CASE STUDY: HIGH PERFORMANCE FLEXIBLE SOUND SYSTEM FOR LARGE NIGHT CLUB

Situated on the banks of the Waikato River, the City of Hamilton is known for numerous activities such as cafes, gardens, walks, entertainment - and with its many tertiary institutions - the vibrant student life.

With its ability to provide a local network of underground bands, concerts that feature the latest up and coming talent in the New Zealand music industry and legendary nightclubs, it goes without saying that Hamilton provides for the best student nightlife in the country.

The Lawrenson Group is one of New Zealand’s leading bar and restaurant organisations as well as owners of The Outback Inn, Hamilton’s biggest and most popular nightclub. The nightclub recently underwent an expansion which included a HARMAN Professional PA System installation. Part of the brief was to design a powerful yet flexible PA System that could be broken down into smaller systems if need be.

“The Lawrenson Group has been proud owners of HARMAN audio gear in a large number of our venues for many years now and naturally we were pleased to continue this relationship with our new nightclub expansion at The Outback Inn,” says Jeffrey van Kempen who is Technical Director at The Lawrenson Group.

He adds, “The majority of our nightclub venues have used JBL STX components paired with CROWN XTi 2 series amplifiers with very pleasing and reliable results, as a lot of this equipment is run approximately 20 hours a week in some very harsh environments.”

After a discussion with Eli Murray, Professional Audio Sales & Design at New Zealand HARMAN Distributor JPRO, the use of the new JBL SRX passive range was chosen, again paired with CROWN XTi 2 series amplifiers.

“The system was specified so that it can either operate as one large main PA when the venue is used as a performance venue or it can be broken down into 3 smaller nightclub systems for regular weekly use,” says Eli Murray. “Portability, budget, set up and ease of use were all top of mind during the specification process.”

The main sound system consists of 8x JBL SRX835 three-way loudspeakers, reinforced with 12x SRX828S dual 18" subwoofers for the bottom end. Additional SRX815 speakers are included as in-fills while SRX815P’s have been deployed where needed.

The loudspeakers are powered by CROWN XTi 6002 and XTi4002 amplifiers with loudspeaker management provided by dbx DriveRack VENU360. A Soundcraft Si Performer 3 digital mixing console is used for large events while Soundcraft Si Impact digital mixing consoles are used for smaller events.

Jeffrey van Kempen concludes, “At the beginning of March we hosted Peking Duk for our first large event. It was also our first real chance to run the system in its entirety and we have literally been blown away with its performance. The results have been very impressive and the HARMAN solution has kept well within budget.”
