VideoPro have recently designed and installed a high-performance audio visual system for the new Les Mills gym in Christchurch. The audio system was designed by Jpro and VideoPro to the customers brief which required a separate video and audio solution for different rooms within the gym, of which all is operable from a simple centralised control.
The rooms included two Studios, a RPM room, the Main Gym and Womens Gym, Cardio Room and a Reception area - all of which had their own particular challenges to overcome. The two main Studios needed discreet but high volume loudspeakers; whereas the RPM room required the instructor to have control from his/her bike. The Main gym, Women's gym and Cardio room had low exposed ceilings which required the audio coverage the be uniform and even. All were required to have good intelligibility and of the highest quality to meet Les Mills standards.
BSS Soundweb London BLU-120 and BLU-160 were chosen because it was able to handle all of the 64 Inputs and Outputs along with all the processing required including Varicurve equalisers and Omnidrive crossovers through to limiter protection and more. The Soundweb system also seamlessly integrated with the AMX third party controller system and the AMX remote panels as a special requirement in the RPM room.
For the two main Studio's the JBL VRX932LAP powered speakers were used. The VRX932LAP are a 12” two way, self powered speaker, using internal Crown amplifiers. These were flown from the custom truss system Lighthaus provided along with the VRX918SP Crown powered 18” subwoofers which were ground stacked. The JBL VRX constant curvature line arrays were the perfect solution for these rooms as they offer excellent power handling and clarity. Also the ability to “power shade” each speaker meant that even coverage could be achieved throughout the room and this proved to be the perfect choice for the high energy atmosphere required in these Studios.
To control the sources and levels in these two rooms BSS Soundweb BLU-8 controllers were installed, the BLU-8 controllers allow up to 8 sources to be individually mixed and/or preset levels recalled. This simplified the entire control of the system to an easy to understand user interface – thereby keeping the complexity hidden away from the user.
Wedged between the two main Studios is the high intensity RPM room. Videopro business development manager Matt Smith comments “The RPM room was a particular challenge...this solution needed to allow the instructor to control lighting, temperature, fans, music and a microphone from his bike, while taking a class. On top of this, the solution had to be sweat resistant.” To meet these requirements, Videopro specified an AMX processor with a 12-button touch panel and a detailed custom software program. The AMX system was able to integrate seamlessly with the Soundweb processors to control the music sources and microphones in this room
Down on Level one you enter the Main Gym and Woman’s gym areas. Smith says that providing even coverage throughout the Main gym, Women’s gym and Cardio room was essential. “While the overall volume needed to be kept down, the audiovisual quality needed to be high for the patrons’ enjoyment. This was achieved this by installing a distributed audio system including JBL Control Contractor loudspeakers and subwoofers with Crown CTS amplifiers.” The building was acoustically modelled using EASE to determine the best positions for the speakers and all JBL Control Contractor speakers were surface mounted in the ceiling including the subwoofers.
Further down the stairs is the mezzanine level and you enter the Main A/V Plant room for the entire venue. There was a specific requirement by Les Mills that all equipment including the amplifiers, Soundweb and the wireless microphone receivers be kept out of the individual rooms and housed in a central location. This posed a small challenge for the wireless microphone systems as the antenna’s would still need to remain in each room but feed back to the plant room up to 50 metres away.
To overcome this issue the Shure UA830 RF amplifiers were used alongside ultra low loss cable to maximise RF transmission and maintain signal strength. Paul Edlin from Jpro comments “The end result was pleasing with no RF dead spots and high RF output recorded in all the required rooms”. Also in the plant room the audio signals feeding the rooms needed to be kept clean and to allow for any differences to AC power between the plant room and the individual rooms, the Audio inputs and outputs were first brought into Whirlwind line matching transformers before reaching the BSS Soundweb system for processing, this eliminated all hums and buzzes.
The main amplifier rack consisted of Crown CTS2000 and CTS1200 amplifiers which were chosen for their quality and reliability. In addition some of the 100 volt circuits required up to 900 watts per channel which the Crown amplifiers were capable of producing. Jpro PDS12R 3 phase power distribution was used to provide power to the entire amplifier rack including the BSS Soundweb System, the Shure Wireless System and the AMX control system.
