The Trilogy Tour recently selected a complete JBL VTX A Series arena sound reinforcement solution provided by Sound Image / Clair Global to power headline performances by Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull in arenas across North America.

In 2023, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull teamed up for the North American Trilogy Tour, with three distinct headline performances each evening. The 2023 leg of the tour kicked off on October 14 in D.C. and included stops in New York, Miami, Houston, Las Vegas and more and wrapped up December 16 in Vancouver.

The 2024 leg kicked off on January 30 in Fresno and included stops in Denver, Austin, Toronto, Nashville, Atlanta and more before wrapping up on March 10 in Tampa.

In order to deliver arena-ready mixes with balanced coverage, detailed clarity and maximum impact, Enrique Iglesias’s FOH mix engineer Brad Divens collaborated with Pitbull’s FOH mix engineer Will Madera and Ricky Martin’s FOH mix engineer Jorge Frontera to specify a complete JBL VTX tour sound reinforcement system.

“I was introduced to VTX on a previous tour with Brad and Enrique Iglesias, and for the last six or seven years VTX has been on our rider,” said Madera. “The first time I listened to it I fell in love with it. It translates my mix very well. I love the low end and the definition of the mids and highs. It has that pop rock sound that I like very much. It was a unanimous decision to go with JBL VTX on this tour, and it was definitely the right choice.”

“It’s right in your face but not aggressive. There’s no downside to the VTX system.”

“The coverage and impact from that system is incredible,” said Divens. “I like the punch, the clarity, I especially like the top end, it’s so smooth and airy and very present. The vocal quality is great coming out of it. Everything seems to sit right where you expect it to be. It’s right in your face but not aggressive. There’s no downside to the VTX system. It goes up quickly, it’s efficient and powerful. The system is at 100% and it can do anything. I’ve mixed on every single possible rig. JBL VTX is the rig I choose. I’d put it up against any other rig.”

Both Madera and Divens praised the quality of work by Bill Chase, the tour’s systems engineer, and expressed that they had total faith in the JBL VTX sound system’s ability to translate their mixes consistently night in night out in different arenas on tour.

“The system is at 100% and it can do anything. I’ve mixed on every single possible rig. JBL VTX is the rig I choose.”

“Bill Chase is our system tech, and he’s really good at making it sound the exact same every day in every different room, which is the hardest thing to do,” said Madera. “The JBL system performed consistently on this tour, which makes our jobs easier. It’s been one of my best experiences touring yet, no complaints whatsoever. It’s great to be able to hang out with incredible engineers like Jorgito and Brad. I look up to their mixes, they’re incredible at what they do. It was a great learning experience.”

“This crew we have is exceptional,” said Divens. “That’s really made it painless when it comes to the audio portion. To have consistency night after night from the audio department is the biggest thing I can ask for as a mixer. There’s not one night on this tour when I felt that something wasn’t right – it’s been perfect. Every arena is different, but you put 15,000 screaming fans in there, and it all comes together. The shows have been going great, and that’s partly because of what the PA delivers, and the crew that sets it up.”

“The system is at 100% and it can do anything. I’ve mixed on every single possible rig. JBL VTX is the rig I choose.”

System Features

The Trilogy Tour’s JBL VTX sound system features a total of 96 VTX A12 with a main hang of 20 boxes per side and side hangs of 16 boxes per side, and auxiliary hangs of 14 speakers. To deliver a strong and controlled bass presence, the team specified 42 VTX B28 subwoofers, with 24 subs flown with the main array, and 16 subs on the ground in front of the stage. The crew also included 12 VTX A8 speakers stacked on top of the ground subs to deliver front fill coverage.

“The JBL system performed consistently on this tour, which makes our jobs easier. It’s been one of my best experiences touring yet, no complaints whatsoever.”

The use of wireless technology in many industries has grown rapidly while the number of radio frequencies available for wireless microphone use has become less and the space more congested. Despite these challenges, event production can sound its best by implementing best practice with wireless microphone systems and lowering the RF noise floor.

Wireless receivers typically search for the strongest matching signal, irrespective of its quality, which means that the RF signal environment should be as clean as possible. This environment is referred to as the signal noise floor, which is the amount of background RF (Radio Frequency) noise present before any required signals are received.

Well-attenuated facility with a low noise floor and no LED wall interference
Noise Floor with LED Wall switched on and visible 'spurs'

The noise floor is caused by RF interference (RFI) that is generated from most electronic products or wireless equipment nearby. LED, LCD and other types of video walls used in productions as well as LED lights cause a significant amount of low-level noise across the RF spectrum, which can be a silent problem for wireless audio systems, as they reduce the signal range further.

This is because in the production environment, video walls and lights are often near to performers and crew members that are using wireless microphones, in ear monitors (IEM) and comms systems. In many instances, video walls not only produce broadband low level noise, but have been seen to produce narrow band RF ‘spurs’ of an elevated level (amplitude) that can cause audible RF interference.

If the noise floor is too high, it can have a negative effect on the receiver by over-saturating the front end. This results in a loss of input sensitivity, reducing the range of the system significantly, creating unreliable performance and overloading of the receiver.

Therefore, the chosen RF signal (frequency) for a wireless audio system should be the strongest signal – much higher than the noise floor – to achieve clean audio reception. This signal is known as the signal-to-noise ratio which is the ratio of the difference between the noise floor and the required RF signal.

USING BANDPASS FILTERS

While the implementation of best wireless audio practice such as frequency coordination with effective antenna distribution and antenna placement is always encouraged, there are RF tools available that can lower the noise floor in the RF spectrum and prevent the RF receiver overloading.

Lowering the noise floor is achieved by using a bandpass filter to reduce and filter out unwanted frequencies on each side of the desired frequency range. It is simply inserted in the antenna signal path and allows a specific range of frequencies to pass, while restricting the frequencies on either side outside that range. If a diversity system is used, a bandpass filter should be inserted on each antenna line.

Upgrading to RF Venue bandpass filters is the easiest and most cost effective way to improve the reliability of a wireless mic system. The bandpass filters are available in a range of frequency bands, allowing a 50MHz bandpass with up to 40dB of side rejection. Users select a band based on the frequency block the wireless system is operated in.

The illustration captured at InfoComm shows how effective a bandpass filter can be. A pair of RF Venue 560-608 MHz bandpass filters were inserted between the antenna and the input to a Distro4 (one on each diversity antenna) significantly reducing the load of unwanted signals to the receiver. It allowed the desired band (560-608MHz) to pass untouched thereby improving the stability of the system.

REDUCING INTERMODULATION WITH BANDPASS FILTERS

Using bandpass filters can effectively reduce intermodulation problems when using several IEMs and wireless microphone systems together.

RF Venue Bandpass filters help prevent intermodulation between wireless microphones and In Ear Monitors IEM in a production setup

As an example, a production has set up the IEMs in the low 500MHz range, with the wireless mics configured above 560MHz.

A 560-608MHz bandpass filter is inserted on the microphone side, between the diversity antenna (DFIN) and the input to the RF distro (Distro4), the objective to always protect the wireless mic receivers from unwanted signals.

In this instance, the wireless mics are being protected from interference (intermodulation) by the IEMs. The filter also blocks RF above 608MHz.

RF Venue bandpass filters have been designed to work with any brand of wireless system, provided that the correct frequency band is selected.

Crammed full of tech in an intelligently designed form-factor with enough amplifier power to easily transmit voice or music to a good-sized crowd. This is the all-in-one Pro Bluetooth Speaker to take and #PlayAnywhere

Portable Battery Power

EON ONE Compact is highly portable for indoor and outdoor use thanks to its swappable, rechargeable battery, capable of 12 hours of play time at full volume. Fast recharge time takes only 2 and 1/2 hours or it can be used while connected to mains power. Top tip is to purchase an external charger and spare battery for battery swaps when out in the field.

Connectivity

The onboard Soundcraft designed 4-channel digital mixer has easy to use controls, with  2 Mic/Line inputs and Hi-Z line inputs, mini-jack, Bluetooth 5.0 streaming and audio pass-through for linking of additional speakers or could be used as a monitor send. JBL Pro have developed a range of useful accessories including the EON ONE Compact USB Power Cable that utilises the USB charging port to power guitar pedals or AKG wireless receivers for true mobile, battery-powered performances. An optional external charger and swappable spare batteries are available for battery swaps on-the-go for non-stop performance. EON ONE Compact can be protected during transport with a variety of speaker cover options from a stylish tote bag, a standard padded slip cover, to a water resistant padded backpack.

JBL EON ONE MK2

Battery Powered Portable Sound System NZ

EON ONE MK2 is the newest All-In-One Portable Battery Powered column array by JBL Professional. Launched in New Zealand in September 2021, this portable system has become a firm favourite, featuring the best of the previous EON ONE models and adding the latest in digital mixing, improved portability, longer battery power and audio processing technology. This makes EON ONE MK2 the most flexible, powerful and portable option in its class of powered column array to date.

Line Array Technology

Leveraging line-array technology developed for high-end, festival-level PA systems means the audience can hear a clear and focussed sound. Column array speakers carry sound farther and clearer than conventional point source or horn speakers, without the sound having to be too loud or annoying in the front. This makes the EON ONE MK2 a clear winner when the sound needs to be carried further.

Portable Battery Power

EON ONE MK2 is highly portable with a swappable, rechargeable battery that is cleverly built into the speaker column. Providing 6 hours of play time at full volume and weighing in at only 19kg for the complete system – its battery operation alone provides many advantages to anyone needing sound outdoors including school sports days, buskers and wedding celebrants. The convenience of not needing to find an electrical power outlet is extremely beneficial for rental companies, activations and any corporate AV application, saving heaps of time during setup and pack down.

When running on mains power, JBL engineers have cleverly configured the MK2 to provide an additional 4dB of sound power, increasing the output from 119dB to 123dB, which is more than adequate for most small gigs.

EONONE-MK2 powerful digital mixer

Connectivity

The onboard Soundcraft designed 5-channel digital mixer has 3 Mic/Line inputs (2 with optional 48v phantom power), Bluetooth 5.0 streaming, audio pass-through with volume control and speaker delay (for linking additional speakers). USB power for charging devices and powering wireless mic receivers. The mixing capabilities are enhanced with a full colour LCD screen for easy navigation and operation.

Operating the Soundcraft designed digital mixer via the onboard controls is easy and intuitive, with the inclusion of dedicated EQ controls, which you don’t often find on this kind of unit. There are three levels of access to the dbx DriveRack DSP, including beginner, intermediate or advanced, which means the MK2 can go out safely with just about anyone in dry hire, or be tweaked and tuned by a pro as necessary.

As with the EON ONE Compact, the MK2 digital mixer becomes even more powerful when using the JBL Pro Connect universal app that provides control over every function of up to ten systems.

Accessories

To complement the portability of the EON ONE MK2, JBL Pro have developed a range of useful accessories including the EON ONE USB Power Cable to power guitar pedals or AKG wireless receivers. Optional external charger and spare batteries are being developed for battery swaps in the field. EON ONE MK2 is protected during transport with a mobile transporter cover on wheels that has extra storage for cables and microphones.

Since AKG was founded 75 years ago, they’ve developed thousands of audio products for both professionals and consumers—from loudspeakers to headphones to phonograph cartridges to car horns, intercoms, telephone handset capsules, and “cushion speakers.” (Yes, speakers that went inside pillows were a thing, back in the day.) But they’re most famous for their microphones.

AKG mics have captured some of music’s most iconic voices, from Frank Sinatra to David Bowie to Kanye West. Legendary producers George Martin and Quincy Jones have raved about their AKG mics. AKG mics were used onstage at The Beatles’ watershed 1965 Shea Stadium concert, and AKG technologies went into orbit onboard the MIR space station. In 2010, AKG received a Grammy Award for “contributions to the art and science of music recording and performance through innovation and excellence in product design.”

AKG has produced hundreds of microphones over the decades, including dynamic mics, condenser microphones, USB mics and wireless microphones. But their C Series mics truly changed the studio game.  Today, AKG are proud to offer the AKG C414 XLS and C414 XLII, which carry the C Series legacy forward in our most versatile models yet.

“We’ve experimented with others but always come back to the 414. You can move around a lot while using it, and I find that with my vocal range I can get a lot of sounds out of it. Sometimes my voice sounds muddy in the studio, and the only thing that can clear it up is the 414.” Billy Idol

C414 XLS and C414XLII: Modern Classics

These multipattern condenser mics are true studio multitaskers, offering a range of polar patterns, highpass filters and pads that let you capture any sound source from the softest strings to monster amp cabs in brilliant clarity. The difference is in their capsules:

The C414 XLII Reference Multipattern Condenser Microphone offers a slight present boost and impressive spatial reproduction, similar to our original AKG C12 microphone, delivering stunning captures of vocals and solo instruments. The C414 XLII features nine polar patterns, and offers three bass-cut filters and three attenuation levels for capturing anything from close-up instruments to sources up to 158 dB SPLs. A peak hold LED displays even the shortest overload peaks. For live sound applications and permanent installations, all controls can easily be disabled for trouble-free use.

The C414 XLS Reference Multipattern Condenser Microphone maintains the sonic character of the legendary C414 B-ULS, and features the same capsule as the iconic C414 B-ULS, for a transparent response. Engineered for highest linearity and neutral sound, the C414 XLS captures beautifully detailed recordings of vocals and acoustic instruments. The C414 XLS offers a choice of nine polar patterns, with three switchable bass-cut filters and three attenuation settings, plus peak hold LED and disableable controls for live use.

C314: Iconic Sound, Modern Features

Designed for enthusiasts and professionals alike, the AKG C314 has advanced features that help artists fine-tune their signature sound including four selectable polar patterns, the lowest self-noise in its class, and an overload detection LED. Using the same one-inch dual diaphragm capsule as the C414 XLS, musicians, engineers and producers can have the confidence that their audience will experience every subtle nuance as it was intended.

C214: Iconic Sound, Streamlined

For those looking for an affordable entry into the C Series, the C214 large-diaphragm condenser microphone is a cost-conscious alternative to the C414. The C214 captures sound by combining one capsule of the legendary C414 dual-capsule system and patented AKG Back-Plate Technology, and offers a bass-cut filter and a switchable 20 dB pad that allows recording of sources of up to 156 dB SPL.

C12VR: The Modern Holy Grail

Our flagship C12 VR contemporary version of the C12 uses the original 6072A vacuum tube and dual-diaphragm design but incorporates an updated, edge-terminated CK12 capsule and state-of-the-art components for lower noise and distortion and reliable operation. And, of course, that iconic C12 sound that is guaranteed to make some studio magic.

“My first application would be for first and second violins. It’s really great mic for the classical approach for a string section. Hear it on … the first and second violins in Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’.” Bruce Swedien the famed engineer behind Michael Jackson’s Thrillertold Sound on Sound magazine that the C414 EB was among his “prized possessions”

In Concert Productions uses RF Venue’s DISTRO4 antenna distribution system, 4 ZONE active antenna combiner and Diversity Fin Antennas on multiple television program productions, providing rock solid reliability for 30-40 channels of voice wireless, 8-24 channels of IEM as well as IFB requirements.

In Concert Productions (ICP) is a production leader in the Atlanta, Georgia and Southeastern US markets. Providing solutions in live events, corporate and broadcast audio services for a wide variety of television program productions, including Family Feud, Titan Games, Judge Steve Harvey and Dancing With Myself, as well as cutting-edge televised sports like Fan Controlled Football.

Key to ICP’s arsenal of tools are reliable wireless audio essentials from RF Venue. Thanks to ICP’s use of these products, the shows have never experienced a wireless audio dropout, putting producers’ minds at ease and making filming and editing a breeze.

The popular game show Family Feud, filmed at the Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, GA, uses four RF Venue Diversity Fin Antennas, covering all four sides of the studio stage. The four antennas, picking up multiple channels of Shure Axient wireless microphones, are routed to an RF Venue DISTRO4 Antenna Distribution System.

“Rock-solid and cost-effective,” says Jay Rabbitt, ICP President. “These are two things that daytime television production demands, and RF Venue always delivers.”

ICP recently wrapped 20 episodes of the 2022 season of Judge Steve Harvey, featuring the titular actor, writer and impresario. Dropout-free wireless audio is assured by the use of an RF Venue DISTRO4 Antenna Distribution System receiving signal from four RF Venue Diversity Fin antennas.

“The action can be pretty fast paced, and participants move around the set, so the wireless signals have to be consistently strong,” says Rabbitt. “RF Venue gear never misses a beat.”

On NBC’s new primetime hit Dancing With Myself, contestants occupy stacked metal boxes as they perform, a situation that can wreak havoc with multiple channels of wireless audio. Over 12 channels of mics used by the contestants and audience interviews are totally protected, thanks to the use of RF Venue 4 ZONE antenna combiners and four Diversity Fin antennas used to cover the set and the outdoor judges’ tables.

“I can have all of the wireless channels coming to me for a combined input and output for the show’s audio,” says Rabbitt. “And as a bonus, it does that at a fraction of the cost of anyone else’s equipment.”

“Rock-solid and cost-effective, these are two things that daytime television production demands, and RF Venue always delivers”

Another show testing the limits of wireless sound was BET’s 2021 Next Chance Girl Group which put aspiring vocalists together in a 14,000-square-foot house on 18 acres. On site, four 4 ZONE antenna combiners were connected to a fifth 4 ZONE unit collecting audio from throughout the house and grounds.

“The system was on 24/7, constantly covering the house and grounds,” says Rabbitt. “Never a dropout, never a missed mark.”

“RF Venue is simply bulletproof when it comes to wireless, no matter where or how we use it.”

Fan Controlled Football is the latest way Americans can assuage their addiction to football during the NFL’s off season. And if they like miked-up players, they’ve come to the right place: All 18 members of both teams are wired for sound throughout the game. Four of RF Venue’s 4 ZONE units are used to combine the wireless microphone signals collected from across the 300 X 100-foot gridiron, and they do so flawlessly, says Rabbitt.

“We also had another six channels of handheld wireless mics and broadcast lavaliers, and this was all played across the street from a group of mobile-phone cell towers and broadcast television antennas. And you guessed it: not a single dropout during the entire three-month season. RF Venue is simply bulletproof when it comes to wireless, no matter where or how we use it.”

To enhance the visitor experience at the BMW showroom in the iconic Nürburgring motorsports complex recently installed a suite of powerful HARMAN Professional audio visual solutions.

The Opportunity

BMW and HARMAN have enjoyed a close working relationship for almost 30 years. Harman Kardon speakers deliver immersive and high-fidelity audio on the road to millions of BMW sedan and SUV owners, making HARMAN’s technology as much a part of the BMW experience as the finely-tuned engines and German craftsmanship. For its 480-square meter showroom at the legendary Nürburgring Formula 1 motorsports complex, BMW wanted a versatile and easy-to-use audio-visual system with wireless control to ensure an unforgettable experience for every visitor. To meet these requirements, BMW and C-Line deployed a comprehensive selection of AMX, JBL Professional and Crown solutions.

“We wanted to deliver a perfect sound and video system, but we had to meet a really tight deadline,” said Thomas Langenegger, Project Manager, BMW M. “Complicating matters, we had to use the venue for different exhibits, each with their own audio-visual needs.”

BMW’s primary goal for the showroom’s system was to deliver audio and video content throughout the facility with ease and efficiency. AMX SVSI 2300 Series AVoIP encoders and decoders provide the needed processing power and user-friendliness, allowing staff to display signage, presentations, and race day video feeds at the touch of a button. AMX Modero touch panels allow users to control the displays on any of the nine video walls throughout the space and select live TV, Nürburgring TV or auxiliary inputs for presenters to showcase their own content. AMX Touch Panel Control apps give users the same level of control from wireless tablets and smartphones.

“Since the beginning of the project, we knew that we would install a reliable and rock-solid control system combined with SVSI networked AV from AMX,” said Christian Kraus, Account Manager, C-Line Mediensysteme. “AMX is our manufacturer of choice and we have done many successful installations over the years using their solutions.”

“We wanted to deliver a perfect sound and video system… using the venue for different exhibits, each with their own audio-visual needs.”

The Solution

To accommodate the showroom’s limited size, C-Line selected JBL AC28/26 two-way loudspeakers and ASB6115 subwoofers for wide coverage and detailed sound while taking up minimal space. Because the showroom also has the ability to be divided into three separate audio zones divided by acoustic curtains, C-Line deployed JBL AWC82 and Control 67 P/T loudspeakers to provide distinct, independent audio in each area when needed. Crown CDi 4|600 and CDi 2|300 networked amplifiers, featuring easy monitoring and extensive control options, allow staff to program and adjust extremely low-latency audio throughout the facility. Langenegger reported overwhelmingly positive responses to the showroom’s audio and video components from visitors thus far, recognizing HARMAN and C-Line for their expertise and collaboration.

“HARMAN and BMW have a long partnership because their equipment works and their products are excellent. It met, if not exceeded, our requirements.”

System Features
The Impact

“BMW is a hugely design-oriented company, so we wanted speakers that would be both sleek and unobtrusive,” added Langenegger. “The JBL speakers fit the bill, and the whole system works perfectly. HARMAN and BMW have a long partnership because their equipment works and their products are excellent. We didn’t have to think too hard about partnering with HARMAN, and in the end, we chose the best system for our needs. It met, if not exceeded, our requirements.”
