Why choose JBL Professional speakers over consumer speakers for schools, churches and wedding or sports venues?

When a school, church or venue is investing in sound, it’s tempting to compare professional speakers with what looks similar in a retail store. They may look alike, but they are designed for very different jobs.

Here’s why JBL Professional speakers are the best choice for education and performance spaces.

Built to last – and backed to do so

JBL Professional speakers are designed for daily use in real venues — assemblies, performances, sports events and presentations. They are built with stronger components, better heat management and robust cabinets that can handle years of use.

Just as importantly, JBL Professional systems come with a professional 7 year manufacturer warranty, designed for commercial and educational environments. Consumer speakers are typically warrantied for home use only, which can leave schools exposed if something fails.

Sound that reaches the back of the room

One of the biggest differences is throw distance — how far the sound travels clearly.

Consumer speakers are designed for living rooms. They sound fine up close, but quickly lose clarity as distance increases. JBL Professional speakers are engineered to project sound evenly across large spaces, so students at the back of the hall hear the same clear speech as those in the front.

This means:

  • Clearer assemblies/meetings/ceremonies
  • Better speech intelligibility
  • More consistent sound across the room

No need to turn the system up uncomfortably loud just to reach the back row.

Fit for Purpose

The design philosophy is very different.

Consumer speakers are made for short listening distances and casual use. JBL Professional systems are designed for rooms full of people, where clear speech, audio coverage of the whole area and reliability matter more than flashy features.

Professional systems focus on:

  • Clear voice reproduction for announcements and teaching
  • Even coverage so everyone hears the same message
  • Reliable operation for staff who just need it to work

A smarter long-term investment

While consumer speakers can appear cheaper upfront, they are rarely designed to meet the demands of a school or venue. Professional systems last longer, perform better in larger spaces, and are supported properly if something goes wrong.

At JPRO, we help schools choose systems that are fit for purpose — not over-engineered, not underpowered, just right for the space and the people using it.

BEHIND THE ROUND DOORS: HOW INVISIBLE LIGHTING AND AV DESIGN BROUGHT HOBBITON’S HOBBIT HOLES TO LIFE

When visitors step from their tourist coaches onto the rolling hills of Hobbiton in Matamata, New Zealand, they enter a land that has lived in the collective imagination of millions since J.R.R. Tolkien first described The Shire.

Originally a temporary film set for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, this section of the Alexander sheep farm was rebuilt for The Hobbit trilogy before becoming a permanent tourist attraction in 2012. Thousands of visitors each day stroll along its winding paths, imagining what lies on the other side of the round doors of the 40-plus Hobbit holes tucked into the folds of the sloping landscape.

For years, there was nothing on the other side, the iconic doors mere movie-set façades. Then, in April 2023, Owner Russell Alexander, Hobbiton CEO Shayne Forrest, Project Lead Brian Massey, and Creative Director Ra Vincent set about to create two fully-habitable Hobbit holes on Bagshot Row.

Today, when visitors enter the homes, they see the same snug, earth-sheltered, natural abodes with the curving architecture, soft oil lamps, and hand-crafted furniture that Director Peter Jackson envisioned for the films. Guests wander first through bedrooms, a parlor, and a bathroom, and then continue their tour in the second half of the home, taking in a kitchen, dining room, study, and pantries stocked to reflect the trades of the two families, the Twofoots and the Proudfoots, one in wicker baskets and the other in wine and cheese.

While oil lamps flicker warmly, most of the lighting in the underground, concrete bunkers remains unobtrusive, allowing visitors to forget that they are in an attraction. It is the subtlety of the illumination and the apparent absence of light sources and technology that make the design stand out.

Into the Hobbit Hole

“Every light had to be built-in, disguised as lanterns, or made invisible,” noted Simpson. The team began by adding 24-V, 2700K COB LED light strips to a decorative rail that sat at shoulder-height, the lower lights washing downward and the uppers gently illuminating the domed roof. LED light strips were also integrated into each piece of furniture, from shelves to drawers and tables. For high shelves, recessed lights were placed at their bases, thus shining upward, while busier shelves possess luminaires at the front edge that shine both up and down. Each piece of joinery was given legs so that there would be room for under-lighting beneath tables and cabinetry.

As the project moved along, Simpson and the team worked collaboratively with the furniture and props designers, marking up all drawings and designs, indicating where lights would go and spending many hours in the various workshops resolving how the cables could be routed, exiting into the wall before connecting into the roof.

“The illuminated Hobbit holes on Bagshot Row demonstrate how design, craft and technology can converge to create immersive environments.”

This illumination created a warm and cozy aesthetic, but it didn’t provide enough light. “It was beautiful but there was no direction. It wasn’t punchy enough,” admitted Simpson. This concern tied into early discussions about creating “Instagram moments”—photo spots where groups of visitors could gather, perhaps pose at the head of a table, and quickly capture memorable images. To meet this need, Simpson introduced subtle ceiling illumination within the molded, fire-safe, plaster-like ceiling beams, hiding Lightstudio’s K1X30 periscope downlights in knots and splits within the timber. Alongside these were deeply recessed, adjustable, Bevel Flute mini 3-W downlights from LightKit. These were fitted between the beams in the crafted plaster ceilings, carefully themed and hidden so that when guests entered a room or took a photo, the light sources were never visible.

Lanterns, sconces, and chandeliers constituted an additional layer of illumination. These fixtures needed to appear like Tolkien’s oil lamps, but commercially available flame bulbs, often designed for the distant stage, were not convincing at close range. Instead, Toulouse iterated multiple prototypes, building miniature flame-effect LED screens to replace the lamps until the glow was natural to those in the immediate vicinity. The Toulouse workshop team—Nora Thunders, Matthias Goeb, Oscar Pierson, and Jed Drake-Brockman—also developed a bespoke light source by fitting more than 120 sources into the hand-built lanterns, wall sconces, and chandeliers created by the Hobbiton Art Department themed to pass as Hobbit craftwork.

The glasswork was created by a scientific glassblower who, starting with Pyrex tubing designed for lab equipment, blew, twisted, and frosted the glass to create authentic lantern shades. These were painted and aged by the art department. Meanwhile, the Toulouse team engineered custom LED flame boards by adapting and modifying designs found online. These boards play looping flame animations and, when installed back-to-back in fixtures, give the appearance of a natural flicker. Each chandelier head can play a slightly different animation, producing an effect that makes the flames look convincingly real. The LED flames provide control over brightness, color, and flicker speed, allowing, for example, a bright daytime scene to transition into a dimmed evening setting.

The immersive effect extends beyond the interior lighting. Weather-responsive window projections powered by Epson UST EB-805F ultra-short-throw projectors allow visitors to look “outside” and see the same clouds or sunshine they just experienced outdoors.

“Environmental audio is layered subtly through Crown CDI4300 amplification and JBL Control 23 speakers.”

There and Back Again

Behind the scenes, the scale of the installation was considerable, including over 750 channels of dimming across roughly 800 fixtures, most addressed individually. “Every light or every piece of furniture is a different channel, so they could all be balanced,” said Simpson. Achieving that balance resulted in long hours of fine-tuning, adjusting levels so that one light didn’t change the effect of another.

To preserve the warmth of Tolkien’s world, vaporproof jelly jars are set at 2700K for a lantern-like glow. Only the LEDs by the windows are slightly warmer, set to 3000K to avoid a “muddy” effect. Power is supplied through a backbone of Meanwell supplies and eldoLED DMX drivers (LIN180D linear drive DC 180 watts and PW50SA powerdrive), with hundreds of drivers tucked discretely onto the roof. Each is a reliable, multichannel unit designed to run flawlessly through Hobbiton’s 12-hour days, seven days a week.

At the heart of the system is a Pharos Designer control system, programmed with custom Toulouse scripts and synchronized through BrightSign media players so that light, sound, and projection work seamlessly together.

Environmental audio is layered subtly through Crown CDI4300 amplification and JBL Control 23 and Sonance speakers.

In November 2023, eight and a half months after the start of the project, the doors of the two Hobbit holes swung open to their first tourists. The illuminated Hobbit holes on Bagshot Row demonstrate how design, craft and technology can converge to create immersive environments. In these comfy, underground homes, the lighting design disappears into the narrative, guiding visitors, highlighting details, and shaping the mood, lending credence to Bilbo Baggins’ expression: “Bother burgling and everything to do with it! I wish I was at home in my nice hole by the fire, with the kettle just beginning to sing!”

Visitors to this year’s EUHA Congress in Nuremberg had the chance to experience Auracast in action, as the Bluetooth LE Audio technology presented in collaboration with Bettear took centre stage across the three-day event.

Held from 22–24 October, the annual gathering brought together more than 9,000 audiologists, hearing aid specialists and AV professionals from around the world. Across 15,500 m² of exhibition space over 150 companies showcased their latest innovations, while seminars and tutorials explored the future of hearing technology with Auracast proving to be one of the most talked-about topics.

For the first time, the EUHA integrated Auracast into the event itself. In collaboration with Humantechnik, AUDIOropa and Bettear, the system was deployed throughout the congress, allowing attendees to tune into live sessions in either German or English directly through compatible devices. The setup eliminated the need for traditional Telecoil areas and gave users full freedom to choose where they sat.

The technology also powered real-time translations in the exhibition’s “Live Area,” where EUHA President Beate Gromke opened the event. Her keynote, delivered in German and the translation simultaneously streamed in English via Bettear’s Auracast solution, highlighted the accessibility and flexibility of the new audio format.

Bettear B-RTX Auracast Transceivers provide an inclusive audio experience for all, with secure versatility as a personal receiver, tour guide transmitter or media player.
Bettear B Caster provide multiple Auracast streams seamlessly

“Based on Bluetooth LE Audio, Auracast allows one transmitter to broadcast to countless receivers, much like a radio station,” Gromke noted. “It’s an innovation that not only enhances events like this but also expands social participation for people with hearing loss.”

Following widespread interest and positive feedback, EUHA described Auracast as “the talk of the town,” citing its low latency, individual sound control and potential to transform audio accessibility in public spaces such as airports, cinemas and transport hubs.

With its seamless integration and impressive performance, made possible through Bettear’s collaborative work, Auracast made a strong case for being the next big step in connected audio, leaving many visitors eager to bring the technology into their own environments.

“Auracast is an innovation that not only enhances events like this but also expands social participation for people with hearing loss.”

Our Experience of Auracast at EUHA… So Far

By Phil Creighton

By lunchtime on day one, we’d already experienced Auracast in three different settings; the opening ceremony, press tour and a lecture hall. It’s safe to say the technology impressed us from the outset. All of this was made possible through Bettear’s Auracast system, which was deployed across key areas of the congress.

During the opening event, some of the translators, themselves deaf, listened to the German address via Bettear’s Auracast stream sent directly to their hearing devices. They then relayed the translation through a Bettear B-RTX transmitter, which we received on our ReSound Vivia hearing aids. This setup was remarkable for two reasons: first, Bettear successfully configured two separate Auracast streams — one in German and one in English, without any cross-interference; and second, the translators’ skill in listening to one language via Auracast and instantly voicing another live was extraordinary.

“What stood out most was Auracast’s versatility, delivering clear audio in noisy spaces where traditional tours failed, transforming accessibility for those with hearing loss.”

Audio clarity was consistently strong, even against the bustle of the congress. In the Live Area, background chatter was present but the speech remained intelligible. On the exhibition tour, the sound was cleaner, and we could follow the English translation with ease. The lecture hall, with its soundproof booths and podium microphones, delivered the best overall quality — crisp, full, and remarkably natural.

What stood out most was Auracast’s versatility. It handled large, noisy spaces with thousands of people effortlessly, delivering a clear stream directly to our hearing aids – something traditional tours simply can’t achieve for those with hearing loss. When we switched Auracast off, the difference was stark: despite standing just a few feet from the speaker, ambient noise made the talk unintelligible.

The entire system, powered by Bettear’s pebble-sized B-RTX transmitter, proved both portable and user-friendly. Connecting was as simple as scanning a QR code – quick, intuitive and ready to go within seconds.

Bettear’s real-world demonstration at EUHA showed exactly what Auracast can achieve in busy, real-world settings. It didn’t just showcase the future of hearing technology, it let us experience it firsthand.

JPRO is excited to announce it has secured the distribution rights for Bettear Wi-Fi and Auracast™ Assistive Listening Solutions in New Zealand

Auckland, New Zealand: JPRO, a leading distributor of professional audio, video and control technology solutions, is excited to announce its appointment as the New Zealand distributor for Bettear Wi-Fi and Auracast™ Assistive Listening Solutions.

Bettear create innovative wireless assistive listening systems by using the latest advancements in Wi-Fi and Auracast™ technologies. These systems aim to transform how people with hearing difficulties experience audio in both indoor and outdoor spaces such as conference rooms, concerts, museums and houses of worship. This is achieved by offering immediate and convenient access to high-quality assistive technology through personal devices including smartphones, hearing aids and other audio technologies like receivers provided at venues.

Bettear technologies include a leading Wi-Fi streaming assistive listening platform that allows users to connect their devices wirelessly to venue audio systems. With Hi-Fi over Wi-Fi, flexible indoor and outdoor installation options, built-in transcription and other unique features, the product offers a personalised listening experience using the Bettear app on smartphones.

A feature-rich Auracast™ Streamer represents another leap forward in assistive listening technology, providing high-quality, low latency audio directly to compatible hearing aids and listening devices. Wide coverage and hybrid capabilities with the ability to broadcast Auracast™ and Wi-Fi simultaneously, set the streamer apart from other Auracast™ solutions.

Auracast™ is based on new Bluetooth technology that broadcasts high quality sound using very little power consumption. It essentially allows an audio source, such as a microphone or sound mixer, to transmit one or more audio streams to an unlimited number of compatible audio receivers like earbuds, cochlear implants or hearing aids. Users can then select (via an app) which audio stream they want their listening device to connect to.

These advanced technologies promise to transform audio experiences for the hearing-impaired in public spaces such as theatres, conference rooms and places of worship, offering unmatched clarity and inclusivity.

JBL SRX900 Best Audio
INTELLIGIBILITY AND DEFINITION COME FIRST

Taking inspiration from JBL’s flagship VTX line, the SRX900 Series’ custom-designed and manufactured transducers, coupled with JBL’s innovative horn and waveguide designs, deliver superior performance and output usually only available in more expensive three-way systems.

SRX900 woofers are based on JBL’s proprietary Differential Drive dual-voicecoil, dual-gap arrangement design, which delivers better heat dissipation, lower power compression and wider dynamic range than conventional single-coil designs. Transducers feature neodymium magnet structures, and heat sinks are integrated into driver frames. It all adds up to extended frequency response, high power capacity and low distortion in an incredibly lightweight driver assembly.

The SRX900’s 2432H-3 compression driver features a neodymium magnet structure, 3-inch titanium diaphragm and a 1.5-inch exit, for crisp transients, superior dynamic range and extended sensitivity beyond 10 kHz, for truly linear high-frequency response at any output level.

JBL SRX900 Series line arrays are based on JBL's groundbreaking Radiation Boundary Integrator
CONSISTENT COVERAGE

SRX900 Series line arrays are based on JBL’s groundbreaking Radiation Boundary Integrator design, first introduced in the flagship VTX Series. The patented RBI device mounts both the high and low-frequency transducers on a single horn, improving horizontal dispersion while minimizing cabinet size. A precision waveguide provides perfect cabinet-to-cabinet summation for seamless front-to-back coverage, and a large horn extends low-frequency control and reduces unwanted energy behind the array.

SRX900 Versatile Scalable Affordable
VERSATILE, SCALABLE AND AFFORDABLE

The SRX900 Series offers a complete system solution, including speakers, subwoofers and accessories that support a variety of configurations and simplify storage, transport and rigging. Because systems are scalable, it’s easy to start with a small investment and add components over time. SRX900 products are designed to work seamlessly with other JBL touring sound products, thanks to common voicing targets and phase characteristics.

SRX900 Powered Line Array with Powerful DSP
SOPHISTICATED DSP

SRX900 models feature a DSP package that provides everything users need to optimize and tune their systems, including 24-band parametric EQ, 2,000 ms of delay and gain control. JBL’s proprietary Array Size Compensation (ASC) filter corrects for different array sizes, while the FIR-based Throw Distance Compensation (TDC) filter compensates air-imposed sound loss, for more uniform sound distribution without having to spend hours measuring and tuning the system. An internal noise generator can be used to test the system without the need for a console.

JBL SRX900 Crown iTech LevelMax Limiters
LEVELMAX LIMITERS PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT

The SRX900 Series’ advanced LevelMax limiter suite, codeveloped by JBL and Crown engineers for Crown’s I-Tech HD professional touring amplifiers, uses sophisticated excursion-control algorithms to protect transducers from mechanical damage. RMS limiting and long-term thermal protection keep transducer temperatures under control, ensuring reliable operation under any conditions.

JBL SRX900 Australasia's First Choice for Affordable Scalable Powered Line Array Systems
FUTURE-PROOF NETWORKING

The SRX900 Series supports HARMAN’s new HControl ethernet protocol, which brings advances in stability, reduces network traffic load and removes the need for complex IP addresses. Users can simply set a numerical value to each device for easy identification. Two switched network ports offer simplified networking for daisy-chaining. SRX900 products are equipped with Ethernet ports to facilitate monitoring and configuring the system over the network. Because SRX products use standard Ethernet protocols, customers can take advantage of inexpensive networking products such as Ethernet switches and wi-fi access points.

SEAMLESS SOFTWARE CONTROL

The SRX900 Series’ unified software suite lets users manage system design, control and deployment functions on Windows, macOS, and iOS. Use JBL LAC-3 simulation software for system design and the new, cross-platform JBL Performance application for system management; transfer rigging information via the Array Link iOS/Android companion app. A rear-panel LCD screen provides full on-speaker access to control features, making it easy for users to troubleshoot large systems or configure small systems right onscreen.

Because SRX900 Series line arrays and subwoofers are self-powered, users never have to worry about matching components or lugging amp racks
THE POWER OF POWERED SYSTEMS

Because SRX900 Series line arrays and subwoofers are self-powered, users never have to worry about matching components or lugging amp racks. Custom Class D amplifiers are designed from the ground up for optimal performance alongside matched SRX900 transducers; amps are passively cooled, with no open holes that could allow water or dust to enter the electronics. A universal switching mode power supply works on any voltage between 100 and 250V, and a low power mode kicks in when no audio is detected, saving energy. Up to eight SRX906 speakers and four SRX910 speakers can be connected to the same power circuit (depending on region), minimizing cable complexities and cutting costs.

FAST, SAFE, EASY RIGGING with JBL SRX900 Powered flexible Line Array
FAST, SAFE, EASY RIGGING

SRX900 Series systems are designed for both portable and installed applications and can be deployed in a variety of configurations, from pole-mounted to ground-stacked to flown arrays of up to 16 cabinets. A three-point rigging system, adapted from VTX technologies, makes suspending systems safe and easy, regardless of system size or user experience level. Set splay angles on the ground; cabinets lock into place as the system is lifted. The rear rigging spine serves as an additional heatsink for added cooling. Available accessories include array frames, base plates, pole-mount and truss-clamp adapters, cases, carts and covers.

Purpose Built JBL Pro SRX900
PRO BUILD QUALITY, INSIDE AND OUT

SRX900 Series line array loudspeakers are housed in reinforced composite enclosures while subwoofers feature 18mm plywood enclosures. FEA-optimised cabinets offer excellent size-to-weight ratio and are acoustically optimized for superior performance: Four large, double-flared low-frequency ports allow airflow even when driving the system to the limit, for natural, effortless bass response; flares control air velocity at the ports’ exit, eliminating interference noise at the grille. CAD-optimized stiffeners minimize flex. Speakers are designed for a clean, modern look, with enclosed side panels and integrated handles. Like every JBL speaker, SRX900 Series models undergo 100 hours of rigorous stress testing to ensure they will perform flawlessly and reliably in real-world conditions.

The Trilogy Tour recently selected a complete JBL VTX A Series arena sound reinforcement solution provided by Sound Image / Clair Global to power headline performances by Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull in arenas across North America.

In 2023, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull teamed up for the North American Trilogy Tour, with three distinct headline performances each evening. The 2023 leg of the tour kicked off on October 14 in D.C. and included stops in New York, Miami, Houston, Las Vegas and more and wrapped up December 16 in Vancouver.

The 2024 leg kicked off on January 30 in Fresno and included stops in Denver, Austin, Toronto, Nashville, Atlanta and more before wrapping up on March 10 in Tampa.

In order to deliver arena-ready mixes with balanced coverage, detailed clarity and maximum impact, Enrique Iglesias’s FOH mix engineer Brad Divens collaborated with Pitbull’s FOH mix engineer Will Madera and Ricky Martin’s FOH mix engineer Jorge Frontera to specify a complete JBL VTX tour sound reinforcement system.

“I was introduced to VTX on a previous tour with Brad and Enrique Iglesias, and for the last six or seven years VTX has been on our rider,” said Madera. “The first time I listened to it I fell in love with it. It translates my mix very well. I love the low end and the definition of the mids and highs. It has that pop rock sound that I like very much. It was a unanimous decision to go with JBL VTX on this tour, and it was definitely the right choice.”

“It’s right in your face but not aggressive. There’s no downside to the VTX system.”

“The coverage and impact from that system is incredible,” said Divens. “I like the punch, the clarity, I especially like the top end, it’s so smooth and airy and very present. The vocal quality is great coming out of it. Everything seems to sit right where you expect it to be. It’s right in your face but not aggressive. There’s no downside to the VTX system. It goes up quickly, it’s efficient and powerful. The system is at 100% and it can do anything. I’ve mixed on every single possible rig. JBL VTX is the rig I choose. I’d put it up against any other rig.”

Both Madera and Divens praised the quality of work by Bill Chase, the tour’s systems engineer, and expressed that they had total faith in the JBL VTX sound system’s ability to translate their mixes consistently night in night out in different arenas on tour.

“The system is at 100% and it can do anything. I’ve mixed on every single possible rig. JBL VTX is the rig I choose.”

“Bill Chase is our system tech, and he’s really good at making it sound the exact same every day in every different room, which is the hardest thing to do,” said Madera. “The JBL system performed consistently on this tour, which makes our jobs easier. It’s been one of my best experiences touring yet, no complaints whatsoever. It’s great to be able to hang out with incredible engineers like Jorgito and Brad. I look up to their mixes, they’re incredible at what they do. It was a great learning experience.”

“This crew we have is exceptional,” said Divens. “That’s really made it painless when it comes to the audio portion. To have consistency night after night from the audio department is the biggest thing I can ask for as a mixer. There’s not one night on this tour when I felt that something wasn’t right – it’s been perfect. Every arena is different, but you put 15,000 screaming fans in there, and it all comes together. The shows have been going great, and that’s partly because of what the PA delivers, and the crew that sets it up.”

System Features

The Trilogy Tour’s JBL VTX sound system features a total of 96 VTX A12 with a main hang of 20 boxes per side and side hangs of 16 boxes per side, and auxiliary hangs of 14 speakers. To deliver a strong and controlled bass presence, the team specified 42 VTX B28 subwoofers, with 24 subs flown with the main array, and 16 subs on the ground in front of the stage. The crew also included 12 VTX A8 speakers stacked on top of the ground subs to deliver front fill coverage.

“The JBL system performed consistently on this tour, which makes our jobs easier. It’s been one of my best experiences touring yet, no complaints whatsoever.”

The use of wireless technology in many industries has grown rapidly while the number of radio frequencies available for wireless microphone use has become less and the space more congested. Despite these challenges, event production can sound its best by implementing best practice with wireless microphone systems and lowering the RF noise floor.

Wireless receivers typically search for the strongest matching signal, irrespective of its quality, which means that the RF signal environment should be as clean as possible. This environment is referred to as the signal noise floor, which is the amount of background RF (Radio Frequency) noise present before any required signals are received.

Well-attenuated facility with a low noise floor and no LED wall interference
Noise Floor with LED Wall switched on and visible 'spurs'

The noise floor is caused by RF interference (RFI) that is generated from most electronic products or wireless equipment nearby. LED, LCD and other types of video walls used in productions as well as LED lights cause a significant amount of low-level noise across the RF spectrum, which can be a silent problem for wireless audio systems, as they reduce the signal range further.

This is because in the production environment, video walls and lights are often near to performers and crew members that are using wireless microphones, in ear monitors (IEM) and comms systems. In many instances, video walls not only produce broadband low level noise, but have been seen to produce narrow band RF ‘spurs’ of an elevated level (amplitude) that can cause audible RF interference.

If the noise floor is too high, it can have a negative effect on the receiver by over-saturating the front end. This results in a loss of input sensitivity, reducing the range of the system significantly, creating unreliable performance and overloading of the receiver.

Therefore, the chosen RF signal (frequency) for a wireless audio system should be the strongest signal – much higher than the noise floor – to achieve clean audio reception. This signal is known as the signal-to-noise ratio which is the ratio of the difference between the noise floor and the required RF signal.

USING BANDPASS FILTERS

While the implementation of best wireless audio practice such as frequency coordination with effective antenna distribution and antenna placement is always encouraged, there are RF tools available that can lower the noise floor in the RF spectrum and prevent the RF receiver overloading.

Lowering the noise floor is achieved by using a bandpass filter to reduce and filter out unwanted frequencies on each side of the desired frequency range. It is simply inserted in the antenna signal path and allows a specific range of frequencies to pass, while restricting the frequencies on either side outside that range. If a diversity system is used, a bandpass filter should be inserted on each antenna line.

Upgrading to RF Venue bandpass filters is the easiest and most cost effective way to improve the reliability of a wireless mic system. The bandpass filters are available in a range of frequency bands, allowing a 50MHz bandpass with up to 40dB of side rejection. Users select a band based on the frequency block the wireless system is operated in.

The illustration captured at InfoComm shows how effective a bandpass filter can be. A pair of RF Venue 560-608 MHz bandpass filters were inserted between the antenna and the input to a Distro4 (one on each diversity antenna) significantly reducing the load of unwanted signals to the receiver. It allowed the desired band (560-608MHz) to pass untouched thereby improving the stability of the system.

RF Venue Band Pass filters help lower the noise floor for wireless microphones and IEM in ear monitors

REDUCING INTERMODULATION WITH BANDPASS FILTERS

Using bandpass filters can effectively reduce intermodulation problems when using several IEMs and wireless microphone systems together.

RF Venue Bandpass filters help prevent intermodulation between wireless microphones and In Ear Monitors IEM in a production setup

As an example, a production has set up the IEMs in the low 500MHz range, with the wireless mics configured above 560MHz.

A 560-608MHz bandpass filter is inserted on the microphone side, between the diversity antenna (DFIN) and the input to the RF distro (Distro4), the objective to always protect the wireless mic receivers from unwanted signals.

In this instance, the wireless mics are being protected from interference (intermodulation) by the IEMs. The filter also blocks RF above 608MHz.

RF Venue bandpass filters have been designed to work with any brand of wireless system, provided that the correct frequency band is selected.

If you need assistance in configuring your wireless microphone setup and would like to implement best practice measures using correct antenna distribution, please contact our team of experts at JPRO today!

If you have a question about using bandpass filters in your system, or need assistance with your wireless microphone setup, contact our specialist Team at JPRO today!
