, professional audio equipment and a highly engaged, experienced technology partner like Toulouse who can bring their years of experience to bear to ensure the technology used is specified, installed and cared for correctly.”

To enhance the visitor experience at the BMW showroom in the iconic Nürburgring motorsports complex recently installed a suite of powerful HARMAN Professional audio visual solutions.

The Opportunity

BMW and HARMAN have enjoyed a close working relationship for almost 30 years. Harman Kardon speakers deliver immersive and high-fidelity audio on the road to millions of BMW sedan and SUV owners, making HARMAN’s technology as much a part of the BMW experience as the finely-tuned engines and German craftsmanship. For its 480-square meter showroom at the legendary Nürburgring Formula 1 motorsports complex, BMW wanted a versatile and easy-to-use audio-visual system with wireless control to ensure an unforgettable experience for every visitor. To meet these requirements, BMW and C-Line deployed a comprehensive selection of AMX, JBL Professional and Crown solutions.

“We wanted to deliver a perfect sound and video system, but we had to meet a really tight deadline,” said Thomas Langenegger, Project Manager, BMW M. “Complicating matters, we had to use the venue for different exhibits, each with their own audio-visual needs.”

BMW’s primary goal for the showroom’s system was to deliver audio and video content throughout the facility with ease and efficiency. AMX SVSI 2300 Series AVoIP encoders and decoders provide the needed processing power and user-friendliness, allowing staff to display signage, presentations, and race day video feeds at the touch of a button. AMX Modero touch panels allow users to control the displays on any of the nine video walls throughout the space and select live TV, Nürburgring TV or auxiliary inputs for presenters to showcase their own content. AMX Touch Panel Control apps give users the same level of control from wireless tablets and smartphones.

“Since the beginning of the project, we knew that we would install a reliable and rock-solid control system combined with SVSI networked AV from AMX,” said Christian Kraus, Account Manager, C-Line Mediensysteme. “AMX is our manufacturer of choice and we have done many successful installations over the years using their solutions.”

“We wanted to deliver a perfect sound and video system… using the venue for different exhibits, each with their own audio-visual needs.”

The Solution

To accommodate the showroom’s limited size, C-Line selected JBL AC28/26 two-way loudspeakers and ASB6115 subwoofers for wide coverage and detailed sound while taking up minimal space. Because the showroom also has the ability to be divided into three separate audio zones divided by acoustic curtains, C-Line deployed JBL AWC82 and Control 67 P/T loudspeakers to provide distinct, independent audio in each area when needed. Crown CDi 4|600 and CDi 2|300 networked amplifiers, featuring easy monitoring and extensive control options, allow staff to program and adjust extremely low-latency audio throughout the facility. Langenegger reported overwhelmingly positive responses to the showroom’s audio and video components from visitors thus far, recognizing HARMAN and C-Line for their expertise and collaboration.

“HARMAN and BMW have a long partnership because their equipment works and their products are excellent. It met, if not exceeded, our requirements.”

System Features
The Impact

“BMW is a hugely design-oriented company, so we wanted speakers that would be both sleek and unobtrusive,” added Langenegger. “The JBL speakers fit the bill, and the whole system works perfectly. HARMAN and BMW have a long partnership because their equipment works and their products are excellent. We didn’t have to think too hard about partnering with HARMAN, and in the end, we chose the best system for our needs. It met, if not exceeded, our requirements.”

VERSATILE JBL VTX A8 LINE ARRAY PROVIDES FLEXIBILITY AND EASE OF RIGGING OPTIONS

New 3,500-capacity Swansea Arena forms a central part of the Copr Bay regeneration programme in the Welsh city—the crowning jewel within a 1.1-acre coastal park.

The Swansea Arena is the latest of Ambassador Theatre Group’s (ATG) 58 operator run venues. It has been equipped with a versatile JBL VTX A8 line array system, installed by Glantre Engineering following a competitive tender issued by main contractors, Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd. Consultant on the project was Neill Woodger Acoustics and Theatre Design. Glantre’s contract as system integrator was a turnkey, covering rigging, drapes, full AV (including IPTV) and lighting, as well as the audio component—not only in the main event rooms but also the meeting rooms.

However, the recommendation for JBL’s compact line array had come from ATG’s Head of Technical Operations, Stuart Graham, who had been involved in the project from the outset four years ago. “We were able to have some influence on the design and I was able to shape the technical requirement.”

He noted the transition to JBL after another premium system had originally been specified.  “What had been proposed was a ‘safe’, medium sized system typically found in a theatre.

“But I wanted to challenge it [with this installation], I just didn’t want to keep going down the same route. This was our first UK arena and I thought we should reach and test new products. “There was a more ample budget available for the system’s design and implementation, and we wanted to focus on the scalability of the system and that it would work within every conceivable application. With that in mind, we opted for something tailored very much towards versatility and broader functionality.”

JBL VTX A8 Theatre choice for flexibility in multipurpose space, with a modular auditorium hosting a wide range of events from theatre productions, comedy, conferences and exhibition, some simultaneously

At the same time Stuart Graham was mindful that the venue had been designed not only as a multipurpose space, but with a modular auditorium, that would host a wide range of events—from theatre productions, comedy, conferences and exhibitions—some of them simultaneously. He envisaged it more than a place for different production companies to plug into, and worked closely alongside Neill Woodger to fulfil this.

It had been Woodger who had first directed Graham to Eastbourne’s Congress Theatre in order to demo the VTX A8, a venue where he and fellow consultant Sam Wise had overseen the successful JBL sound system installation in 2019.  He had wanted to hear the system not only with Swansea in mind but also other venues requiring a comprehensive system.

Stuart Graham’s verdict on first hearing the system was unequivocal. “I absolutely loved the sound of the A8 and B18 sub, and was blown away by the quality of the box. They had much more grunt and as for the usability of the system … it was easy to put up and take down.”

Graham subsequently heard the system again on the touring version of Carole King’s Beautiful, before auditioning it thoroughly at the HQ of British and Ireland distributors, Sound Technology Ltd., in Hertfordshire. But he said it was hearing the system again on Beautiful—the Carole King Musical “that signed, sealed and delivered the deal.”

Neill Woodger was happy to sign-off on the JBL solution given the technical proposals supplied and his previous experience with JBL at Congress Theatre.

“I didn’t want to keep using the same ‘safe’ medium sized line array specifications originally proposed and typically found in a theatre. I had heard the JBL VTX A8 and wanted to specify it.”

I absolutely loved the sound of the JBL VTX A8 and B18 sub and was blown away by the quality of the box. They had much more grunt and as for the usability of the system … it was easy to put up and take down.

In total 38 JBL VTX A8 have been rigged in their own flying frames at the Arena.

The set-up needed to be flexible as, thanks to a partition wall which closes the balcony, multiple events can be hosted simultaneously; for example, a banquet for 750 on the auditorium floor can be complemented by a seminar ongoing within the Circle, with no risk of interference or distraction. It was vital therefore that the sound system needed to be quicky reconfigurable and effective across the board.

The standard ‘full arena’ set-up is therefore two hangs each comprising 12 x A8 and 6 x B18 subs in cardioid configuration forming a conventional pros arch system. An additional 6 x B18 subs are available for ground-stacking as required. Two delay hangs each comprise of 5 x VTX A8 and 1 x VTX B18, plus four further VTX A8 as front fills, and a VTX M20 stage monitor package.

Powering the system are 15 Crown 4x3500HD amplifiers, while routing and processing is via BSS Soundweb BLU-806 and BLU-100.

The room can then be configured into conference mode, when the front rake goes in and the box angles change and reduce to eight a side; extra enclosures are then added to the delay arrays which are lowered and angled up slightly when the acoustic partition drops to divide the hall.

Matt Watt, Head of Sound Technology’s Application Team worked with ATG and Glantre on the design proposal and acoustic modelling.

“We modelled several alternative solutions before settling on the flexible A8 design.” commented Matt. “We were limited by the curtain as to where the speakers could be positioned, and the system still needed to work as delay for front of house and as the independent conference system. A8’s ease of rigging makes the reconfiguration of these areas possible as it’s so quick and easy!”

Glantre set up and optimised the entire system using JBL LAC (Line Array Calculator) and Performance Manager software, with BSS and amp config, working closely with Matt and Danny at Sound Technology’s Applications team, who were responsible for final commissioning. Glantre’s project manager and senior engineer, Tim Davies, explained, “There are a number of operating modes, both standing and seating and set up various presets as a base, with three or four different configurations.

“Essentially it’s a converged network and runs on the IT hardware, apart from the lighting.”

JBL VTX A8 line array for Swansea and now the consultants choice for medium format sound systems
This was our first UK arena and I thought we should reach and test new products. What had been proposed was a ‘safe’, medium sized system typically found in a theatre. When I heard the medium format JBL VTX A8 line array again on Beautiful—the Carole King Musical I knew this was the system to use – I was blown away by the quality of the box.

“A8’s ease of rigging makes the reconfiguration of these listening areas possible as it’s so quick and easy!”

In addition, Glantre dipped further into the Harman portfolio, specifying AMX video switchers to manage conference events and video distribution for 4K capability projection, as well as touch screen control in other areas, including the VIP lounge.

Keith Powles Technical and Building Manager of Swansea Arena, also added favourable comment. “Now that the arena is fully operational, I have had many different opportunities to use the system in various setups and configurations within the space

“The first thing that was apparent when using the system was just how flexible and intuitive it was for the user to set up, in a broad range of different scenarios—everything from conference, comedy all the way to large scale music events.

“Sonically the system has completely blown me away. The overall quality is outstanding and a particularly surprising element for me was just how well this system performs with spoken word style performances. The clarity and precision of vocals through the system is by far one of the best I have ever used. The system alongside the venue itself seems to be a perfect combination.“

In conclusion, Stuart Graham has no doubts about the wisdom of his preference for the JBL rig, particularly noting the speed of speaker reconfiguration during fast moving event changeovers. “JBL has a rich history and I know this was the right time and place for us to make a shift over to the brand. Longer term, once the reputation of the system comes more into play, we want to be able to offer the system competitively to certain size productions who don’t need all the investment of bringing equipment in.”

HARMAN PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS KEY TO FLEXIBLE AND RELIABLE JBL PERFORMANCE AUDIO SYSTEM

Massey University’s heritage listed Sir Geoffrey Peren Building, recently underwent a massive renovation which has brought back to life many of the building’s original features and provided seismic strengthening. The NZ Institute of Architects Heritage Award winning multipurpose venue features the Central Auditorium, a key space which has been restored to its original elegant form and now a grand function room filled with natural light and is an ideal space for events.

The University specified an audio system that would predominantly be used for speech, with occasional musical performance. The system not only had to be versatile but easy to use, meet the aesthetic requirements in keeping with the elegant building status and of come within budget.

ML Consultants were appointed to supply and install a world class sound system and worked with JPRO’s audio team to design a system that would cover all of the customer requirements.

A Soundweb BSS BLU-100 audio processor with BSS Contrio Ethernet EC-8BV wall controller was installed to control the conference events, with the wall controller also controlling the functioning of the projector. The system processor was programmed and commissioned by ProVision Technologies.

Callum from Provision says, “The BSS Soundweb range of processors offer great value for money, and high reliability. When I install BSS Audio in a venue I know it will give many years of trouble free service. This is backed up by the great service of the team at JPRO.”

AKG WMS470 cost-effective handheld and presenter diversity wireless microphone systems were supplied. The WMS470 systems provide excellent value and professional reliability, with the ability to group operating frequencies and minimise external interference. The Presenter systems come complete with a headset and lapel microphone allowing the customer an option to choose their preferred microphone type.

“The BSS Soundweb range of processors offer great value for money, and high reliability. When I install a Soundweb in a venue I know it will give many years of trouble free service.”

Two JBL CBT-70J column array speakers and CBT70-JE extension speakers were installed for FOH with JBL Control25AV speakers installed for delays and balcony speakers. As JBL CBT column arrays are designed to perform without additional audio signal processing, Crown XTi series amplifiers power the loudspeakers.

JPRO’s audio designer comments “The ease model showed less than 3dB variation of volume throughout the venue for speech. This model was backed up once installed as the sound throughout the venue is extremely consistent at every listening position. It is what I like to call a good day at the office!”

For musical performances, two JBL PRX715XLF powered subwoofers were installed for when extra Low Frequencies are required.

“The Soundcraft digital consoles are the easiest to use digital consoles on the market; this is perfect for a venue where the console could be used by multiple users with varying levels of ability”

A Soundcraft Si Impact digital mixing console was selected for its simplicity. The Si Impact offers the unique FaderGlow system for an easy-to-follow workflow. “The Soundcraft digital consoles are the easiest to use digital consoles on the market,” says JPRO. “This is perfect for a venue where the console could be used by multiple users with varying levels of ability”.

To make set up easy for the venue technician a BSSBLU-SI card was installed into the console. This provides flexibility for when a production is performed in the venue and the Si-Impact is in use, the system can be switched over to the local inputs at the console. Further expandability is achieved with a Madi Controlled MSB-16 Channel Digital Stagebox, mounted in the Auditorium next to the stage area and run via CAT5.

“We are incredibly pleased with the audio system that has been expertly installed in the Sir Geoffrey Peren Building,” says a spokesperson for Massey University. “The audio fidelity is quite impressive – we are able to hear all around the room and balcony without the sound being too loud.”

HARMAN PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS KEY TO NEW ZEALAND’S MODERN FLEXIBLE LEARNING SPACES.

Situated in the picturesque New Zealand town of Queenstown and near to its famous outdoor sporting and tourist locations, the newly built Wakatipu High School has breathtaking views of the Remarkables mountain range and Southern Alps.

Wakatipu High is one of several Kiwi schools that are embracing OECD Innovative Learning Environment principles, with flexible learning spaces and open plan learning environments, all of which encourage collaborative educational methods. The way teachers and learners engage with each other has changed significantly, which has led to changes in the way schools are designed. As a result, many new school building projects are designed with this method in mind, while older schools are being renovated to accomplish the same philosophy.

Built in a public-private partnership, the relocated state-of-the-art school was built to designing quality learning spaces (DQLS) guidelines, ensuring good lighting, acoustics and ventilation, and to meet a high standard of technology. Wakatipu has a strong focus on arts, indoor and outdoor sports and boasts facilities like a performing arts theatre, gymnasium, a café, aerobics room, dance and music recording studio.

The high technology requirement meant partnering with experts in audio and visual system integration. Leading AV integration company Strawberry Sound provided a HARMAN Professional school integration solution. JPRO NZ, one of New Zealand’s foremost specialists in Sound System design and supplier of HARMAN Professional audio equipment, was called upon because of their audio and product knowledge base, extensive support and ability to provide a unique approach to AV solutions.
The school’s intercom paging system and the sound systems for the gymnasium and auditorium run over fibre ties with Dante distribution between zones, providing a Layer 3 backbone. Audio processing is done with the open architecture platform BSS Soundweb Audio Architect. This design element creates a completely customisable platform for the end-client with an audio and paging system tailored specifically for their needs.

“Due to the open architecture platform, we can add customised panel settings via iPad for the paging system if required”

Future proofing was taken into consideration with the paging and PABX system that has been programmed to offer an all-page or individual-page zones. “Due to the open architecture platform, we can add customised panel settings via iPad for the paging system if required” adds Reuben Pearce of Strawberry. “The PABX has the ability to dial into the BSS BLU-103 if needed, and page school-wide through the headset.”

Audio processing and distribution is done primarily with BSS BLU-103 and BLU-100 signal processors and audio distributed throughout the school with JBL Control series and JBL CSS8006BM commercial series speakers.

“We encountered a challenge ensuring the Dante clocks synced over Layer 3,” comments JPRO NZ’s technical specialists when talking about the audio distribution via Dante. “This was ultimately achieved with the BSS BLU-DAN that adds Dante to the BSS network and has proven to be extremely solid and reliable.”

The music, dance and drama suites are purposeful, with three soundproof rooms available. A music recording studio and dance studio overlook the impressive cultural and performing arts auditorium that features a solid sound reinforcement system with JBL SRX812P powered 12” loudspeakers flown in a left-centre-right configuration. JBL SRX818SP subwoofers are flown using a customised rigging frame and take care of the lower bass frequencies.

“We are extremely satisfied with the way the SRX series is able to handle varying content, providing consistent and even distribution in the room,” adds Ryan Dougherty from Strawberry Sound. Audio is kept within the digital domain with a Soundcraft Si Impact Digital Mixer at FOH, MSB-16i Digital Stage Box with time-alignment and processing via BSS BLU-100.

“Good quality speakers mean better coverage at a lower volume, often with less speakers due to the efficiency of its coverage in a professional audio design. This in turn has a positive impact on teachers and pupils as they are not mentally fatigued due to poor sound and acoustics.”

With school’s embracing technology from an educational perspective, the importance of using good quality audio visual equipment and loudspeakers is critical. “Good quality speakers mean better coverage at a lower volume, often with less speakers due to the efficiency of its coverage in a professional audio design” says JPRO’s audio experts. “This in turn has a positive impact on teachers and pupils as they are not mentally fatigued due to poor sound and acoustics.”

Building project manager Blair Grier says that Wakatipu High has the best acoustic system he has installed in his 28 years in the industry.

When asked what some of his favourite features of the school were, principal Steve Hall says “The Arts Department with its new dance rehearsal rooms and a recording studio – and the Arts Theatre that can seat up to 600 people, which would be used ‘heaps’!”

HARMAN PROFESSIONAL SOLUTIONS KEY TO NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT TECHNICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

The Opportunity

The Christchurch Justice and Emergency Services Precinct was the first major government building to be built in Christchurch after a series of devastating earthquakes destroyed the city centre in 2011.

Completed in late 2017, the Precinct was purpose-built with an emphasis on collaboration, bringing together all regional justice and emergency services. The precinct is home to the Ministry of Justice, New Zealand Police, Department of Corrections, St John Ambulance, Fire and Emergency, Civil Defence and Emergency Management services. The Justice Building houses 19 courtrooms and associated court and legal functions.
